McClintock Challenge

Posted by Matt on Monday, 25-Jun-2007

Bought 4 packs of Rollit papers and a can of McClintock FF. Gonna see if I can get the suggested 400 cigarette yield as advertised on the can.

I've been rolling my cigarettes at a 2/3 diameter of a regular smoke and I'm optimistic that I'll be able to get to 400 and more. Only about 3 packs into it and they haven't caused much damage with about an inch or so of a dent in the can.

The claim of "Makes 400 Cigarettes" is accompanied by a picture of couple of filtered smokes. Have any of you been able to stuff 2 cartons from a can of McClintock?

You should make 400 easy with your rolling criteria. Last tin of McClintock FF I bought, I believe I got about 350 MYOs with a bit of non-stuffable shake left over which I hand rolled. Don't recall how many I got from that....

With the Top O Matic, I was getting about 340 to 350 tubes. With the Electric, I'm getting about 380 to 385. The only reason I can think why I'm getting more with the electric, is that I let the tobacco dry out for a day before stuffing (which I didn't do with the top o matic). It's seems like the tobacco expands some as it drys.

I got 493 smokes. I stuffed about 40 of them and hand-rolled the rest. The ones I rolled were only about the diameter of a Virginia Slim.

Where it says on the can "Makes 400 Cigarettes" there is an asterisk I didn't notice at first.

"*Actual number of cigarettes may vary depending on smoker preference." ...And how!

AHA! This could be why my sticks are overstuffed, then! I make a bunch and the next day they're hard as rocks. Obviously the moisture keeps it more condensed. With the absence of the moisture, the tobacco has no choice but to expand. Hmmmmmm........ I do like the Bugler (blue) now, BTW.

Bebop's TOM made smokes simply had a bit more tobacco in them. All vegetative matter _shrinks_ when it dries, when water is removed from its cells. The moist/expand, dry/shrink aspect of tobacco is an insignificant non-issue.

Tobacco with the proper moisture content is springy, compress it and it will spring back. We want that kind of expansion. Tobacco that is too dry will crunch/collapse. Tobacco that is too moist is hard to stuff and doesn't burn as well/has less flavor. If your sticks are overstuffed/hard as rocks, you're using too much tobacco. The most common mistake is to use too much, and/or overly moist, tobacco.
