As a studying herbologist - people nowadays call it an herbalist - I have noted nearly certain harmful side-effects to come from a small amount of Wintergreen plant ingestion. I also happen to be in the market for a flavor other than D&R "Athey" and WinterGold peaked mine interest. Has anybody experienced any extraordinary side-effects of smoking WinterGold over any period of time? (Hopefully not!) Please respond a.s.a.p. as I am always looking to experiment with new D&R products I can use as an every-day smoke without having to mix with others. On a side-note, I have never studied the effects of SMOKING the herb Wintergreen, which is why I am wondering. If anybody has other additional information on the formula used and if it's a wise one, please communicate a.s.a.p.

Thank You

John Jay

The understated wintergreen flavor highlights the flue cured base nicely, making for a very smooth and somewhat sweet smoke. Mild enough to be smoked all day long. Cant even imagine blending this with a cheap recon ridden mentholated tobacco either. Very good with a little Wingate though. YMMV :)

Just got my first 14 oz bag of this a few days ago, and I have to say it's exactly what I was looking for. A very smooth sweet smoke, wish it was available locally. I automatically cut the first batch with a bit of vanilla tobacco out of pure habit, and won't be doing that again. This stuff is excellent all by itself. If you like any kind of flavored smokes at all, the smooth wintergreen taste will not make you sorry you tried it.

I've been smoking a 60/40 mix of Two Timers/ WinterGold for a few days now. This seems to be a great daily smoke, not too harsh on the throat. I used to be a Parliament Light guy but I'm myo all the way now.

I am a menthol smoker and I am just about ready to put this wintergold in the trash. I can't even use it to blend with iceberg, the taste to me is so undesireable. I'm not familiar with tobacco lingo, cant even use those words to describe wintergold and why I dont like it. I do like the Wingate Light, and the two are definitely different from each other.

What kind of tube are you using with the Wingate Gold?
I think I shall try some.

I use a couple of tubes actually, depending on my mood. I usually stuff with either Rizla or Three Castles. I like the quality of the tubes and the full bodied taste they deliver. When I am in the mood for a lighter taste (but with more of a menthol impact) I use Menthotips from Gizeh. These come across much milder, but since I simply love the taste of menthol they are a nice change of pace. Menthotips are not marketed as a light tube, but at least to me they are noticeably milder. The menthol tubes do allow me to mix down the amount of menthol tobacco. I take my smoking very seriously and I have found that it is fun to try different combinations, kind of like a hobby.

I have always liked my cigarettes to be on the strong side (I am a former Salem smoker)so someone who is used to a lighter cigarette may find these too overwhelming. My wife can handle the Menthotip variations, but the Rizlas and Three Castles are too strong for her on a regular basis. I have found that when I have been deprived of a cigarette for a couple of hours, these are just the ticket for me.

If you were a full flavor Salem\Newport\Kool smoker with pre-mades you will love the full flavor tubes. If you used to smoke light pre-mades then I would suggest you try a box of Menthotips.

Good luck, and be sure to report back here with your observations.

Ken

I read that this was comparable to Nat Sherman's Touch of Mint. As a fan of those, I gave it a shot.

Well, it tastes nothing like Sherman's. Not even close, really. However, as a previous poster stated, it makes an awesome blender for a menthol tobacco.

I usually smoke Iceberg with a 30% blend of McClintock Virginia to cut the overboard menthol flavor, and to add some richness. I was saddened to learn that McClintock Virginia was discontinued, but not any more. As WinterGold is a much superior blender. Adding richness, and subtle flavors of nutmeg and wintergreen.

If you usually cut your menthol tobacco, I could not recommend Wintergold enough. My wife really likes it by itself, but I found it a bit too delicate as a stand alone.

Each order I send to D&R for my preferred tobaccos (Ramback and the two Rimboche Perique blends) gives me the opportunity order one of the small tubs (they call them "cups") of another tobacco just to try it out. With my most recent order, I ordered a 3.5 oz. tub of Wintergold.

I'm delightfully surprised. I anticipated a strong menthol flavor, but the Wintergold is not menthol. Rather, it is lightly flavored with wintergreen oil, which results in a lightly sweet undertone. It's a bright sweetness, but subtle enough that you can still taste the underlying Virginia tobacco. It's delicious and a very pleasant and lighter change from the richer and heavier flavor of the two Periques that I smoke almost exclusively.

The cut is finer than the standard American cut, but not as fine as the Dutch and Danish halfzwaars. I'd call it a long-stranded fine American cut, if that makes sense. It stuffs wonderfully, burns smoothly and cooly, even at the end of the stick. As delivered, the moisture content was just right. I use a full-flavor tube (McClintock right now, shortly moving to Silver Tip), so smokers using light tubes might have a milder experience.

The smoke is quite mild, has a pleasant aroma, and doesn't leave a heavy aftertaste. The lack of an aftertaste and its smooth and cool burning attributes I reflect the lack of any casings or additives beyond the wintergreen oil.

In all, I'd recommend the D&R Wintergold to anyone.

I've been using this as a component in a menthol cigarette. I find that it lives a fantastic minty aftertaste on the exhale. As a menthol component it can't be beat, it helps to chill out some of those ultra-menthol RYO/SYO tobaccos out there and provides a unique addition to the menthol smoke some have grown to love and enjoy.

~$17.00 to $27.00 depending on unit size.

The maker's description: "An exciting combination of natural Wintergreen leaf oils and a blend of 100% Gold Leaf tobaccos has produced a great tasting, smooth and refreshing RYO experience. This delicious aromatic blend is a flavorful and satisfying alternative for menthol smokers. No casings added."

Not menthol, but wintergreen. I despise menthol, and the only "flavored" tobacco I've ever liked is Athey by this same manufacturer. I got a free sample of WinterGold, and I can't say that I despised it. It's just not my thing, but it's WAY better than menthol.
