I worked for a tobacco store for 12 years. The company doesn't seal the seal you use, they seal the bag. When you tear the top off, you have broken the original seal. Then when you close it with your seal, it's reusable. The only time your seal is sealed is because one of the workers at the tobacco store sealed your seal. I know for a fact, I used to do it too.

Put your large bag in freezer(use chipbag clips to seal) to lock in moisture and use a smaller refillable pouch for daily use. also possibly change tobacco stores,I'm not sure but your tobacco provider may be buying discounted products if the wholesalers provide cheaper options due to damaged product

I've been smoking the Golden Harvest natural for years, and, lately, especially since, yet another, change in packaging, so it's very difficult to see the tobacco, the tobacco itself has been very chopped up - like sawdust. I have so much waste.

On the shelf, their mint blend tobacco is long and not stems. My guess is that they don't care about their loyal customers at all -- they never respond to an inquiry -- which, for me, makes them less than a "good" business. But, they probably know that if I haven't changed brands by now, I'll put up with sawdust if it doesn't have additives.

Sure makes me a sucker, eh?

So. Golden Harvest is what got me back into RYO, or better yet, SYO. Worked great with a handheld injector, but recently I decided to buy a top-o-matic. Primarily, i've been using bull-durham menthol, but while it stuffs like a dream and I barely have any issues with underfill, I prefer golden harvest for the price. Pound for 16 rather than half pound for 18.

My issue is, not sure if its too moist, too long/thick cut or what, but I can do maybe one or two perfect cigarettes and then I have to start holding the tube to get it to stuff. A few later, even after clearing/blowing out the chamber, it gets to the point where I can barely even move the arm after compressing. Not sure if anyone else has had this issue with GH but yeah, seems to be a problem.

Will dry it out and post another review if it solves the issue

I had the same problem, my top o matic broke while using Golden Harvest. I don't know if I would blame them, but the type of tobacco could be a factor. Check the gears under the crank (bottom side). The big gear on mine bent to the point where it was beyond fixing. Just make sure you don't force the crank if you
feel heavy resistance. It WILL break.

It is the tubes that I'd the problem. I have the same set up and I found the cheaper the tube the worst to fill. Always slipping and not getting filled all the way. I have used GH tubes for years now. They really do make a big difference. Try it out and you will see the difference

i use gh mint and gh blackberry pipe tobaccos and a tube injecter. i have no problem getting the coarser cut to stay in the tubes and the blend is perfect for my taste. i'm going to go out on a limb this month and try a house blend that has more of a choice of exotic flavors. we shall see. but at least i know that i can come back to gh and be happy.

I saw this at a local smoke shop for 10.39 a pound, so I decided I'd give it a try. It was pretty moist and has strong smell I can't quite figure out. In trying it leaves some kinda of aftertaste, that I just didn't care for. I let it dry out for a day and tried it again. Dried out a little, it's much better. I didn't notice the aftertaste and it actually wasn't a bad smoke. Not as good as some of the others I've tried, but not as bad as some that i had to mix to get rid of. Not bad for the price, if you let dry out a little.

I just discovered the world of RYO and I am liking it!! I use to smoke Marlboro Ultra lights and have tried a bunch of different types. I have tried the Zig-zag light, Midnight special, Drum, American spirit and now GH. I started to like the ZZ but not being a light smoker it was hard. After purchasing about 6 different types of stuff I came to the conclusion that the GH ultra light is exactly like my name brand smoke. I know it may taste like crap to some people but it is all a preference. It is kind of hard after smoking a pack and a half a day of the name brand to just switch over to RYO tobacco and not have a problem with the taste. I did an experiment by taking out the tobacco from my name brand and putting it in a premier light filter and let me tell you it tasted like crap. I then used the name brand filter and put RYO tobacco in it and tried that. That too tasted like crap. I think all the chemicals from their filters and and in the tobacco give it a good taste. Give GH a try if you like the typical American smoke.

I bought a pound of Golden Harvest Menthol light and I can't smoke the crap. It has a nasty aftertaste, and when you open the bag and take a whiff, it nearly burns my eyes out of their sockets, and the smell is almost reminiscent of formaldehyde.

I wouldn't smoke that stuff if someone gave it to me.

Incidentally, I still have much of that bag left in my fridge, and I've only used a few ounces. I bought it about 4-6 weeks ago and anyone who wants to pay shipping can have it for free.

If you like an ultra light (easier on the lungs) cigarette that still has a good strong (with a touch of Turkish tobacco) taste, try golden harvest ultra light. The brand of tubes you choose will make a difference, so try a few to see what works best to suit your personal taste.

Serves as a very good everyday tobacco, or as a base for mixing with other brands. I've tried golden harvest light but it is a bit harder on the lungs. As for stems and other plant product often found in cheaper tobacco, golden harvest is very good. There is some amount of stem but less than many other brands that are comparable in price. Try to get fresh bags that are moist, they taste the best.

I switched to golden harvest after smoking bugler mild or top mild (with bugler or top tubes) for about 4 years. Sometime around 2002-2003 the quality of both types of tobacco went down and there was all kinds of stem and re-constituted tobacco. The changing of brands was easy, golden harvest is cheaper and better.

On a side note, having lived on both sides of the border (born in canada). Cigarette taxes in canada are about $75 (USA) on a pound of roll your own tobacco in canada. Total cost for 1 lb of tobacco is about $100 (USA, 2007). In comparison, they are giving away roll your own tobacco in the states (about $10-$30 for 1 lb). Remember when a pack of camels cost 35 cents a pack in the 70's.

In 2007, the cost of pre-rolled cigarettes in the states is almost the same price as in canada. However, roll your own tobacco in the states is still at near 1970's prices. How long do you think it will be before a 1 pound bag of roll your own tobacco will be $20, then $30, then $50, then $100 (like it is in canada now).

If you are a serious smoker and like to roll your own smokes, stock up while you can on roll your own tobacco and tubes and seriously consider learning to grow your own tobacco. Smokers rights are being eroded everywhere and the price of lighting up is not going to go down soon.

A smoke shop in town carries GH as one of their main bulk brands. Their house brand is simply GH with their logo and name on the bags. I have been smoking GH for a while now. It's pretty good for the price. Although I wish lilbrown still carried H&R. But since they don't, I will stick with GH. GH is far better than the king mountain I got.

saw a 6oz bag of FF laying by itself in a shop tonight. Decided to try it. Interesting reading the different opinions here, so realizing there is no right or wrong, I just take a respective side. YUCK!!!! YUCK!!!
First tried in a twister tube...tasted to me like soap or something "funky" added to it. Next stuffed into a 100 tube hoping the extra filter might ease the pain...YUCK!!
I don't think I will bother using a cigarette sized tube, looks like this is headed for donation, along with an injector and box of tubes....thank god I only bought a 6oz.

My experience with "inexpensive" tobaccos has been very similar.

It seems that you get what you pay for in most cases. Although I did smoke Stokers for quite a while and even after I found higher quality tobaccos, I have found that making a carton for $11-$13 with D&R tobaccos is simply worth it compared to saving a little more money with the less expensive brands. Also, I like the blend I have now much better than any of the more expensive brands I have tried.

I guess it boils down to whether or not a smoker is looking for the ceapest smoke they can find or if they really want to enjoy the experience. Before I got out of the pre-mades I smoked a lot of "crap" cigs because they were much cheaper than the brand names.

Now, with the cost of quality tobacco allowing me to make sticks for the price above, I don't see any reason to smoke anything less than what I like.

Hi, my hubby and I ( after going 12 wks cold turkey trying to quit smoking ) bought a 6oz bag of " Golden Harvest Light" and we liked it a lot! ..we did smoke Marlboro Lights for many years, but with the price of them now, we just can't afford to keep buying them anymore...the only thing I can say is, if you buy this brand, try to pick out the moistest bag you can find, and only work with a little at a time when rolling . I keep a damp paper towel to moisten my fingers on when I roll too...this helps a lot. I also keep the bag of tobacco, and the ciggs. in the refrigerator to keep them moist. plus,it cost less than what we were smoking,so I think we'll continue to buy the Golden Harvest Light.. the main thing is it costs less for us to smoke now..

Well, I have been buying this from time to time in Full Flavor and Natural. Normally can be found for under $12/pound from smokers outlet on-line and a few other places. I like the flavor of this brand, Reminds me of Marlboro or Winston reds. The problem I am having is the amount of dust and shake in a 1 pound bag. I sifted out the bag of Natural thru an extra window screen onto a sheet of newspaper. Three CUPS of dust and shake (anything small enough to fall thru a window screen). This is from a freshly purchased bag that seems very fresh from the flavor. I thought this was excessive amount of tobacco to toss into the trash.
I emailed the company and Smoker's Outlet last week and have not had a reply from either. If I am going to throw away this much, I'm not saving any money at all. I think I will only buy this again if I find it locally and can see what condition the tobacco is in.
Once again, It is a good tasting tobacco, especially good for someone just coming over from premades. Or someone liking the "American flavor" tobaccos.

Re: Golden Harvest
Posted by Kerry on Monday, 06-Nov-2006

I don't think I would smoke GH if it was given to me free, but that isn't what I am writing about.

It is definitely possible that by mishandling and under-hydration the bags you have gotten are full of shake.

However, "sifting" tobacco creates a LOT of shake by the handling itself! I don't suggest "sifting" tobacco AT ALL! Of course, it would be better if you could purchase tobacco locally so you can check out the contents (if the packaging allows that) for shake.

In any case, dry tobacco is brittle. The more you handle tobacco, especially "dry" tobacco, the more shake you will have. If the packaging of the tobacco you choose allows it to become dry, then you must take great care to re-hydrate it before you ever handle or manipulate it. Also, the ambient humidity in which you handle the tobacco is VERY important. If you are working in a very arid environment, the tobacco will dry much faster, very much faster than you think.

I won't go into all the ways you can hydrate tobacco, but I will stress once again that dry tobacco will break and crush easily and create shake. Especially tobaccos that have little or no casings (the purpose of casing is to help maintain moisture, among other things).

I'll say it again, MANY syo enthusiasts don't pay enough attention to proper hydration when it comes to storage, blending and actually stuffing sticks.

First of all, The air in my house is fairly humid. We run a humidifier constantly for the sake of the newborn, who was born at 1 pound, 11 ounces with under developed lungs. But the tobacco had a visible amount of dust in the bottom of the bag. and excess. the tobacco itself was a little on the moist side. At this point, i think i will buy GH locally. I checked out the local store and their bags has a minimal of dust in the bottom of the bag.

Re: Golden Harvest

I routinely sift the extra fine dust from the tobacco I purchase...carefully and only after rehydration if required. Those fine particles can be quite damaging to the underside of the cutter on a Supermatic and TOM, and generally make the act of stuffing much more difficult than it needs to be.

You did the right thing...I've contacted (or attempted to, anyway) every company whose product I purchased seemed to have an excess of shake. I don't particularly care why it occurs--the bottom line is, as you mention, the person paying for the thing expects quality. If enough people would do this, perhaps the message might finally get across.

I picked up a bag of GH Ultra Light today from the local store. I needed a break from the high nicotine content tobaccos. bought locally, shake and dust were almost nonexistent. this tastes really good in a Vera Cruz Nocturne, and makes a good "lightener" for my stronger tobaccos.

Re: Golden Harvest

This GH ultra light is very, very mild. Even in a Vera Cruz Full Flavor tube. Actually not bad at all. smooth taste, no burn or harshness at all.
I have been mixing it 1 to 1 with both Penhooker and with Venguer. It knocks down the strength somewhat to make it better for me to tolerate. I've been smoking these straight for a while and been getting headaches from all the nicotine.
Mixing the GH in doesn't seem to alter the flavor much, if anything, makes it a bit better.

I added a small bag of the Golden Harvest Menthol to my last Lil' Brown order last week. It has got to be the most vile stuff I've tried. Very little menthol taste, in fact very little taste at all, other than a very odd aftertaste. It was real dry and powdery as well. Maybe I got a bad bag. This is a huge step down in quality from D & R's Wingate or McClintock Menthol. Perhaps the regular blend is better, but I would advise the menthol folks out there to stay clear of this one.

Regrettably, I bought a pound of the Golden Harvest Menthol Light. I injected them in Premier menthol tubes, and Gambler regular tubes and both had a nasty after taste. The GH Menthol light was stronger then full flavor Gambler Menthol, at least that's how it seemed to me.

Interestingly enough though, when I blended the GH menthol light with Top regular light, at a 1:1 ratio, it all but eliminated the after taste.

It seems to me that tobacco is like cooking spices. Too much of any given spice is unpleasant to the palette, but in the right combinations, it can be very pleasing.

I won't smoke this stuff unblended, but I'm stuck with a pound, so I might as well make the best of it...

Either I got a bad bag or all these people work for the manufacturer, because this stuff is not good. I've been smoking a bag of light and it is unpleasant, slightly bitter tasting. Seems to be a mostly burley mix, of all the inexpensive tobaccos I much prefer H&R so far. I have some full flavor that I haven't tried yet and I sincerely hope it is better than the light.

Don't be so quick to call all the positive posts bogus. Companies change their blends over time and as someone who still uses the GH Full Flavor as a blend component I have yet to come across a bad bag. Certainly not saying no one else has. Maybe the company is changing the make-up of their blends for the worse? Until I get a bad bag or two I will keep using it.

Hey, I'd be glad to mail out some small samples. I've got plenty left. I like to try stuff over a period to get a good feel for it, so I've been working on bags of the full flavor, light and ultra-light. I ordered it from lilbrown.

I've been trying to smoke all three varieties but I've given up, they're just that bad. They have this awful aftertaste, bitter and dirty like. Hard to describe, but not pleasant. I've tried plenty of tobaccos I didn't like but this stuff is the worst I've tried in years.

If anyone would like to trade a couple of grams worth of tobacco I'd be willing. Let me know at irishguyincc at yahoo dot com. I'd love to sample something I've never tried, and I have plenty of Harvest to go around.

Of the 25 or so tobaccos I've tried; the Golden Harvest All-Natural is my daily smoke. Always fresh and although it has many stems and quite a bit of shake it is a consistently satisfying smoke. Takes about an hour to dry out of the bag and stuffs very well on the Premier Supermatic. I'm still in search of that perfect tobacco that you only know it when you smoke it. In the meantime I'd suggest trying this to any RYO smoker.

I forgot my smokes so I went to the smoke shop and picked up a half OZ of golden harvest and some papers. Even hand rolled unfiltered it was quite smooth. It seems to be a tad harsher injected into a Premier full flavor tube. My guess is its due to the fact that you generaly have more tobacco in a tube than a hand roll. This might be better in a light tube. I would say this is an OK brand for stuffing, better suited for hand rolling. As far as it tasting like a marb, I haven't had one of those in ages.... so I can't compare. I think I will stick with H&R regular as my main smoke
