Base plate

Base plateA simple piece of 1/4" board, used in conjunction with the Rubber Mat Alternative, holds the machine solidly in place. After bench-testing with screws I mounted it with double-sided tape on my cigarette making cart. I tried another setup without the rubber edging, this stays put better and has a quieter/nicer feel. This mods only drawback is that it makes cleanup a bit of a hassle.

That's nice, I want one.
Where did you get the tray? At a Staples or somewhere like that?

I picked it up at a place called Magic Mart. It's made by Eldon Workspace.

I'm sure Walmart, K-mart, Staples, Office max, etc. would have something like this. I have less that $10 in everything.

tray   $5.99
feet   $1.00/ 4pk
Epoxy $1.49

I now wish I would have bought a square dowel instead of round. and maybe 3/4" size instead of 1". That would have made it a little easier for cleaning. I might make another one in a day or 2.

say Scott, have I passed the hoops enough to be curious about your own age?? you got my emails, either way, my
point of this post....I can't see a Supermatic with any other finish (paint job) having the air of distiction to blend in (with the tray)
and remember...prototypes always have some bugs that are 20/20 in hindsight

I'm 35.

I'm thinking of trying to find some paint to match so I can repaint my Supermatic. It's got some age to it and a lot of missing paint. Maybe a visit to the hobby shop or the auto paint section at NAPA is in order. I've also thought about changing the color to a black handle with chrome knob and paint the body in Corvette Stingray Red .

I was looking at the website for the comany who makes the tray, rolodex is the parent company, I wish I could have got the mahogany finish tray instead.

A tray like this could be painted any color. Maybe a silver or blue metallic to match the Blue Supermatic. Or it could be sanded and stained with any wood color. I might look around here for something cool.

Now that I have the ideas, I could get in Dad's wood shop and make something like this out of walnut, wild cherry, or cedar. (Now that my finger is healed, I'm able to do stuff like this again, LOL)

I have a machine like that around here someplace! The H-Linkage and cutter are missing etc, but is in fair shape. Mike/ Capt.

I'd like to try out a new one, just to see how much difference there is between them in smoothness of action.

Also, what kind of feet did you use? Did you make them or buy something from the store?

I used some square rubber feet, about 1.5" x 1.5", that are for setting furniture on to protect floors. Found them in the hardware section.

when I made mention of a guy on ebay selling trays that made PS's and Topomatics one handed, I figured it was cheesy...
that guy apparently only had use of one arm, but was making it out to be something everybody might want

The problem was that I was motivated by curiosity, not need. If I didn't have a hopper tray I wouldn't be wondering if the mod was worth the extra cleanup hassle. For folks using a stock machine, or even one with the crank plate flipped, its not so much about one handed operation as it is about getting the machine to stand still... I edited out my 'no left hand, so what' line.

To try another adjustable cutter in a Supermatic II I had to remove my Supermatic base plate. I missed it for a little bit but I got used to not having it pretty quick and ease of cleanup won.

Re: Base plate

my supermatic didn't have a base on it when i received it. I set it on one of those woven rubberized placemats from the dollar store. it doesn't move around and allows the dust to fall all the the way thru to the table. cleanup is over with a quick wipe.

Base plate

What a great site this is! I have been lurking for about a month and have learned a lot here.

I was in my work shop about to do either a recessed route or a base plate like yours, when something that was much simpler came to me. I just cut 4 pieces of wood 1/4" tall x 3/8" wide, 2 at 4 1/2" long & 2 at 6 3/8" long. I then double face taped the 3/8" side of the sticks. Then I positioned my Supermatic on my tray where I wanted it and pressed the sticks in place. It can be seen here,

[link]

I have my handle in the original position and since most of the force is sideways I put the longer sticks on the sides, if you have moved your handle to the alternate position you might want to put the longer stick at the top and bottom.
I didn't enclose the whole area so as to ease in clean up, it is easier to scrape the scraps through the openings.

Hope this helps,
Barry
