Excel vs. Super

Posted by Ebenezer on Wednesday, 06-Jun-2007
I have used the Excel with no problems for 2+ years. I am considering buying a new machine. The Excel is working fine, would buy another, but I want to try anohter machine to test ease of use. Should I? I enjoy your knowledge on SYO. (I stuff D&R Cockstrong, Vengeur light, Windsail Platinum, Two Timer, and Penhooker Light-in order of use) With Rizla FF, El Ray L, Ramback Prestige Tubes. With my Excel there is skill needed making a 'full' Rizla(old machine?), makes perfect El Ray and Ramback tubes. Excel is awkward to hold and use of tobacco needs a tray(haha). Is a Super better?

You wrote"Excel is awkward to hold"
Try this, instead of putting your fingers in the handle hole.
Just lay your hand over the top of the machine thumb on one side, little finger on the other, kind of like palming a basketball, then sort of twist the machine clockwise as you pull on the handle.I find this works much better and is   actually less awkard then holding on to the Supermatic.

I really don't think the Supermatic is better. If the Excel works for you I don't think there is much of reason to "upgrade" to Supermatic. Unless you're looking to make 100's or shorts.
I used an Excel for about three years with no problems except the return spring breaking. I smoke about a 1 1/2 packs a day.
I finally got a Supermatic a couple months ago. The Supermatic worked real well for a while till the release nut loosend and got out of whack. I messed around with it for at least an hour trying to get it set right and it's still messed up. Maybe I'am just nechanically disabled but I'm back to using the Excel. I will try adjustin the Supermatic again but .......
One thing I will do if I get it adjusted right is to mark that release cam some how so next time it goes out of whack I'll know exactly where to set it.

yes the time release is tricky but lucky for me I figured it out quickly and I wish you were here so I could just do it for you
it basically boils down to getting nothing on the 1oo's setting (I like the idea of no metal on metal collision), and then getting a bump on the king-size setting, which I ONLY NEED for making Rizla cig-size, and even then I don't have to have it, it's just a luxury....
anyone owning an Ultimatic would be well advised to instantly replace the release nuts with Arbro ones...you'll be going from 7/32 to 1/4......the 7/32 doesn't cut it at all....also, you can rip the time release straight off and still have a great machine.....with an empty slot

if it were me, and it was, I'd go for the more handsome metal machine
it's also eye candy
never used excel, but from reading the forum I'd conclude that a metal machine is, in fact, better
you can use your excel for travel, seems to be the popular choice

I think you'd be much happier with a Supermatic. I have an Excel and it's the machine I use the least. (I do like to use it with Bugler tubes.) When I use my Excel it's usually because I'm being lazy about tuning up the Supermatic for whatever reason.)

Well I have had my Super for awhile and got an excel last month for a backup and now I use the excel more than the super.

First off my super is all metal ( hasnt been upgraded yet) and will jam if the tobacco gets too fine and I mean if the cut isnt burley or bigger it can jam. The excel will stuff down to absolute dust and probably would stuff that as well.

Now I dont routinely make shake cigarettes. But I do like being able to use tobacco that with the super I would have to dump (which is pieces of tobacco that is between 1/8" and 1/2" long) with that the super will jam and the excel will not.

just my 2 cents worth
