finding myself a good smoke

Posted by Jake on Friday, 13-Jul-2007
I have to admit that I am some what of a "new" ryo/myo smoker but I cant seem to find something that is ... just right. Thus far I have tried a number of things and was hoping that you may be able to point me into a better direction.

As far as some tastes go to help base this from I have had and my opinions stand:
packaged - I general dislike most manufactured smokes
Marlboro - any type to me seems to taste very I guess dirty would be the best way to describe it.
Camels - what i would normally smoke Turkish golds or the #9 menthols have a good smooth smoke most of the full flavors seem very processed to me though

ryo/myo tobaccos - these are a world better...for the most part
bugler - is terrible
zigzag - is tolerable but a bit to harsh
PS Turkish - is so far my favorite
PS Amsterdam - is to strong
PS danish - is what my wife smokes and is a good smoke but seems to lack the tastes that I want
Bali light halfzware - also just tolerable
Bali Turkish - is good but I cant buy a decent amount of it

My assumption is that just like manufactured the cheaper is of slightly less quality. The price is not really a concern so long as I'm not paying more than $60-$70 per pound.
I just want a good smoke that I can really enjoy. Something smooth, flavorful, with a pleasant aroma for the people around me.

My hope is really just that some one might be able to give me a brand or a link to something that seems like it may be up my ally.

I switched to RYO from smoking Marlboro Reds years ago. I went through all the usual suspects in your local tobacco shop. I made McClintock Virginia my smoke of choice until they stopped making it.

Now I'm waiting on D&R's Roland Gold which is supposed to be the replacement for McVirginia. As an aside, I think D&R should name it something else, like D&R Golden Virginia or some such because their Roland Line is so opposite of what McVirginia was that I fail to see how they could put the Roland name on it.

Anyway, I've found a few smokes that I like, but a month or so later put them aside because they didn't stand the everyday test of time for me. Windsail Platinum, Roland Light, Ramback Balkan are all pretty good but became too tiresome after a month or so be my main smoke.

So, as it stands, if D&R's new McV replacement doesn't live up to the hype, it will be S.J. Rimboche as my everyday. I think the S.J. is an excellent premium tobacco that holds up well over time, especially in a Rizla Red or Zig Zag FF tube.

Did you try Cockstrong or Vengeur? i am a former Marlboro smoker, I have not tried a whole lot of good tobacco yet, but those two are amazing to me. i think I like the burley in the blend, I hated Winstons, according to RYO mag they are/were straight Virginia. good luck finding an everyday smoke.

It sounds like you want a mild but tasty cigarette. I have been looking for the same thing for over a year and here is what I have found in the order of taste.

House Blend #1 at Custom Blends is my favorite so far, but it is expensive.

Usually, I like D&R's gold WindSail brand except it isn‘t as tasty as the House blend #1 by Custom Blends.. I didn't like WindSail the last time though. I tasted something in it that was too strong and it made me feel congested and caused me to cough. Platinum Windsail was worse.

RYOTobacco.com has house brands with two tiers of tobacco pricing.   I have tried the Sagamore Virginia of the cheaper line. I like the GOLD they sell the best, but haven't tried many of them.

I have ordered all the mild samples that they sell at Custom Blends. I will check back as I learn more as I try them. You may like a stronger cigarette than I do, but there is always a stronger one on down the lists of all of them.

Usually the golden Virginia tobacco is the mildest.

Trying the samples is always the best way to go until you find the one you want.

I would be interested in what you decide you like the best after you have shopped around.

I meant to say that D&R sell Windsail and everyone likes their products.   They are good people to order from and easy to deal with. They have various tobaccos that run different prices.   One bad order is not bad as many times as I have ordered from them.

As another poster said, higher price doesn't always mean better quality. Taste is highly subjective, and only you can decide what works for you. You could try what I did and order the 1 ounce samples from American Thrust, or D&R has their sample kits with 3.5 ounce cups of tobacco in several different blends. I think most folks would say that you just have to play around until you find what you like. Experimenting is loads of fun anyway.

Well the assumption of price to quality sometimes can be right it isnt always.

I too tried many different tobaccos and shags and our daily smoke is premium full flavor from Tobacco Station. It is about 18.00 per pound and 8.00 for a 6 oz. and I would equate it to a camel.

I also like to make a few DRUM every week just to stimulate the palette.

No one can tell you what to smoke, but you might try some of the SYO Premium blends and try to find just what your looking for.

You can also try American thrust they have 1.00 samples and you can get all 13 or 14 I think they have. I did order from them and got just about all their shag samples and they were fun to experiment with, but in the long run what I smoke the most of is the Tobacco Station Premium Full Flavor. Just a good smooth smoke for me.
