Blending with Bourbon.
Posted by Matt on Thursday, 16-Feb-2006

I really don't have enough patience to figure all of it out. Wound up buying a bottle of Wild Turkey and 100% went down the gullet. I reckon I'll just accept my limitations.

Blending with bourbon or other liquors...
Posted by Matt on Saturday, 11-Feb-2006

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with adding bourbon or any other liquors in a custom blend. I'm thinking I should add bourbon with a spray mister, but don't know if I should add a whiskey with a high proof like Knob Creek, or something 80 proof. It seems if I were to spray it on and seal it for a little while, the alcohol might allow the other flavors to penetrate more deeply into the leaf. On the other hand, if I were to air it out from the beginning, would the alcohol dehydrate the tobacco to a point I would need to rehydrate the whole batch or would the alcohol free remnants mean even more drying out? As far as the tobacco, I think a burley like Two Timer would be great, a straight Virginia, and possibly a good Canadian like Penhooker. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because wasting good whiskey & tobacco at the same time would be a shame.

I recently tried flavoring with bourbon and think I got a great result. I used Five Brothers, which is 100% burley. I emptied one foil pouch into a bowl and separated it pretty well. I added one tablespoon of my favorite bourbon (Bulleit) and mixed it well until it was all damp. I put it back into the foil pouch to marinate overnight, then dried it out in an open bowl. I mixed it half and half with Ramback Balkan and think I achieved a very nice smoke. The added flavor of the bourbon is subtle but very definite, and does not take away from the tobacco taste. I like these a lot.

vanillarisation
Posted by cruzion on Saturday, 05-Mar-2005

If you like a vanilla taste to your smokes, get a tupperware container, or similar TIGHT lidded container, put some tobacco in, but leave space in 1 corner. in that corner, put a teaspoon of Cooks vanilla powder. Leave alone for a day or 2. give it a smoke? is i vanilla enough? if not, leave for another day or 2.once it tastes right, scoop the powder out. You will find that sometimes the powder absorbs moisture from the tobacco. In that case, get a cotton ball, piece of sponge, folded paper towel, and dampen it, and put that in the corner. it will give the moisture back. Turn the tobacco over once the top half is softer. dont put damp cotton AND powder in it at the same time. I find i like a vanilla edge added to stronger tasting, smokey tobaccos, like a halfzware, or mixes with Gaulioses in. experiment.

Flavoring question
Posted by Josh on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2005

Anyone know how to add chocolate flavor to your smokes? I looked at:

http://www.thetobaccoshop.com/oils.htm

and they don't have any flavored oil for chocolate. I like Camel Dark Mint and want to replicate the taste of those.

Thanks,
JK

Thank you! I just ordered a couple of their flavors. Now if I could just find bubble gum and some more fruit flavors (esp. lemon/lime) I would be all set.

You may have a hard time finding bubble gum. I was reading today where one of the major cig companies was forced to stop producing bubble gum flavored cigarettes. The government viewed bubble gum and heavily sugared flavors as targeting children.

Yes, I read the same thing.

The only way I could think would be to get a bunch of gum, stick it in the bag with the tobacco, and leave it sit a couple days.

One time my ex-gf left a smoke in a candy dish... she smoked it the next day and it tasted like Banana Runts. I must say it tasted pretty good.

D&R's Rowland has a chocolate flavor added. Mixed with a menthol tube may give you the desired effect.

I used Godiva chocolate liqueur and mixed it in with some good smoke,(Turkish Import), and sealed up the baggie for a few weeks. Then, I opened the baggie and spread out the smoke and let it dry to proper consistency. Tasty, since the Godiva chocolate liqueur is also slightly sweet. Just don't overdo it.
I also do this with Captain Morgan's Rum and other alcoholic treats, sometimes with some added sugar and mixed together til dissolved. This method smoothed out some harsh smoke that I didn't like at all, but didn't want to send back. I was pleasantly surprised. You might be as well...:)
Cheers

I want to flavor my own tobacco
Posted by Tom on Thursday, 07-Oct-2004

I tried some fruit punch tobacco in a hookah last summer and I really liked it. I became interested in finding a cheap, easy way to flavor my own tobacco at home. Can anyone help me with a procedure? (It would be for hookah purposes only)

Randy's Tobacco Shop has flavored oils to spray on tobacco for flavor. Haven't tried it and it seems expensive. Here's the link:

unfortunately, Randy's shop doesn't carry the oils anymore.

"The manufacturer and distributor of these flavoring oils has went out of business due to the hurricane Katrina. These will not be available in the future. Sorry."

I look foward to your comments on your success or lack of in growing/curing your own.

Please keep us posted! I think I really haven't tried growing/curing tobacco because I haven't had enough reliable info and I live in an apartment, which means I would have to grow in a container(s).

Thanks!

I'm kinda looking forward to it. I already have the kiln built and tested and the greenhouse should be finished in a week or so. I live in Florida so the conditions should be good without a greenhouse, but I was thinking it would be easier to control pests and bugs with one. Hopefully come August or September I can be taste testing. :-0

However....you should be aware that these enhancers and flavorings use a base of Glycolene, an ingredient commonly found in pesticides and disinfectants. I've tried all four of the enhancers and a couple of the flavorings, I wasn't impressed enough to re-order any of them.

The enhancers are typically used for tobacco one has grown oneself that hasn't been subjected to other "enhancements" or flavourings.

I ordered some vanilla top note flavouring and found it to be quite nice; I can't speak for the other top note flavours, however, because I haven't tried them all.

Wazmo,

Thanks for the link. I ordered some menthol - not here yet. I'm trying to elinimate the McC Menthol from my blend because it's not Light. I know the instructions say to mist the tobacco, but I read somewhere about mentholation where it is done in much the same way meats are smoked - ie. in a menthol 'environment' not applied directly. Do you have any info on that?

I'm afraid I wouldn't have a clue...I've never been a menthol buff, but certainly there must be some info on Google about it someplace.

I've googled it. Very little info. There some stuff people have submitted for patents and one 'confidential' paper from Phillip Morris - probably confiscated during the big trial a while back. I'll just experiment :-)

Actually Waz, I emailed Mark a week ago and asked him the same question. His response was a mix of D&R blends and he didn't address the mentholation question at all. I was a bit surprised.

That's surprising. I've asked him far more esoteric stuff than that in the past and received excellent replies. I'd be inclined to believe they apply the menthol right to the tobacco with the other enhancers and flavourings...but if you ever find out for sure, let us know. :-)

Re: www.thetobaccoshop.com/oils

The philip morris paper seemed to be discussing alternative methods of mentholation - adding it to the paper and to the filters. I can't recall where I read where they used a process similar to 'smoking' meats. It was early on in my MYO experience - perhaps RYO mag, but couldn't find any reference there either. I'll let you know if I find something. Right now my plan is to try a few things - direct spraying and perhaps a 'fuming' by locating the tobacco in a container with menthol present, and my original idea, separating menthol tobacco with a screen from the tobacco I want to mentholate - mainly Rowland Light to see if the menthol will be enough to flavor. I don't like strong menthol, so that may be enough.

Re: www.thetobaccoshop.com/oils

Wazmo,

Some preliminary results. YMMV according to taste buds, but I found that spraying directly on the tobacco (waiting 24 hours as suggested) gave an 'off' taste. I did a pack and each cig had that off taste. Don't know if it's the Glycolene (humectrant/catalyst) or the Menthol - a bitter taste.

Just exposing Rowland Light to McC menthol without blending them - ie in a 11"x7"x7" tupperware container with a good seal, I have the McC Menthol on the bottom, Rowland Light on top separated by a screen. Result - not enough menthol imparted onto the Rowland. Also have a sponge that is enclosed in something I fixed up on the lid for moisture.

Filled a shot glass half full with the menthol from seedman and added that to the above setup Rowland Lt. and McC Light on top of McC menthol. This gets a lighter smoke (since it's not blended with McC FF Menthol), and yet has enough menthol to complete the taste for my buds. For people that want strong menthol, this wouldn't be enough. But I have some 'non-menthol' friends that like this better than straight Rowland Light - they say it brings out the flavor more.

I've yet to try the 'fuming' with the menthol without the McC Menthol below.....

A few weeks ago I bought the DVD from that site, as I definitely want to get into GYO (once I'm no longer a NYC apartment dweller).

It's well worth it. Nice step-by-step hobbyist grower notes, from seed to cig -- and the third section is instructions by a master cigar maker on how to roll a cigar. Fascinating. :-)

Re: Custom Blends
Posted by Jennifer on Wednesday, 07-Jul-2004

Here are some thoughts about custom blends. For my taste the butterfly was WAY to strong. But it does have an interesting flavor. Here is what I would like to try

Light tobacco 80%
butterfly light 10%
ground clove.

That wouldn't be an every day smoke. But it would be nice to have something a little differant once in a while. As far as the light tobacco in the belend goes, I haven't tried enough light tobaccos to decide what would be good. It would also be interesting to try that blend in a menthol tube.

I have also thought of "marinading" tobacco in liquid containing differant flavors and then putting it in my food deyhdrator to dry out. Not sure if this would work. Any thoughts? I might try just soaking the tobacco in some espresso. Not sure if coffee flavored tobacco would be good, but I did try some coffee flavored Shisha (hookah tobacco) that wasn't too bad.

On the subject of menthols. You might try mixing in some dry mint leaves into the tobacco, rather than using menthol tobacco.

Re: Custom Blends
Posted by Rick on Sunday, 18-Jul-2004

I was just wondering if Jennifer had tried the marinating method and whether the results were smokable if she has. I would imagine the best way to impart the coffee flavor to the tobacco would be to spray mist it not too much and let it dry naturally. I intend to use this method to perk up the tobacco I have saved from the bottom of my rolling tray. Believe I will try to spritz it with some Bacardi and let it mellow for a week or so and give it a whirl. Will let you guys know how it turns out.
