Peter Stokkebye

Manufacturer of pipe and cigarette tobacco. Founded in 1882 in Odense Denmark. Villiger Stokkebye International (link above) appears to be the US arm of Villiger (Switzerland) and Stokkebye (Denmark). Villiger Stokkebye is the US distributor for Stokkebye's Peter Stokkebye brand. Commonwealth now owns and distributes the Bali and McClintock brands.

I don't think RYO Mag has it's facts straight. On the link that you posted you'll notice that RYO Mag mentions that McClintock went to Commonwealth Tobacco. (which is true) RYO also insinuates that Commonwealth dropped McClintock Virginia because it was a premium priced tobacco.

My understanding from conversations with Commonwealth is that Commonwealth wanted to obtain the Mc Virginia but Stokkebye wouldn't included it in the deal much to their chagrin.

Also if you read Dougs pages he gives off the impression (well at least it's the impression that I formed) that Peter Stokkebye Inc. was some kind of cutting edge company devoted to RYO. In fact Stokkebye was a pipe tobacco company who just happened to have a hand full of RYO blends. Actually Stokkebye was a subsidary of the Orlic Tobacco Company which touts itself as Europe's 2'nd largest pipe tobacco company.

And to further muddy the waters, at the time that page in the link was written, Stokkebye was already acquired by or in the process of being acquired by Villiges Tobacco to form what is now known as Villiges-Stokkebye Tobacco. If you look at the Villiges-Stokkebye website, Villiges credits itself with introducing Stokkebye's 'London Export' tobacco, which has been around for some time.

So my conclusion is, that Peter Stokkebye may have had an interest in making fine RYO tobacco, but with his passing all that has come to a screeching halt. Stokkebye tobacco was 'never' an ryo company, they were a pipe tobacco company that offered 4 or 5 ryo blends, they have been absorbed by Villiges (a major European cigar company) and RYO is something that they just aren't interested in.

I'm in the NYC area and Stokkebye brands are getting harder to find. In 5 years I doubt you'll even be able to find it here.

FWICT, the only changes are in US distribution. Peter Stokkebye Intl (US) is now Villiger Stokkebye Intl (US). Villiger-Stokkebye is now the US distributor for Villiger (Switzerland) and Stokkebye (Denmark) brands. Commonwealth Brands is the new US distributor for Stokkebye's Bali and McClintock brands.

Peter Stokkebye Tobaksfabrik (Denmark) is a 100% owned subsidiary of Orlic Tobacco Company which in turn is a 50% owned subsidiary of the Scandinavian Tobacco Company.

Interesting article about Stokkebye joining up Commonwealth Brands (cig mfg) to be their distributor of Bali and McClintock. In theory, the availability may increase in retailers that may now carry just Top or Buglar.

Why they created a link with this long of name, I'll never know.
