What's a good virginia tobacco?

Posted by Keith on Friday, 14-Sep-2007
I'm looking for a good tasting virginia tobacco. I've tried the sagamore and it's pretty good most times, but there are times that it's not so good when I get it. Is there any that is of consistently good quality?

Windsail by D&R and Blend #1 & #2 by Custom Blends are good. I like blend #1 best of all so far, but it is more expensive. I like the plain Windsail more than the platinum Windsail. I have found out that I like the taste better if the tobacco is a little dry, but some on here like the taste better when it has more moisture. Heat +moisture = steamy to me:-) You just have to try it different ways to see what you like.

I order ten packages of Windsail at a time. You get a price reduction, plus shipping is then 10%, plus you don't have to order but a few times a year. I buy the Windsail carton of tubes 50 at a time for a reduction in price and add that onto a tobacco order. It keeps the price of the tobacco, tubes and shipping down.

They let me mix the different Windsails at the reduced price for ordering 10. I have only done that one time, so I could see which ones I like the best. I don't know if they would let us do that more than once.

If you like Custom Blends #1 and #2 you really should try Tobacco Stations American mild and premium mild. I thought they were very similar but A LOT cheaper. The American has burley in it but the premium does not. I haven't tried it yet but I'm going to add some D&R two timer burley to the premium and see how it turns out.

Since McClintock Virgina isn't being sold any more I would suggest D&R's new Roland Gold, it's pretty close to the MCV. I also think Danish Export isn't too bad. Windsail Platinum for me is smokable but it just doesn't grab me, it's ok but you know, no big deal. Sagamore Virgina, in my experience has always been a little harsh and not something I'd want to order again.

I would recommend Windsail Platinum. I use it straight or in blends. The only time I have noticed anything like harshness; it's because I've let it dry out too much! Simply re-hydrating the tobacco with a small piece of sponge dampened with Distilled Water will fix it. If you order from D&R S&H for orders over $100, Standard shipping is 10% of the subtotal, and 20% for Priority. I generally order 3 bags at a time, and I can't remember ever paying over $13 shipping. My shipments have always arrived in a timely manner and in perfect shape.

Unless you have a P.O. box or live in one of the states that D&R only ships to by priority mail. I broke their shipping rates down but the site wouldn't let me post it because it appeared to be too repetitive or looked like spam. If your order is $25.01 or a little above and you live in one of the states that they only ship priority they charge a whopping 44% shipping. Their cheapest rate was 17.4% and that was for a $75.00 order, all others up to a $100.00 order were above 20%.

I believe UPS won't deliver to those states, which is why it's more expensive to ship there. Something having to do with getting an adult signature for tobacco products I believe. The people in those states can thank their legislators for that added expense, and remember them on election day! Capt. Mike

I live in one of those states and get UPS shipments from RYO cigarettes all the time and almost everybody else ships priority for a flat rate of $7.95. I doesn't have anything to do with any legistation, that's just an excuse. It's a left handed way of increasing the price and trying to hide it in excessive shipping charges.

Live in Montana because there is no sales tax, work in Wyoming because there is no state income tax. The best of both worlds, just like getting a 20% raise. I don't buy from D&R specifically because of their shipping charges.

I just got a package from D&R. The shipping charges were $38.20. Wanna know what it would cost me to ship it back to them, just for grins?

Interesting; UPS policy is not to ship tobacco products to Montana unless the recipient is a licensed dealer with credentials on file with the Department of Revenue. [link] .

I wonder why they're breaking their own policy (which is based upon Montana law) for one company but not another?

I don't know, maybe "tobacco products" is like "no chemical additives". I've probably ordered from every SYO vendor on the net and I've NEVER had to prove my identity or age to anyone; USPS, UPS, FEDEX or anyone else to receive a package.

I pay 10% on orders over 100 dollars to D&R. I don't get priority, which is faster, I use the ups and it comes here in good shape within a week, sometimes sooner.

I try to order a week or two before I think I will need them.

Dash,

I just put in an order to D & R,right at $60, shipping was $9, 15 % so it's an extra $ 1.05 over $ 7.95 flat rate at other online retailers, for me it's worth the little extra.

Danish export, or if you don't mind paying 20% shipping Windsail platinum.
