Sagamore Canadian VS Penhooker?
Posted by Jeffo on Friday, 14-Mar-2008

Can someone maybe David Brown describe the taste and type of cut of Sagamore Canadian? Can you compare it to D&R Penhooker? I think I read in one of your recent posts that you smoke this blend fairly often. I like the Penhooker very much and have thought about trying the Sagamore Canadian since it should be close to this. RYO Tobacco only says this about it:
Refreshing light Classic Canadian taste. Very Mild with Loads of Flavor.

We got Sagamore Virginia this month. I've not tried the Canadian as we used smoke long cut for our daily smoke. I've tried a lot of the D&R's but not Penhooker. So I wouldn't be of much help.

I’ve been reading about Sagamore, Windagte and some others and certain tubes; however I can’t find out any places that actually sell them. When I go to search my specific brands it leads me to lots of message boards rather than an actual online store I can purchase this at cuz I also read that certain premium kind of tobaccos can’t be found in the store. Please someone help me out! I’m a noob.

Sagamore Long Cut
Posted by David Brown on Friday, 28-Sep-2007

First off let me be clear... I love a shag cut.

I just got our order for this month and we have been getting Tobacco Station FF Premium but we had heard and read good things about Sagamore that I figured we would try it this month.

I usually get a can or two of drum or bali during the month to get my shag fetish out of the way :) when I looked at RYO's site and saw the long cut I decided thats what we will smoke this month.

We got 6 lbs and since we have been ordering the large refill kits from tobacco station with 12 boxes of Zen ES tubes over a couple of months we got tubes coming out our ears and just got tobacco this month.

First 6 lbs for 80.95 aint bad at all, thats 11.49 per pound shipped.

Then to find a shag for that is outstanding. I love shag because if you fluff it up right it doesnt take as much to fill a tube and if the moisture is right it will expand back out into the tube and give a good draw.

I transfer my tobacco from the bags to 1 gallon jars when it comes in and the aroma of the sagamore long cut is a real good earthy smell with the consistency of moist moss.

The smoke has a slight hint of a pipe aroma (alot more pleasing to my wife than our normal smoke) and the taste is quite pleasing with no after taste at all (except in a vera cruz tube which to me is like smoking tobacco rolled in a brown grocery bag)

Overall we are quite pleased with sagamore long cut that we might actually make it our 24/7 smoke.

I am on my 10th or so smoke and I must say it is pretty darn tasty almost like a Dunhill.

Wierd, I'm doing just the opposite. I usually smoke Sagamore Virginia, I've tried every other Sagamore but the long cut. I'd like something a little lighter than the virginia so I tried the tobacco station mild in both American and Premium. I guess I must like a little bit of burley in my tobacco because I like the American blend better. I doubt if I'll abandon Sagamore Virginia but the tobacco station seems to be not quite as harsh. I've been blending a little two timer burley and turkish export to the virginia to tone it down a little but it seems like anything you blend with it corrupts it. I smoke the Sagamore virginia in a light tube but can smoke the American mild in a full flavor tube. Maybe I'll try the long cut next time I order.

I think that smoking one type for an extended time gets old just like everything else and it doesnt hurt to change up every now and then.

We loved tobacco station premium FF for a good 6-8 months then this last month we started getting tired of it everyday. Now we will give the Sagamore long cut a month or more but as of day one it is tasty and that might just be the newness

I've been stuffing my own for almost 3 years. I think I have tried every tobacco and tube made...or at least those that can be ordered on the Internet. I've tried most of the stuff from D&R, Peter Stokkebye, Zig Zag, McClintock, Gambler, Stoker, most of the house blends from Internet retailers, and on and on. Chucked a lot of tobacco in the trash. Life is too short to smoke bad tobacco. I've tried most every tube mentioned on this forum. I've never really found a tobacco and tube combination that I stuck with for very long. In fact, I thought my taste buds must be over sensitive because most of the tobacco and tubes that are raved on this forum taste bad, or at least not great, to me. The thing I kept finding was an unpleasant after taste.

Finally, I've found what I'm looking for. For my taste, Sagamore Natural stuffed in a Zig Zag light tube is what a cigarette should taste like. Another positive is the cut and that fact that it stuffs nicely. On the light side with great flavor. I am also a fan of the Sagamore Virginia but prefer the Natural.

I also like to get a pouch of Three Castles with each order. Good stuff...a little high in price. I read that some folks think that the Sagamore Platinum compares to the Three Castles. IMHO the Three Castles is much better. The Sagamore Platinum seems to have a "spice" taste that I don't care for. I don't care for the Sagamore Light Blend or Canadian either. The Canadian also seems to have a spice after taste I don't care for.

In my opinion, the Three Castles tubes, and most of the new tubes with the longer filters, are terrible. I just can't seem to find a tube any better than Zig Zag. Quality construction with no weird taste or after taste.

i was forced to buy a couple of my first and last boxes of premier king sizes.....I am about to order tubes and you all have me convinced to be open for a minute....dare I skip the zen's?? what about Rizla FF, they always seem to get wonderful neutrality marks.....you know,(asking about) compared to the zig-zag.(and anything else recommended as best)..I want FF's whatever I get
thanks in advance
m
another thing, I couldn't tell a filter length difference between the old stock Zen's filter and the premier filters, only that the latter are smaller tubes in diameter but the Zens fill all the way...hmmmm?????????

I just received my first order of Sagamore tobaccos and tried their Natural. My first impressions: It's a very smooth smoke, no hurt at all and just a slight hint of spice. It has a subtle but satisfying flavor and seems to have a very nice feel in the mouth. It's not boring, there's some good flavor there, like a good table wine would have, not outstanding but pleasant. It also seems to be very low in free nicotine. As PrarieStar wrote, it stuffs very nicely, it seems to have just the right moisture level straight from the bag. These are just my subjective first impressions.

Sagamore Virginia
Posted by NewtoSYO on Wednesday, 11-Apr-2007

I have just recently gotten into the whole Stuffing Your Own scene after 10 years of paying outrageous prices for inferior commercial smokes (although I still love dunhills now and then). After sampling many different brands (American Spirit, Three Sails, Bali shag, Arbo, PS Turkish and Danish) I think i have settled on a daily tobacco with the Sagamore Virgina.

I'm stuffing with silver tip lights and I am quite happy. It is very smooth, no harshness. The warning on the bag said it might be dry, but not so for me. At 15 bucks per pound it is hard to not love this tobacco.

I also picked up a sample of the Sagamore Platinum Vanilla, and I think I think i will be ordering this as well for a "dessert" smoke.

It's become one of my main smokes now, replacing Windsail Platinum because Sagamore Virginia's flavour has been far more consistent from bag to bag and also because its a touch sweeter, which I prefer as well. However, I'm hoping that the Rowland Gold proves to be closer to the elusive and legendary McClintock Virginia than either Windsail Platinum or SV are.

Sagamore Clove?

Any clove smokers in the house? Ever try the Sagamore Clove?

I've enjoyed clove cigs occasionally over the years, so I just decided to add a 1 oz sample to my order.

Obviously, I'm about to find out for myself in the next few days, but does anyone have any experience with it? How does it compare to Djarum?

I haven't tried it and at $40.00 a pound I probably won't be. Seems strange to be saying that when not too long ago I didn't have a problem with paying $50.00 a carton or $100.00 a pound for premades. I doubt that it's going to be much like Djarum, from what I've read about Djarum it contains A LOT of clove and the filter is laced with other spices like cinnamon and cardamom.

I did try the sagamore clove. Very clovey. I liked it, I'm not much of a clove smoker, I occasionally like the smell of it. One of my coworkers is a clove smoker and I gave her some and she really liked them better than her djarums. I was even mixing the clove with some other tobacco. I bought their sample. I remember I made a bunch with that sample size - like at least 2 packs.

Re: Sagamore Clove?
Posted by Kizer Sosa on Thursday, 12-Apr-2007

Yep, you're right... this has a lot of clove in it. The sample is ziplocked tight, but it still is making the whole cupboard smell like cloves (and the area just outside it too). Lots of sticks and stems as well, tho it might be the cloves I'm looking at. Overall, good stuff!

That said, I'm not sure I'll buy more, certainly not a whole pound of it. I like cloves once in a while as a break from the ordinary. At $4.00 for the sample ounce, I could buy a pack of Djarums for about the same price and get my kicks that way.

If you're a hardcore clove smoker, this is something to look into... but if you're a "once-in-a-whiler", then I don't think it'll deliver the cost to benefit ratio.

I've tried the sagamore clove.
Make no mistake, it is POWERFUL!
It was obvious when I got my order that the person that stuffed it into the baggie didn't have a glove on because all the other tobacco in the order reeked of cloves. REALLY REEKED OF CLOVES!

It was moist and stuff-able but over all a store bought clove cig is much much better.

I'm a McClintock V smoker. I've found the Sagamore V to be kinda harsh. I really didn't like it. I found the Windsail Platinum to be more to my taste but it misses that sweetness of the McV. I also found that if you add a bit of the SJ Perique (from D&R tobacco) to the WS Platinum it's pretty tasty.

I really don't go for all this mixing tobacco crap. I want to buy a good tobacco, stuff it and smoke it, not do a science class. So, if D&R's new Roland Gold isn't all it's supposed to be in regard to being McV's replacement, then I guess i'll be doing the Windsail P with some Perique in it :)

If you think that's good (and it is), then try the Sagamore Platinum Gold.

You'll be blown away by the smoothness and flavor of this tobacco. There's no comparison, IMHO.

Super fine cut and very moist. It has to be gently pulled apart and allowed to air out a bit on the counter before it can be injected (I let it sit out for a half hour or so before transferring to a tupperware).

But man, this is some excellent stuff. Smoke a stick, and you want another right away... not for the nicotine, but just because it tastes so damn good. To be honest, I need to check my consumption.. this stuff is really too easy to smoke just because it's so mellow.

Right now, I'm injecting it in Mascotte Light and Silver Tip Light tubes. I plan on trying it in a FF tube in order to experience the full taste... I imagine that it'll be a very nice experience.

Sorry if it looks like I'm overselling the stuff, but I gotta say this is what tobacco is supposed to be. Best smoke I've had in almost 30 years of lighting up.

Also, two thumbs up for the folks who sell this stuff, RYO Tobacco. Easy and flawless ordering, and a flat rate of $7.50 for priority mail makes it even easier. They've earned my biz.

Here is D&R's description. "A light bodied, British style Virginia Blend.. Special leaf selection and blending, and an extra fine cut give this exceptional blend its unique character and elegance. Contains 100% flue-cured Gold Leaf tobaccos. Natural preservatives added." It looks exactly like Sagamores platinum gold. Both products are obviously aimed at Three Castles fans. I'm looking for a base to use for blending my daily smoke. I've narrowed it down to four choices. I like Sagamore platinum gold but I don't care for the "spice" they add to it. It has to be cloves and leaves a stinging sensation on my tongue. I've stuffed it in Charbon tubes and that helps. Here is my take on the four. Three sails is the strongest, not as smooth and mellow as the rest, next would be the Sagamore platinum gold, which doesn't seem to have as strong a nicotine hit but is more mellow but then there is that tongue burning "spice" thingie. Then D&R's Windsail, which is about right as far as smooth and mellow goes but it is blended with that vile, nasty, funky tasting Ramback which I detest. I can pick that stuff out even if it's used in another blend from another manufacturer. Funny because I really like PS Turkish export. Probably the best is Sagamore's virginia, the only problem with it is that it's just toooo smooth. Like smoking an ultra ultra light with two charcoal filters and a tar blocker. I can see myself chaining them. I have some Sagamore light but haven't tried it yet. I will probably end up with a blended base of a couple of them.

Spice? Clove? Not sure where you're getting that from... I'm pretty sensitive when it comes to that type of stuff in my tobacco.. I'll definitely notice it if it's in there, but I'm smoking a Platinum Gold right now and I'm not picking up on any spice notes at all.

Am I missing something or are my tastebuds finally shot? ;)

Re: Sagamore Virginia

I wonder if that spicy taste is the result of tongue bite. I found with the 3 platinum tobaccos I've tried that ship very moist. I got that tongue bite sensation when I either stuffed/rolled too tight or if I didn't let it dry out a bit. About 10-20 minutes spread out in a thin layer worked for me. One more thing, if I untangled the clumps it seemed smoother too.

My guess is the higher moister content forces it to burn at a higher temperature and thus the tongue bite.

They give you a hint in their description. "You will find this tobacco to be pleasantly flavorful with a little spice unlike many other light tobaccos."

I think that flavorful spice is clove. I can smell it when I open the package. I don't think it has anything to do with how tight the tubes are stuffed or the moisture level. The sensation is more of a stinging, like one would get from a hot sauce rather than a tobacco smoking hot, which is more of a burning sensation.

Sagamore Virginia
Posted by Wazmo Nariz on Friday, 09-Feb-2007

I ordered a couple pounds of SV last week and finally got around to breaking into it today. It's a beautiful golden yellow colour with a long, rough cut which stuffed perfectly. The tobacco, despite a warning label on the bag stating that it may be dry, was also the perfect moisture level, although I did give it a lite mist with some distilled water because I dumped a pound out to breathe for awhile and the humidity level here in Florida is surprisingly low today.

This is most certainly a Virginia tobacco...it has a nice, sweet Virginia taste that isn't too overbearing or obvious. Not harsh, either...in fact, it was pleasantly mild tasting in a Zig-Zag Light tube and burned fairly slow; I think the first stick I made smoked for about 9 or 10 minutes (admittedly, I do tend to stuff 'em just a tad firmer). It's my experience that quality golden Virginia gives up more of it's flavour when the moisture level is exactly right and when it burns just a little slower.

I'm not sure that I would tell anyone it's perfectly close to McClintock Virgina, but it isn't too wide of the mark to say it's somewhat similar. All in all, I'm pleasantly surprised, especially at the single pound price of just $15/pound with a nice discount for over three pound purchases. I'll order it again... .

OK, I took the bait about the Virginia stuff.

Just ordered a pound of the Sagamore Virginia, and a sample of both the Sagamore Gold and Natural.

We shall see what we shall see...

Honestly, I don't think I've ever smoked "Virginia" yet. My main go-to tobacco choices have been PS Norwegian and Turkish. Locally available and easy to get at $20/can. Also tried a can of American Spirit US Grown, as well as the basic 4 can sample pack from D&R.

So what's with this Virginia you speak of? I guess I'm going to find out soon whether I like it or not, but really, what's the attraction for Virginia tobacco?

In the meantime, should I buy a mist bottle and some distilled water? ;)

Re: Sagamore Virginia

If you've been smoking PS Norwegian and Turkish, you've been smoking some Virginia tobaccos, albeit cured/aged differently from brightleaf Virginia (the kind I prefer for everyday smoking) and blended with other tobaccos.

Virginia tobacco is mild to medium taste/strength-wise and also has the largest amounts of dextrose, which gives it the typical sweet, sometimes nutty taste. Brightleaf Virginia is flue-cured and results in a yellow/golden to light golden brown appearance. It's the tobacco used in the Sagamore VA, McClintock VA, Windsail Platinum, and other golden/yellow varieties.

I've always had a taste for flue-cured Virginia especially, but almost any Virginia in the main because I like the mildness and the sweet and subtle nutty taste. It probably isn't for anyone who likes a strong, kick-ass smoke with spicy or smokey flavours.

Sagamore Platinum GoldBe careful, this stuff is highly addictive! I started out smoking it as a desert cigarette, and within a week, I couldn't smoke anything else! I also like Three Castles, but the Sagamore Platinum Gold seems to have a slightly softer flavor. Both are finely hand cut, but the Sagamore Platinum has more moisture in it. Not cheap at $30LB plus shipping, ($6 per 50 gram tin) but less expensive than Three Castles, and I prefer it to Three Castles, even if they were the same price. If you like a light hand rolled cigarette, you won't be disappointed with Sagamore Platinum Gold. It's some of the best tobacco I've ever smoked.

A few months ago I tried the Auld Kendall Gold and was very impressed. The tin was cool and well sealed (best seal job I've ever seen in a tobacco actually), and the tobacco very moist. It's good stuff, tastes much cleaner than Bali Red or Three sails or the other stokebye dutch blends. I bought a pound of Sagamore Platinum Gold a couple weeks ago at the outrageous price of $30/lb. Basically, at this price, it better be good, and it is. I also tried a 50 g puch (no more cool tins) of the Sagamore PLatinum Medium, which is decent but bland for how strong the aroma is and it kind of reminds me of smoking deoderant. They're good treat tobaccos but I can't smoke them all day.

McV after 3 days seems fine for everyday use.

After a two week trial of Sagamore Virginia as a replacement for McClintock Virginia, Sagamore is currently the most likely candidate. The Sagamore is a bit milder, less finely cut and springier than McV, and also has a few stems, but overall the two brands are a close match for my purposes.

McV was my everyday replacement for Windsail a few years ago because Windsail began having uniformity problems. Actually, McV wasn't an extremely close match to Windsail, but it's what I settled on. Hoping that Windsail's problem had been fixed, I tried the new Windsail Platinum some months ago, and the bags contained in the single order had the same problem with uniformity. Subsequently, I read similar opinions in this forum. I do not know if Sagamore has uniformity problems.

Although all excellent and of high quality, I do not find the following brands to match McV as closely as Sagamore Virginia: Danish Export, Auld Kendal Golden, Lane Golden Virgina, Bali Shag Golden, Three Castles, Fairmorn Bright Virginia, Arbo Mild American.

McV was packaged with rolling papers; Sagamore is not. If you RYO, not SYO, price comparison requires including the additional purchase of papers for Sagamore.

Have you tried S.J. Rimboche? It has a very good tasting virginia thats blended 80-20 with perique. The tobacco uses no additives that i sometimes would detect in Windsail, though i recommend ordering tubs and not pouches, The quality is more coinsistent and the tobacco more fresh in tubs.

Sagamore Light
Posted by JD on Monday, 28-Nov-2005

Anyone with experience smoking this blend? I was thinking of trying a pound, but was wondering about the tobaccos used (I haven't found anything specific, and my e-mail to RYOT has gone unanswered for almost a week. Must be the holidaze....). A review, anyone?

Sagamore Virginia question
Posted by Bob on Saturday, 26-Nov-2005

Would someone here give me their thoughts on the Sagamore Virginia described on RYO's site as a "light English Virginia tobacco". My usual smokes are McClintock Virginia & PS Danish export along with D&R's Ramback gold, I don't care for burley except the type now marketed by D&R's two timer. I guess my bottom line question is it about the same as Sagamore light? or really stands apart as a low price bulk tobacco for we non burley people!

I emailed RYOT because I noticed the Harvest (now down to #2 only) was disappearing, the Sagamore Mild American was no longer listed, and the Virginia was new on the list. I asked what the Virginia was closest to (PS Danish, Lane Virginia, McClintock Virginia, or ??). The reply was that the Sagamore Virginia is closest to McClintock Virginia and Harvest is out of business (no reply on the Mild American).

Thanks! After a little humidification I found the Sagamore Virginia (in silvertip light tubes) a real nice blend, I have had Sagamore light in the past & would buy it just to stretch whats left of my every day fav; McClintock Virginia & would buy it if my wallet was slim over H&R & other RYO's in this price range. I still have my favorites of Stockkbye Danish, Ramback gold...BUT this is still a good smoke-at a good price!

Anybody fired any of this stuff up yet and formulated a review? My main smokes are D&R Windsail Platinum and PS London Export; I'm sure the Sagamore Virginia isn't quite the same as either of those (I'd be happy to be told otherwise, though!), but I might be interested in giving it a try, especially since the quantity discount is so sweet. What's the buzz?

Sent an e-mail to RYO about this blend...the cut, tobaccos used, etc. Quite an unhelpful one line reply..."I suggest you try some." Thanks!

I've had a lot of curt responses from these folks when it comes to contacting them about info or problems. I quit dealing with 'em after they once told me that an overly dry bag of tobacco (not just dry, but damn near totally brittle) I'd ordered was my responsibility to remoisten. Not impressed with 'em, to say the least.

I had the same problem when Rick bought up all the old chills & was RE packing it as his Sagamore halfzware. DRY? BRITTLE? NOTHING BUT DUST? YES---all the previous! This was when he started to REhydrate & package so Rick understood when I called & yelled about "what kind of junk are you selling here" routine-If I want to rehydrate dust I dont expect to pay much for tobacco we know he did'nt pay much for to begin with.
He made it right & sent me more than I had ordered that was REhydrated to a good usable level. I'am sure Rick learned a lesson about quality with those first batches of repacked tobacco & recieved many calls like mine & learned the hard way but I think overall for the price the Sagamore is a great low price bulk tobacco & although I'am more of a McClintock Virginia & D&R Ramback gold 'kind of guy' I dont order from
http://www.ryotobacco.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc
much anymore but I would not now hasten to order the Sagamore/Sagamore light that I think is just as good as Andron's Turkish special, stay arm out there! its 0 here in Minn.

This is my third order for Sagamore. I ordered 3 lbs of light for my wife and 3 lbs of menthol for myself. Hopefully this will last till after the holidays! Both of us really like Sagamore and find the taste and the lack of after taste of the tobacco to be more in line with what we were smoking for years (pre mades).
We tried lots of other tobacco, some good and some bad. We found this stuff to be the best for us.
I also like D&R's Wingate Gold and I sometimes blend 1 pt Wingate Gold, 1 pt Sagamore Virginia, 2 pt Sagamore menthol. Measured bulk and not weighed blends.
This makes an exceptional light smoke, with Virginia blends from the Wingate and Sagamore Virginia and the burly and oriental from the Sagamore Menthol. This is my pleasure smoke, and the Sagamore Menthol is my everyday smoke. LOVE THAT SAGAMORE!!!!!!!

Sagamore Natural Blend
Posted by Tim S. on Wednesday, 12-Oct-2005

I got my 6 LB of the sagamore natural blend, it has fairly good packaging and was 6 one pound bags. First thing I noticed was that it really is a blend of 3 or tobacco's, and has a look of freashness to it. Also it's not a flat cut, it has much more spring to the tobacco then the criss cross I been using.

It looks more like a home made blend, from fresh tobacco leafs then any thing to me. I thought it would be like repackaged, tobacco but it was not like that at all. It was a little on the dry side, not to much so and the label said it could be, and to spray a little destilled water on it if needed. As natural blends tend to dry out a little more, then tobacco with addatives in them.

The feel of the tobacco is nice, and it injects good with my supermatic blue. There was very little shake tobacco from this blend, and it was easy to notice the different tobacco's are blended really good. From what I seen, it's got 3 or more different tobacco's in the blend as well.

The tobacco it self smokes well, a little on the strong side with perm king tubes. But not overly so, it's not harsh and has alots of flavor to it. It's not a bad tobacco at all, and I would go as far as to say, it's a really very nice smoking natural blend so far.

One thing I do feel after smoking this blend, is that a natural blend is limited in some ways. Like I can tell the flavor is of all natural tobaccos, where as with addatives added they take and smooth the tobaccos out more. Or bring out other things more, not that it's a good or bad thing at all just that I can tell the differance is all.

This tobacco may not be the best on the market, but it's a really good tobacco for sure. I do not think for the price, that you will found a better natural blend any place. On a scale of 1 to 10, and 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. I would rate this a 9 at best and a 8 at worst, but that being with my limited use of RYO tobacco's. Tim S.

Sagamore Natural Blend
Posted by RMorris on Thursday, 28-Apr-2005

This is a good tobacco. Finally got my wife into SYO & got her a Excel. Started her on the american spirt original blend. In a 'blind' test she choose Sagamore Natural Blend over american spirt original, american thrust light, american thrust Additive Free, goldern harvest natural&light, bali golden(red can),single stick&pure natural. (thank the tobacco gods for american thurst 1oz samples). Former winston smoker(wife) for 20+years. For my tastes it is a little light. It tastes almost like a winston ( to us),injects very easy, not hot burning. If you are looking for a mild smoke this is the one !!!!!

Sagamore Light
Posted by Tim Aydt on Tuesday, 30-Nov-2004

RYO Tobacco's house brand, not to be confused with their House Blend which is made in Germany. My wife and I have smoked about ten pounds of Sagamore Light as a base. I wasn't overly impressed at first, just a good flavor, but nothing spectacular. It wasn't until I switched back to H&R Light that I realized how good it really is.

Sagamore Light has more casings than H&R, People's Pride, Stokers #2, etc, but you can taste a smoother, better tobacco under those casings and the casings impart an nice flavor to the tobacco. After I try out Double Take, I will be switching back to Sagamore Light for my base. Unless, of course, Double Take is some phenominal tobacco that just blows it away. Ha.

Sagamore Light is $15.00 per pound, with quantity discount it is as low as $11.50 per pound. Making it very reasonable.

Sagamore Halfzware
Posted by Tim Aydt on Tuesday, 30-Nov-2004

According to Ric G, at RYO Tobacco, Sagamore Halfzware is the exact same as Chills Americana Halfzware. As I've stated elsewhere, I believe him. It looks and tastes the same. A very good halfzware, as good as any I have tried and better than several.

At $15.00 per pound or less, it is the most reasonable Halfzware on the market.

Since the Chills Americana Halfzware is no longer, I was happy to find Tim did his research into this. I just received my Sagamore Halfzware and I am very happy. This Halfzware reminds me more of Jester than Drum in that it has a faint hint of Java (or something), which is done right. For the price, this has got to be the best Halfzware available. RYOmagazine had great reviews of the original Chills, so I'm glad I found that it is now being marketed under the Sagamore brand at at RYO Tobacco. Overall I would rate this as a top value and a pretty darn good smoke to boot.

"How does it compare to Stokkebye No. 93 Amsterdam?"

Not as good. It is a cheaper alternative but does not stand up to the Amsterdam. The Sagamore is a nice halfzware, it comes in bulk, it is inexpensive. It is as good as it gets for the price. It is not as good as Stokkebye by any stretch, but very smokable.

Sagamore Canadian
Posted by Tim Aydt on Tuesday, 30-Nov-2004

From RYO Tobacco, a Canadian blend that I find similar to Export A. Let me qualify that, by saying, that Canadian blends are not my thing (sorry guys) and it was several months between trying the two, so I am not able to reliably report subtle nuances between the two. As always, if you like Canadian blends, give it a try.

$15.00 per pound and down to $11.50 with quantity discount.

My wife is very finicky about her tobacco, and I thought I wouldn't find anything she'd like as much as Classic Canadian, but I switched to the Sagamore Canadian, and she never noticed till I brought it up. Cheaper, and easier to find! Much less shake in the bag, too. Recommended for a clean, light blend.

Hey Stan, I had the opportunity to try both the Sagamore Canadian, and the Virginia samples 1 ounce baggies. I thought that the Virginia was the mildest of the two. My wife used to smoke G.P.C Ultralights, but now smokes Sagamore light tobacco, with the Premier light tubes. To make them ultra lights, she pokes 1 hole in the filter tip, it really makes a mild smoke!
I am considering buying a pound of the Virginia, as I think it would make an excellent blending tobacco, with something like D&R's Wingate Gold (to water down the strong menthol). I'll probably start with a 50/50 mix, and go from there. I hope this may help you.
P.S. I am currently smoking Sagamore menthol, and like it very much, but I am still looking for the ultimate blend!

Yes Stan the Canadian, and the Virginia are both light smoking types of tobacco. As always it's a matter of personal taste with tobacco. It might be worth it to try their sampler packs, although it is rather expensive to pay $6.50 for shipping.
