Re: Do you know a Retailer who ships worldwide
Posted by Wazmo Nariz on Friday, 04-May-2007

When I was living full time in the UK and then Australia a few years back I had to have friends/relatives send me my D&R stash. It was a PITA because I'd have to send them the money, they'd have to order it, get it, repack it, fill out customs forms and reship it, etc., but it was the only way to get D&R. I couldn't even pay for it online at the time with my CC because my billing address was London (or Brisbane) and the shipping address was in the States--I don't know if D&R has changed that bugaboo or not. I also had to cough up customs taxes, which sucked and made things even more expensive than they already were (especially in Australia...they tax the hell out of tobacco down there).

There are some retailers in the UK who ship worldwide, but none that carry D&R.

My friends and relatives who were involved with shipping duty were mighty happy when I moved back to the States, needless to say....

Michigan taxes going up!
Posted by Kizer Sosa on Friday, 09-Feb-2007

Well, it seems like our tax and spend governor found the MYO industry on her radar. Her new budget calls for a DOUBLING of the tax on "OTP" (other tobacco products), which appears to include all MYO products as well as those cheapo cig look-alike "little cigars" that the smoke shops have been selling.

Nothing's been finalized yet, but it's a safe bet that things will cost more soon.

So my question is, does anyone know what the current tax is? I want to see how much more everything is going to cost.

Re: Michigan taxes going up!
Posted by Wazmo Nariz on Friday, 09-Feb-2007

I couldn't find any info about any new taxes on OTP, but a document search unearthed a "retailer notice" from your state Treasury (read Stick-Up) Department dated June 2004 outlining an increase from 20% to 32% on OTP.

If this socialist thief has seen fit to raise it from 32% to something higher, I'd have to ask how you let someone like this get elected.... ;-) It's almost getting too late to organise to beat this ugliness, but our enemies have been organised for years--why can't we?

"Sin taxes" and other disproportionate taxation schemes have always stuck in my craw as very un-American...in fact, anyone who supports ridiculously obscene taxation practices like this should be beaten like a cheap gong and strung up from light poles in every city where they reside so that those of us who have better sense can flog them with old electrical cords and baseball bats....

Re: Michigan taxes going up!
Posted by Kizer Sosa on Friday, 09-Feb-2007

Well said! ;)

I didn't vote for her, but a lot of people who think that the government exists to keep them in house and home did. There were plenty of folks who were (are) really disgusted with the outcome of the recent election.

That 32% strikes a note... if I now recall correctly, that is the current tax rate on OTP.

So that would mean the new tax would be 64%. Cripes...

Still cheaper than premades, of course, but the state is going to get a bigger piece of the pie.

Speaking of which, they want to slap another nickel tax on a pack of premades as well.

The whole budget proposal still has to be ratified by the house, etc., but if history serves, the tobacco tax will survive and be enacted.

Re: Michigan taxes going up!
Posted by Wazmo Nariz on Friday, 09-Feb-2007

64% is an absolute outrage. And I'd imagine, on top of that, they still get to hit you up for sales tax! Amazing the hubris these bastards have! Of course our bad for letting 'em do it. All it takes is one time to "set a precedent," as these bozos like to say. You have got to express your dissatisfaction about this, at least, to these scumbags.

I'm afraid we just haven't been vigilant enough in this country when it comes to wolves in sheep's clothing.

I used them once a couple months ago. Prices were high, but the service was superb. I am on the west coast and an order placed early on a Friday morning got to me (priority mail) on Monday, and packed perfectly. Their custom blends are expensive, and the three samples I tried were below average at best, but they did have 1 oz sample sizes. They carry Zen tubes, and since those are not available everywhere I thought I'd try them out. Still, I am not sure that the excellent service warrants prices that are that far above the norm.

I was Save-a-lot (cheap local chain grocery store) today and was surprised to see them carrying McClintock pouches and 6 oz cans (reg, lt, menthol) and also reg and light tubes. pouches were $1.10 after coupon, cans were ~ $10. Tubes were $2.75. They are also carrying Bali Shag pouches for $3.19 .
At least I now have somewhere close that I can pick up some good tobacco and a decent tube when I'm in a pinch.

In any case, thanks for the info. It is a decent discount grocery store with "some" good deals on groceries here.

I would personally avoid buying from ANY site that also sells pre-made cigarettes online.

If they turn their customer lists over to the states, as most have, you will be on that list. They may think you owe taxes.

I had thought about Bob's idea earlier but didn't comment. Their prices seem good but due to internet cig sites rapidly providing their customer list and the incompetent state/federal government agencies...I'd rather not raise a red flag. Granted you didn't buy carton smokes but I would assume the burden of proof would be on the purchaser.

trying to figure out why RYO is so much cheaper
Posted by shmuck on Tuesday, 14-Feb-2006

just came to new york and cigarettes are $6-7 per pack here. you can get them for $4.50, but you can get a pouch of top, with papers, for $2.

i know that top tobacco isn't very good, but neither that nor the nickle's worth of extra processing explains why cigarettes are so much more expensive. i figured that it's got to be some extra tax that doesn't apply to RYO tobacco, but i can't find anything to support that. can anyone help me out?

Re: trying to figure out why RYO is so much cheaper
Posted by Matt on Tuesday, 14-Feb-2006

Cigarettes are designated tax "Class A" and are taxed by the pack. Each state has different taxes. New York's is $1.50. Rhode Island's is the highest at $2.46 and South Carolina is the lowest at $0.07.
Loose tobacco is taxed by the pound under tax "Class J". First it is taxed federally at $1.0969/lb. The state taxes apply to wholesalers as a percentage of gross reciept. In Kentucky that is 7.5% of gross reciepts.
Also cities and counties can add taxes too. NYC has an additional per pack tax of $1.50! Add that to the state tax of $1.50 and the federal tax of $0.39 and you're left with $3.39 cents in taxes.

To get an idea of how absurd cigarette excise taxes are consider this quote from RJ Reynold's website..."Number of six-packs of beer that must be sold in Illinois to produce the same state excise tax and settlement revenue generated by one carton of cigarettes: 137." That's 822 beers vs. 200 hundred cigarettes. What's great about RYO (tobacco products)taxes in Illinois is that it's a 6.25% sales tax add-on. To see how other states add up, follow this link...

I've never bought from them nor heard of them. The domain has been registered for at least two years. Now what makes me a skeptic though - the website only shows in other linked advertising websites. No reference by any customers on the web or in newsgroups. Also, note how they claim a talent agent uses their products. I would imagine so...if you search on their telephone number, you'll also see that specific "talent agency" has the same phone number. You'll also see said talent agent is involved in lawsuits with the said music group.

Personally, I wouldn't give them my financial information. Sounds like someone who runs several businesses out of their home which may or may not be legit.

If you decide to purchase then let us know your experience. Just my two cents...

I just wanted to thank all of you for your "constructive criticisms" and interest in my site, http://aaronsmyo.com
AaronsMYO is a registered Tobacco vendor licensed through the state of Florida.
All orders are "drop-shipped" from H.J. Bailey (http://www.hjbailey.com/cms/), our distributor in New Jersey, which has been around since 1932. We were their first experience with entering into the 'Internet Market', as for me it was just too inconvenient to maintain inventory and run to the post office daily. I find this arrangement more to my liking, a lot less hassle and enables me to keep the 'prices' low.
As for the reference to the 'Backstreet Boys' and Jeanne Tanzy...well it's all true and a matter of "Public Record", had Kev read a bit he would have discovered that Mrs. Tanzy was in fact "suing"...not being "sued" and has since, favorably settled 'out of court' with the constituents, 4 months prior to the scheduled trial date. I know this because she's my wife of over 26 years, which should explain all the other 'questionable' concerns that you have expressed.
All transactions are handled "Securely" through ECI-Pay (Gateway) and Northwestern Merchant Services (Credit Card Processor), all I ever receive from either is a notice of 'success' or 'failure' on the Credit transactions. Unless I'm standing 'behind' you at the time of your 'check out', I never see 'Credit Card #'s'...it was a security measure I opted for in order to remain "above suspicion".
Hopefully this short dissertation will clear the suspicions and encourage some of you to try us out...and if I "rip you off"...you can always send "MyFaceFrozeThatWay" that lives 20 miles away to check on the order!

Thanks Tim, for your compliment... as I am an avid motorcycle enthusiast and ride daily!

Cordially,
Lou Williams

Re: Aarons RYO web site??
Posted by Dano on Friday, 03-Mar-2006

I think a lot of the commentary about your website was generated because of a. nobody here having actually ordered from you before and b. the rather (for lack of a better word :) bizarre graphics (ie: skulls & motorcycles).

IMHO what plagues almost all online tobacco sites is a complete lack of intelligent website design. For instance, if I want to investigate a new tube that I might be interested in, I want a button on the main menu that says 'TUBES' :) and then be able to actually see a close up of the tube so I can judge the quality of the graphics on the tube and the box they come in, not some washed out shot from 5' away. By comparison, MYO Tobacco is the least annoying website, yours starts off good and then gets muddled with all the off the wall stuff, big fonts etc., J&R starts off good but gets way too distracting to the point of having to pick up the phone and Lil Brown's website should have the designer SHOT! I would never order anything from Lil Brown simply because they put so little thought into that digital disaster. Less is more! 40 Point Blue Fonts are kiddie city!

One more thing I would like to mention, on your website you say.. "All our Fine Products are "DROP-SHIPPED" to your door DIRECTLY from our Exclusive Distributor.." (HJBailey). HJB isn't YOUR exclusive anything, they supply half 1/2 of the smoke shops in the country. Every wonder why when you go into a smoke shop and they all carry the same thing?

I'm sure you're an honest guy trying to make a buck and I wish you all the best but honestly your prices are way out of wack on a lot of things and your shipping policy/charges should be clearly spelled out, not $9.50 and maybe we'll eat the cost if you order too much over.

Best of luck!
Dano

Posted by Lou Williams on Monday, 06-Mar-2006

Well Dano,
Without being argumentative and in closing this discussion...Statistics very simply state that "You can't please all the people all the time!" Being limited by "bandwidth" and as I don't profess to be anymore than what I am, or that my 'web design' meets the stringent standards of whatever socio/business guidelines, 'cause I have to be ME. My intent with AaronsMYO is to SELL the basic tobacco supplies as opposed to being an educational site, speaking of which:
http://www.ryomagazine.com/
The above site has always been helpful to me in doing product research/reviews etc.
As for our "Exclusive" distributor...well we use them "exclusively" and negotiated with them due to national popularity and longevity...What!?!
Most our orders average $100 + and I have yet to "tack-on" extra shipping, even though I take a loss on shipping costs, but then it's the cost of "Drop-Shipping" as I pay an additional $5 per order (handling), plus weight...so do the math...our shipping "flat fee" of $9.50 per order is not so 'unclear'...considering.
But thanks for your input...perhaps you should start your own site, after all "who's better equipped at pleasing oneself than yourself?"
Cordially,
Lou

Re: Aarons RYO web site??
Posted by Dano on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2006

You reminded me of a time back in the 60's when I was in college out in Oklahoma. As broke students we jaunted up to Tulsa for an adventure. Starving, we spied a roadhouse with a big sign advertising "Texas Toast All You Can Eat Buffet $2.95". On going back for 3rd's, the owner aghast at how his Buffet was being devoured by these young chow hounds mossied over and said, "Boys, you've had the $2.95 all you can eat, anymore is $5.95."

My point being, as a consumer and potential customer that when one says as your website does, "Any additional shipping cost incurred due to weight will be absorbed by us (within reason) past our 'STANDARD' rates.", that what may be reasonable to you may not be reasonable to me, and I would rather not find out after the fact. So my suggestion would be that you do the math, post it on your site so the Joe giving out his CC # can determine for himself what is or isn't "within reason" before cash changes hands.

This isn't a flame and I know you won't take it in that manner since your site so prominently says... "Got a comment, opinion, want to tell us how "GREAT" we are or just want to raise a little HELL...We are here!"

All The Best,
Dano

Re: Aarons RYO web site??
Posted by Lou Williams on Wednesday, 08-Mar-2006

Ok, Ok...I have to quit spending so much time here, but as a result, I have listened to the 'public' and will react positively. As I think we have narrowed the field of question to my phrase of "within reason" in reference to shipping...I'm going to remove that phrase, Tada!
And you made me reminisce as well, to my time in the 60's...what I could remember!?!
The difficulty with "doing the math" stems from the 'drop-shipping' issue, I don't know what I'm being charged (due to weight) for shipping till I receive my monthly PO's from the distributor. It was a major issue in the beginning negotiations with the distributor to establish those shipping rates...so I opted for "flat fee", it's just simpler and expedient.
With that said and being in the 'middle' of Bike Week...gotta go.

Thanks again for the feedback and we'll talk to ya'll later.
Lou

I am looking for a supplier for 1lb bags of Criss Cross and SYO machines as well. I am opening a retail SYO shop here. Any help would be apprecated. I have not found any info on this product (Criss Cross). I found it in a smoke shop not to far from me and believe it is perfect for replacement of most those that smoke Kools Newports & Malboro.

Have you received a tax bill from the Fed or State for cig's bought over the Internet?

If you received a tax bill, did they identify what you purchased or did they ask you to report what you purchased on the Internet?

I haven't--but then again, I have never bought cigarettes over the internet. A friend of mine did once; he purchased some nasty "Marlboros" from Russia, but he has since wised up and gone MYO....

I also have found them to be very good. Free shipping over 70$ to. They also have Gawith Hoggarth tobacco in bulk. GH has Kentucky,Mixture #7,Kendal Dark and Kendal Mixed. They are all shag cut and good for hand rolling. Expensive at 41$ for 500 grams but only 1.70 to roll a pack. They are all very strong nicotine wise but make a mellow smoke. Good for mixing to spice up or add nicotine to a RYO such as Lookout. I do it and am very happy with the results. It is listed as pipe tobacco but have no added chemicals or flavoring in the above mentioned mixtures.

Saw this site in a google search. The site is pretty decent and they have some of my favorites (5.29 oz Mac Baren for $8.49, 7.05 oz Look Out Milde for $8.99, 10.6 oz Stokkebye for $16.50, and 13 oz McClintock for $12.99) I sent a money order on monday and it shipped out to me on friday via UPS. (my tubes weren't crushed either) The shipping is $6.00 flat rate for UPS ground. Overall, I am very pleased with this vendor and am surprised I haven't seen them mentioned here.

Tobacco retailers, West
Posted by platoslostdialogue on Wednesday, 27-Jul-2005

Does anyone know of any online tobacco stores (aside from lil brown) that are on the west coast? I like lil brown a lot but doesn't have great selection of tobacco or tubes, and D&R is farther away than I like to wait for my shipment (for ground), and their shipping costs are a little high. I live in northern California

Great selection and very friendly proprietor. Just down the street from where Fiske intersects Lombard not far from Taco Bell. Tom's has become my preferred place of business for purchase of my supplies. Course this may be because he opened up shop right after I was introduced to MYO and is such a friendly guy. Carries a nice assortment of D&R tubs at good prices, selections of Cascade tobaccos and many other common and maybe not so common brands. Give him a visit if you live in the Portland area.

Stoker's #2
Posted by Jennifer S on Saturday, 22-Jan-2005

I use Stoker's #2 Ultra Light RYO tobacco in the one pound bag. I have searched on line and the lowest price I have found is just shy of $14, plus shipping.
My local discount smoke/tobacco shop sells it for $12.95 plus the regular local tax (which means it is either not taxed with all the tobacco taxes, or they are already added in to the $12.95).
I use the Premier Light 100 tubes and they are $2.69.
My net effect is around 87 cents a pack (20 cigs).
I am amazed that I can not find lower prices shopping on line!

Internet prices surprise me also. You would think they could be better. I buy locally from a place called Mr Smokes in North Huntington, PA. He sells Premier tubes for $1.40. Any quantity. Stokers is about $11.75 + 7% sales tax, same on tubes. He will UPS for actual cost.

Re: Stoker's #2/Internet Prices
Posted by Dave L on Friday, 11-Feb-2005

Lil' Brown has Stoker's #2 for $11.45LB. While their tube prices usually aren't the best, they currently have Rizla (I'd be very surprised if they aren't better than the Premiers) tubes for $1/box. RYOC typically has the best tube prices (currently 1.49 for CTC and Gizeh, $1.29 for McClintock).

The internet has a wider selection and is more convenient. I favor sites where I can make orders that cost me 10% (or less) for shipping. Buying Stoker's from Lil' Brown would cost me $.03 more than you pay at Mr Smokes. Having it delivered to my door is worth much more than that.

Does Mr Smokes stock Look-Out, Peter Stokkebye (all brands - PS, McClintock and Bali), Export A, etc.? Most local smokeshops, even a number of online stores, just don't sell enough MYO tobacco to stock much variety.

Internet Sales of Tobacco RYO Being Made Illegal

Bad News
Posted by Tim Aydt on Sunday, 11-Jul-2004

But, not as bad as it could be. The House resolution does not include the provision which makes it illegal to send tobacco products through the mail. It just creates a lot of red tape for anyone sending tobacco products throught the mail.

Re: Bad News

Government anti-smoking forces will continue enforce new regulations to limit the sale of smoking products including ryo tobacco. However, the demise of the tobacco growing quota and support price program has left open an interesting opportunity for the true RYO and SYO afficianando. Now, tobacco farmers can legally sell their whole leaf tobacco to anyone, not just on tobacco markets.
