spell checker
Posted by scott johnson on Saturday, 03-Mar-2007

Dave,
Thanks for incorporating the spell checker into this forum. I think more forum operators should have something like this. It has kept me from making some serious errors in my posts, so far.

Ever since I switched to an internet provider where I actually pay to be here, it has disabled the spell checker on this forum (the ONLY good one I've encountered.)

Liked the new posts only better than the new format on 'what's new'. Some of the new posts listed in the new topic section aren't listed under the "new posts" section.

Re: What's New
Posted by Warren on Sunday, 18-Feb-2007

I think that instead of bunched up threaded and post based, the viewable list should be selectable via link at the top (and at the bottom, so user doesn't need to go back to the top of the page to change the view).

The post based view would show the latest posts, the way it used to. The thread based view would show latest threads, similar to the new threaded view. The thread order might have at the top either the thread created most recently or the thread with the most recent post added (whatever is easier to implement). Right now the two views are bunched up on one page and the lists don't seem to be complete or consistently updated.

Another convenience would be to allow paging back through the list (of either type), beyond the current pageful. That info is already available for all practical purposes through the areas links on the left, hence this feature isn't that vital. The two user selectable views described above would be more useful.

New Topics and all replies to those topics are in the first section only. Replies to recent and old topics (i.e. everything else) are in the second. Both cover the last few days. As new topics 'expire' the reply lines are tossed and the topic moved to Recent topics.

A bonifide Quick Roller Section.

I don't think the comments about "Big Machine's" was directed at you. It was mostly comments from one person who had a bad experience with a Supermatic and decided it wasn't for him. However, there are many using this site who have found the Supermatic (and like machines) to be much better than handhelds.

As for the QR, because of your reviews and comments, among others, I agree that it deserves a dedicated forum. Keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I have done my best to give an in depth, honest review of this machine. To do that requires regular feed back on my experiences with this new wonder. I can make Unfiltered sticks to boot. The one drawback is the QR doesn't like moist tobacco, and I have to let my Look Out Milde Shag sit in the hopper for 20 minutes or so; which isn't a problem! However, I still enjoy the overly moist L O M S now and then, and my Topomatic will not be retired anytime soon. I personally feel the QR is a viable, reliable means to make your own. Mike

They haven't made a machine (any type) that isn't sensitive to moist tobacco. That is why I "harp" so much about paying special attention to ambient humidity and proper storage/humidity of tobacco. It really isn't that hard, but it is really easy to let tobacco get either too dry or too humid depending on the season and storage method.

Kerry, I have been; out of necessity vigilant about RH. Here in Northern Ohio, it's either too dry in the Winter months, or too damp during the Summer. Having good, quality, storage containers is the key to success. Getting the tobacco to the right RH for the machine used, and keeping it there is an on--going process. I use the Lock & Lock plastic containers with good results; with the help of my Caliber 3. It is a task that requires patience, but the reward is a great smoke. Mike

Happy New Year And Thanks!
Posted by Captain U-96 aka Mike on Sunday, 31-Dec-2006

First off I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and express my gratitude to Dave Lers for this site! When you've been making your own smokes as long as I have--you fall into a pattern of tobaccos bought that are available to you. I've been blending Top, and Bugler, and Zig Zag and the others I could get locally for many years. Then, one day I decided to do a search for Turkish Tobacco. Before this; it never occurred to me to look on the Internet for tobacco! My search turned up RYO Magazine, and this site. Since then, a whole new world of tobacco experiences has made smoking a new and more pleasurable experience for me. I now can get tobaccos more suited to my taste, and blend as more of a hobby than a necessity as before! This site is like the World Bank of Tobacco Knowledge--free of comercialism, and for that thanks again Dave Lers! This site combined with knowledge avialable in RYO Magazine is exempliary to say the least. It's great that new people to the craft can have a much easier apprenticeship than I did back in the early 90's! In closing, I hope 07 brings more good news than bad, and that we as entrepreneur's can find a common ground to stand against the anti's and their protagonists! Truly, Mike Tomlin Sr.

Well still being a newbie to all this, This is the first site I found when I first started to look into SYO. I just couldn't believe all the information here, not just tobacco's and tubes, but on the machines as well. I kinda knew what tobacco's to avoid and what probably would be pretty good, and what problems i would probably have with the machines and best of all how to fix it. I just can't say enough how helpful this site was for my transition. Thanks to Dave and everybody that contributes and Happy Holidays to all.

Getting Started section
Posted by Warren on Monday, 18-Dec-2006

It would be convenient to have a brief SYO orientation section for visitors without any knowledge about SYO at all. There is too much detail here for a novice to know what they need to get started, how it works, what are the benefits, in few words and pictures (maybe even links to videos from RYO Mag & Custom Blends). A simple "Getting Started" section, visible at the top level section hiearchy, would be a handy place to send someone to.

Something that helps _complete_ novices get oriented, such as basic few setups a,b,c, with brief pro/con/$$ for each, and what equipment and expandible supplies they would need in each path. I know we don't cover rolling in here, but for completeness (I think most of us have rolling option as a backup) at least they could be sent off to some RYO mag articles on rolling. Links to videos would then flesh out the story.

I would love to write it when I get a bit of time, although I am not sure my English is good enough (it is chronologically my fifth language, learned when I was almost twenty, after Serbo-Croatian, Italian, Russian & Latin). It might work perhaps after some editing of a draft by a native speaker.

NOTE: A strange thing has been happening lately whenever I add a reply to the posts -- the "Subject" field is always initialized to "Re: Nicotine reduction" and I have to edit it manually to match the thread I am replying to.

Quote "NOTE: A strange thing has been happening lately whenever I add a reply to the posts -- the "Subject" field is always initialized to "Re: Nicotine reduction" and I have to edit it manually to match the thread I am replying to."

This could be due to "form auto-complete" in Internet explorer. I use Opera and when I reply those fields are highlighted. If i hit the auto-complete icon, it dumps "Excel modification" into the subject field. You might have to remove the cookies for this website and/or turn off auto-complete.

Although I use Mozilla, that tip was helpful. I looked with the packet grabber the http exchange and the site never sent the wrong Subject field. It was the browser filling the wrong stuff in. So I turned off the form autofill feature and that fixed the problem. Thanks.

Re: Getting Started section
Posted by Dave L on Tuesday, 02-Jan-2007

There's a reason there's a spell checker (for me :). If there was something that would help with my grammar, that would be here as well. I wouldn't have guessed that English wasn't your first language. Unlike some English as a first language folks, I don't have to work at understanding what you are saying.

With the forums my policy is to only shorten ([snipped]) or delete posts and its pretty rare that I do either. I'm not sure what's going to happen with topic posts (basic editing is almost ready) but I'm reserving the right to be a bit more hands on with those.

"Re: Nicotine reduction" is probably the first time you used a password on this site (when I first tried implementing them about six months ago). I though it was a clever setup but it sounds like some browsers (not my Firefox or Konqueror) are saving Subject with Password. Can you 'view/delete saved passwords'? It may be inconvenient but if you have an option of clearing private data (including passwords) you could do that and then 'preview' a post with just Name and Password filled in.

Post number
Posted by Warren on Saturday, 16-Dec-2006

It would be convenient if the posts would display the post number, so one could easily create URL for an external link to the post without having to look at the html source of the page. The easiest for use (via copy & paste) would be the hyperlink to the top line of the post, but even just a visible ASCII post number would be fine.

Re: Post number
Posted by Kerry on Saturday, 16-Dec-2006

It works, but lets say you haven't read this forum in a while and you want to read every message posted since your last visit?

Even if you open a new window or tab for each entry on the What's New page, you will be reloading the same material over and over again. As I said in another post, this isn't a problem for broadband users, but for dial-up users it is.

Caching doesn't help as each time a new message is referenced via the What's New page still has to reload all the data from all the messages in that "forum" to get to the particular topic/title clicked on in What's New.

It gets old. I don't think I am the only one here on dial-up, but I could be wrong. Hopefully I will be able to upgrade to a computer that isn't a dinasaur and get broadband, but for now dial-up is it. I just hate having to download the same data over and over again to see a message that might have only been a little way down on the page on my last load. With all that said, I will still be here even if nothing changes.

Re: Post number

When your mouse is over 'reply' the last part of the URL is the post number (which you can attach to the page URL with #)... Would [reply|link|new], as in 'reply to this' and 'link to this', work?

The server delivers pages (foo.html), the browser handles the internal links (foo.html#n). It doesn't matter if the link is to foo.html#1 or foo.html#100. If the browser has a current version of foo.html in the cache, that's what it should use. I suspect that lag (and possibly other) issues are due to pages being too big.

Its not a forum script per se and without pagination things are only going to get worse. I'm only a weekend coder and while there are a lot of things I'd like to do with the script, I just don't have the time. It may be that moving the general forums to phpBB is the way to go.

Yes, I found that out while discussing with Kerry. While back I linked to some posts here from other newsgroups and I picked the number out of the source, which was a drag.

> Would [reply|link|new], as in 'reply to this' and
> 'link to this', work?

That would work great. Then one can just click right button on the link, select "Copy Link Location" from the menu and the URL is on the clipboard to be pasted elsewhere.

To avoid expanding html size too much, the short relative URLs for the |link| field will be fine as well i.e. just insert #<number> e.g. <A href="#44">|link|</A> for your post and that would expand hyperlink |link| via browser into the full URL: http:// syo.dalrun.com/About/258.html#44.

Re: Post number

> hmmm. can't you just use the web address?

That gets you only to either the top of the html page containing dozens of posts, or to a specific post to which you came first via the link from the front page (hence not easy to find later, especially if it is gone from the front).

For example, how do you create a link to my previous post above, once it is gone from the front page list (or if there is a longer list of post links on the front page, all with the same titles and the same author). Or, in a longer discussion you may be reading, how do you create a link (as a reference to point a reader to) to a specific post that you see several posts above?

If there were a link/visible tag on each post, you could just copy the link from that tag as a reference, without going back to the front page, trying to locate its corresponding front page link (which may be gone already from the "What's New" list, which seems to go 1 month back).

Re: Post number
Posted by Kerry on Saturday, 16-Dec-2006

I'll have to admit, given my previous "dittos" to this format, that being able to go "directly" to a given post would be a positive change in the format. That is, some forums are rather large and I use dial-up. Having to reload 100 to 200k over and over again gets old. I guess it isn't much of a problem if you have broadband, but I am poor and can't afford it. Maybe that should be the new "standard" for "poor"? If you can afford broadband, you aren't poor or are being supported by the gov.? LOL! Just a thought...

Along with that, if possible, I would like to be able to subscribe to a list by which I would receive a copy of each post via email. Some sites have the capability of having "replies only" forwarded via email, but I like having the capability of getting ALL message via email. I do this for the users of my own web forum.

Just a thought. I also know how hard it can be to implement and manage such an arrangement.

Thanks for the site and consideration Dave.

Same thing goes for at least one version of Explorer. My browsers of choice (Konqueror and Firefox) work fine so I wasn't motivated to look into it until now.

Apparently not all browsers are validating their caches against page last-modified dates. I've hopefully set things up to force browsers to validate (and only reload the page if its newer than the browsers cached page). Let me know if it does/doesn't fix things.

Suggestion for Forum Format
Posted by JeepBoyNY on Thursday, 02-Nov-2006

This is a great forum and I've learned quite a bit of stuff here, but in my opinion, it is VERY HARD to navigate thru. I would like to suggest putting the forum on php based software such as Vbulletin or something similar. It seems like that is what most forums are set up like these days, and to me, and probably most everyone else they are very easy to navigate thru, and easy to search as well for information that's already posted. By the looks, it's $160 to buy it, and you get free updates for a year and can continue to use it indefinitely. What's everyone else think? I wouldn't mind bucking up a few ponies for a membership or something if that would help on improvements :)   Smoke on!!!

If you want to try "hard to navigate" go to D&R's page. I'd love to see it changed & from their point of view it would seem there are too many opportunities for second thoughts from the customer. If you want to remove something from your cart you have to put 0 in the quantity field and it won't recalculate without that item appearing with a 0. If you want it gone from your cart completely you have to start all over again.

I'm afraid I don't agree about the hard to navigate statement. The links and subnav links to the left couldn't be clearer, and you've got a breadcrumb trail at the top. Even the subsections are laid out logically and consistently. Granted, there is a wealth of information to go through here, which is why, after you've got a semi-good feel for the place, the "What's New" link is invaluable. It's the first thing I click on here....

You can search this site using google. For example to search for burley on this site only you enter into google:

site:syo.dalrun.com burley

and it will list 35 pages on this site containing string "burley".

Otherwise, the site is quite streamlined, quicker than any of the php based discussion boards, including vbulletin. The organization is logical and clean, navigation simple and self-evident. I wouldn't change anything.

Re: Suggestion for Forum Format
Posted by Dave L on Thursday, 16-Nov-2006

I think his main point was usability. This site was designed as a content site with all topics open to user input. The 'forums' are a hack that got out of hand. Some of the forums have way too many topics on a single page. I'm working on ways to allow more user input (e.g. 'submit a topic' on the bottom of the tobacco forums). A traditional forum is also a possibility (phpBB is open source, free and easy to setup).

Like I said above I would like to see a phpBB type of forum, just for looks. I have also tryed some nice java servlet type of forums, but they are not easy to setup. In any case, this site is great and it is the first place I go to when I have a question. Thank you.

Happy Anniversary SYO website
Posted by Tim Aydt on Thursday, 05-Oct-2006

Last week was the third anniversary of this website. Although I don't post as often as I used to, I still visit frequently and still SYO. I am always amazed at how much this site has grown in three years and at the dedication and work that Dave has put into it.

So, I ask that everyone give Dave a big thank you for allowing us to use up his bandwidth and for making the most comphrensive SYO site on the web.

Thanks, Dave!!!!!!!!!

This is the best and most useful site for smokers on the web. Posters are polite and helpful. It is also visitor friendly, clean and logical web design. Great job Dave!

I remember posting my noob questions in the December after the site came up. I probably would have never gotten the hang of SYO without this site. It's hard to believe I've been doing SYO for almost 3 years. But I sure don't miss that first hand injector, cheap tubes and old bag of RailRoad tobacco!

Oh yes, this is the very best place to find out more about making your own smokes. If not the only. This place makes you feel like you're with family and good friends. I would agree that people are helpful and courteous. I've learned a great deal and I know there is a lot more to learn. What would we do without this site. I check out; What's New almost every day. Dave, thank you very much

I know how much trouble running an open forum can be and I appreciate all your efforts and delicate editing/deleting of messages that should not have been posted. (My apologies to Kent C. for a comment I made that was rightfully and thankfully deleted)

I also operate an open forum (7 years) on a totally different subject and I know how important user input is. However, having someone who is dedicated and willing to put in the time and effort to keep things organized, comfortable and clean is essential for creating and keep a "community" like this one operating smoothly.

Kudos Dave!

Thanks again for the site and all your time and effort!

Thanks Dave for all of your hard work and dedication and bandwidth. I know I've gotten a lot of good, useful information here, and I've been an RYO-MYO crafter since 1991-92; when I gave the Camels a heave ho! New people to the RYO-MYO craft can come here, and receive good advice, or just read if they are uncomfortable with posting and asking questions. I believe this site is a vehicle that will positively advance ryo-myo to those who haven't made the move from tailor mades yet, because of a lack of knowledge of tobacco and/or how easily quality smokes can be made at home. After all; I believe our way of enjoying tobacco is better!
               Thanks again Dave!

Thanks for all the fish.

i think having our own profile or something like it. in it we could describe what we smoke, used to smoke and stuff like that, that way every one would know where our opinion comes from. when we see what someone has wrote about a tobacco we could just look at there profile and compare our tastes. not sure if it a good idea, but just a thought.

by the way great site, this is the best site Ive found. Ive sent two or three people here and they've switched from Marlboro's to myo, saved me alot of explaining lol.

A section on anti-tobacco news
Posted by Warren on Friday, 21-Jul-2006

It would be nice to have such section in SYO forum, since that is probably what prompted most of us to join SYO.

I just read an article on "Scientific fraud is routine at the FDA" ( [link] ) which, sheds some light on the "science" behind the Surgeon General's recent anti-smoker hate speech as well as on the agenda ($$$) behind the increasing tyranny and extortion of smokers.

The old tobacco forum got so big I had to start thinking/doing something about the forums. I'm on my second try and am not going to make any other forum changes till I've got a working solution there.

If the current setup there works out, I'll create Forum categories including SYO : Forums. I would prefer a more general topic name, something that wasn't a negative, something simple like Politics. Suggestions welcome.

How about Political Activity. Then you could allow users to post by State.

It would be good to be able to find state specific posts...I've browsed a couple of the forums and tried to categorize the related posts.

Politics or Anti-Tobacco or Political Activity or ?
   Smokers Rights
      Illinois
   Smoking Bans
      Arkansas
      St. Louis County MO

Smoking Banned in Arkansas!
Posted by Summer on Thursday, 27-Apr-2006

Arkansas Republican Governor Huckabee and his mighty minions have passed a bill banning smoking on the premises at work and in public places. They did this without public debate. They also banned smoking in the car. If it was even in the papers before hand I didn't read it.

Governor Huckabee plans on running for president on his health crusade. I thought the rest of you smokers would want to know how fast it can happen in a state.

17 states have banned smoking.

It is odd to me how the republicans don't want any rules or regulations on prices of things like gas but love to pile rules and regulations on the average Jo.

Here is a link to a story about it.

Posted by Bob D on Tuesday, 25-Apr-2006

Just found this site 7 days ago , I had no idea there were cigarette injectors and all this stuff available to make "real cigarettes" I always thought homemade cigarettes where made with rolling papers only.
After reading and researching information on this site I got a quick education!!
Bought a Premier Excel and some Zig Zag light tubes and a bunch of pouches of tobacco the next day.
Im crankin out Bali Shag Light / Zig Zag tube cigarettes like a pro......and they are fantastic!!! Taste is 200% better than any store bought cigarette and much much cheaper. I dont know why but I actually smoke less of these homemade butts than the prefabs . Another interesting thing is that my morning smokers cough is gone!
Heres my novice tip : Bali Shag works great in an injector after drying an hour or two . (my first couple of butts packed too tight when the tobacco was moist).
I will never buy another pack of store brand cigarettes again...Thanks!

Just wanted to say thank for the site! For me, it is the only site for syo. RYO mag was my intro to syo, but your site is he only real-time site that is active and readily available to "all" types of browsers. In my case, that is very important. I also operate a web site with a message board. I may email you to ask whether or not this message board script is available or at least to find out how much maintenance it requires.

In any case, thanks again! Without you, I guess I would have to start my own syo site! (grin)

Kerry

P.S.

Sorry for not posting my email address, but I think you can understand why I don't...

Two Year Anniversary---Thanks Dave!!!!!!!!!

I guess I never realized it's only been two years. I found the site 21 months ago and assumed it had existed for awhile. Thanks Dave! Without the info I've found here, I wouldn't have switched to SYO. Or I might be using a $2 injector and stuffing the dried out weeds they sell in the local smoke shop ;)

Re: Machines
Posted by Warren on Sunday, 18-Sep-2005

It may useful to regroup parts of the general discussion on the machines into separate brands. Excel is one candidate for its section. Then the new Top-o-Matic, which I think, despite the few flaws, is already a more efficient injector than SP, should have a section of its own (you could seed that section by moving its review & discussion from the general section).

The ToM has been my main machine since it arrived and except for the initial alcohol cleanup & lubrication, no other maintance was needed. Before the ToM, when I wanted to make just one stick (to try some tobacco), I would use a hand roller instead of SP. I didn't want to risk having to open it to remove the gunk, so the hand roller was a quicker and simpler way. Now, I make single or few sticks with ToM. Removal the rubber pad (which I had to do since the ToM's original one was made of some very stinky rubber) leaves any leftover tobacco dust in the tray under the machine and no action is needed to scrape the blade or clean the chamber. After cranking a stick or two, I just put the tray back on the shelf and it's ready to go.

Re: Machines
Posted by Dave L on Monday, 19-Sep-2005

Well Premier is currently _the_ brand and the machines do have a lot in common. I toyed with a lot of things, separating out the Excel, putting the Top-O-Matic in with the Premier, etc. I tried to keep it simple and based divisions on current content. If the content and popularity of the topics in The Rest (the only name I could come up with that was alphabetically after Premier) grow, they could merit subcategories or even a Premier level category.

...Dropping Premier and going with Supermatic (include the Top-O-Matic and maybe the MackRoller there) and Excel (include the Privileg there?) has possibilities. I cannot see deepening the tree by creating another level under Premier (same reason I dropped the Crank/Electric/Handheld idea, too many levels).

This category is still bugging me. I'd like to see the Supermatics and Top-O-Matic in the same category because mods, tuning, etc. apply to both.

Excel
Supermatics (Matics?)
   Supermatic
      Vintage
   Supermatic II
   Top-O-Matic
   Using
      Modifications
      Servicing
      Tuning

Re: About----To the owner of this site
Posted by Hoss on Saturday, 14-May-2005

Dave, Hats off to you!!, since I stumbled onto this site many months ago I have gained enough knowledge from it, and the comments from other users, to create a carton and 1/2 of excellent cigarettes in about 3 hours, at a cost of $14.00 or .98 cents a pack. Beats the hell out of the $6.50 a pack marlboro reds I used to smoke. My favorite blend is (1/3 McClintock Virginia, 1/3 Single Stick full flavor, and 1/3 Vengeur)in a Premier King tube. Your site has been a benefit to me and my wallet, Thanks for creating it.
