I sent this info to Dave a while back, guess I'll add the update here.

Arango Sportsman Vanilla is listed under D&R in various MSA lists, as being available in 5.29oz can & 10oz bag. Curious, I asked Mark Ryan about it and was told Mac Baren decided the MSA was too much hassle, so dropped out last year and no longer exports Rolling tobacco to the US.

Mike G. from Arango Cigar Co. called Mark and specifically requested that he manufacture a replacement for the Mac Baren blend. So Mark spent quite a bit of time on it trying to match the Mac Baren blend, and said the end result smokes nearly identical, although he couldn't quite match the aroma in a freshly opened can.

Not sure if it has filtered through the distribution channels to retail yet, but if you're a Big Fan of the Mac Baren blend you might want to stock up before the old stock disappears. Same goes for Mac Baren's "American Blend", "Halfzware" and "Jason" which have no replacement that I'm aware of.

Thanks, I updated the topic. I talked with Arango Cigar and, while the person I talked to didn't know the details, he said that Jason is their brand name and that they had no plans to discontinue it, that only the Mac Baren brand name blends will be discontinued.

Just wondering if you know what the name of the D&R replacement for the Arango Sportsman Vanilla is and if it is available to purchase online as I live in Canada.

Thanks!

I agree, Arango Sportsman is an incredibly good, vanilla flavored tobacco. It makes the Lookout Vanilla shag seem like lawn clippings. OK, maybe that's a little extreme, but it's really good. It was such a pleasure to not have to pick out lots of junk as I blended it with other tobaccos. The flavor is robust, a little goes a long way.

I'm very impressed with this offering from Mac Baren and look forward to trying their other tobacco blends.

RICH VANILLA FLAVORED FINE CUT TOBACCO; IF YOU DONT LIKE FLAVORED TOBACCO ITS NOT FOR YOU-ALSO NOT FOR THE LIGHT OF HEART AS ITS VERY RICH ALMOST TO THE POINT OF PIPE TOBACCO & COULD BE USED AS A LITE PIPE TOBACCO-IF YOU DO LIKE THE STRONG VANILLA FLAVORING IT MIXES VERY WELL WITH LIGHTER TOBACCOS FOR JUST A HINT OF VANILLA-DOUG FROM www.ryomagazine.com/index.htm says
"This is also a high grade Danish blend but with a delightful vanilla flavor in a bit larger, more traditional cut than the Jason. Unlike most flavored cigarette tobaccos you can tell that this one was developed as an aromatic blend from the start. Rather than simply adding flavoring as an afterthought, this blend seems to have been cured and flavored throughout the aging process to be a much milder and tasty blend with none of the after-taste that is often associated with flavored tobaccos. However Mac Baren accomplished this, it smells as nice as fine vanilla pipe tobacco but has none of the characteristic harshness of pipe tobacco when inhaled. This one is a very smooth pleasant experience for those who like flavored tobaccos and especially for those who normally find cigarette smoke offensive. It works equally well in a pipe and burns very smoothly and evenly in either medium. Sportsmen comes in both a 5.29 ounce can and a 10 ounce bag. If you like vanilla you will love this blend. Yumm!

I was eager to try this after reading Doug's review in RYO magazine. As far as flavored tobaccos go I like the harvest cherry & have tried some lookout vanilla shag but my usual smoke is D&R's penhooker light & McClintock virginia with a little Ramback turkish blended in.
Anyway- a little goes a LONG way! I can smoke a filterless Danish export or export A but this is really STRONG VANILLA & I had to dilute it with mixing in some neutral tasting tobacco to 'cut' it down a bit, high quality tobacco but also very strong & not a cheap flavor added tobacco, gosh- I have not had any in a few weeks, think I'll go tube one up!

I picked up a can on sale at RYO for $10 (5.29 oz). It's strong (flavor) so I only use about a 1 to 10 ratio mixing it with my Stokers base. Much better than the Lookout vanilla.
