Windy City Cigars (was RYO Cigarette)

Mar '15: Now Windy City Cigars (ryocigarette.com and qwaaq.com are gone)
The retail arm of Inter-Continental Trading USA, Inc. (OHM tobacco, Shargio tubes, etc.)
RYO Cigarette (AKA FairPrice Tobacco Inc., Qwaaq, etc.) has a reasonable selection and some good prices, especially on tubes. I've been buying my tubes from them since '04. They can be an unprofessional outfit with lousy service and communication (no reply to emails, messed up orders with slow/no resolution, damage due to poor packaging, slow to ship, no order confirmation/tracking). While they have added order confirmation email, its optional and off by default... fixed. When checked the automated communication, confirmation and UPS tracking, works well. With the exception of missing freebies (lighters and ashtray), my '06 and '07 orders were fine. My '09 order was problem free... as was '19... and '20. Shipping is free if order is >= $200... now $14 flat rate.

I understand that mistakes can happen, but how a company deals with those mistakes is important to most consumers.

I recently placed an order with this company for 8 items. When I received a box from them, it only contained 1 of the 8 items. There was no packing slip in the box and the UPS label indicated it was box 1 of 1.

It took several calls to various numbers to get a human on the phone. None of the calls where I'd left information were returned.
When I spoke to someone about the problem, they told me they would file a claim for me. I didn't receive any more information so I followed up with a fax, explaining the problem.

A couple of days later, I received an email from the company showing the tracking information that my order had been delivered. I responded to that email and told them that I had explained the problem and sent a fax. Yes, I DID get a box, but that box contained only 1 of 8 items paid for.
They responded to say it was being investigated. That was several days ago and I haven't heard anything more from them.

What is there to investigate?
UPS did deliver the box they shipped. Whoever filled the order screwed up.
Obviously, I'm getting the run around from them instead of making things right.

I would NOT recommend this company. They have not responded to my last communication wanting to know when I can expect either my merchandise or a refund.

I made an order from this website and received a call a few days later from Shrujal Patel, the Website Owner. He advised they no longer carry the product I ordered and asked if I wanted a replacement product or would like to cancel the order - I asked that he cancel the order.

About a month later I received the replacement product and my credit card was charged. As the website does not state their return policy I emailed Mr Patel as to their return policy. He responded that if I ship the product back, he would credit my account.

I shipped the product back, at my expense, and emailed the shipping documents to Mr Patel, asking that he reimburse me for the returned product and the return shipping charge, as the order was canceled with him a month prior to it being shipped to me.

Assuming he was a man of his word and this was a responsible company, I waited for the credit to my credit card. When my credit card bill came in with no credit, I emailed Mr Patel advising him that the credit had not been issued. He responded - he would look into it. Again feeling I could trust him, I waited. The next bill came with no credit.

I emailed Mr Patel the proof that he had signed for the returned product and that I expected a credit. He again said - he would look into it, and that he was again carrying the product I originally ordered. I responded that I would accept the prodcut that I ordered as payment for what he owes me.

After six months of emails, phone calls, and waiting - I have not received a credit to my credit card, a check in the mail, or any product, and Mr Patel has now stopped responding to my emails or returning/accepting my phone calls. So - I wish to advise anyone who chooses to do business with RYO Cigarette.Com, AKA Fairprice Tobacco, use caution, my transaction did nothing but cost me money.

Last month I ordered a dozen of those "Smoky" cig cases.....a dozen BLACK....about 3 days after I placed the order I get a call from some guy at FairPrice (noted on CallerID....) to call them re: my recent order.
Upon calling back I find they "only have like 4 or 5..." black cases....would I like their 12 "we-pick-um"? Errr....no, I prefer black...or at least all one color like brown or other neutral color....Oh, OK, he says, that'll be fine.
Order arrives about 5 days later....the cases are bouncing around in an unpadded, oversized box....oh....did I mention....they were the "we-pick-um" variety pack....pink, purple, teal....
Don't get me wrong....the cases are sturdy and are (somewhat) weather-resistant....but they went ahead and sent what I did NOT order...or what they said per the phone conversation -- they'd send a single base color....not a circus train!!
End of the day...the first....and LAST....order I'll be placing with FairPrice!

I recently made a purchase from RYO (Oct.31st) solely based on my past purchases from them which were EXCELLENT in all aspects.

But... on this particular order which I placed the morning of Oct. 31st, I did not get a UPS tracking number until Friday morning Nov.2nd which stated ONLY: "billing information has been received", scheduled delivery date is Mon. Nov. 5th.

As of Mon. evening I checked the UPS tracking number and it STILL showed:"only the billing info. had been received", so...I sent several e-mails (7of them I believe) to which I got a reply on the first e-mail saying: "we will check and get back with you soon". I waited until the next day...still nothing-no call/no email, so I sent another...the reply: "we will let you know by end of today". I waited until the next day and still no call/no email so I sent another (it's now Nov.8th) and UPS STILL shows "only billing info. received. Then on Friday I sent 2 more emails, and on Monday morning with STILL no reply to the last 3 emails I was getting fairly angry and sent yet another email "DEMANDING" that someone do something to which I got a reply Tues. afternoon saying:

"ok we found order and we are soory about the delay your order was droped form the plate an we found it now and we will ship you ASAP.

thank you
RYO

I checked the UPS tracking this morning Nov.14th and it should be here Thursday evening! (15 days from purchase to delivery), but I got my charge card bill yesterday Nov.13th and it was charged on OCT.31st.

As I said in the beginning...previous orders were EXCELLENT, great packing, great prices and fast delivery. I hope this was just a one time goof up but the manner in which no one bothered to check on it until I got angry kind of bothers me...not very professional.

I will stll give them another chance because "things"do happen!

If anyone at RYO reads this...PLEASE---sharpen up your customer service skills.

Sincerely,
Curt

I was interested to find I wasn't the only person who has been ripped off by FairPrice Tobacco... talk about a misnomer! I paid for a 13 oz McClintock Menthol can on 10-5-07. I got a 6 oz can on 10-14-07. I've made a long-distance call, sent repeated emails, and as of 11-4-07 I haven't received a credit OR the shorted tobacco. So I'm glad to see you have a warning up. My first few orders were fine, except some of the tubes were smashed. But getting less than half the tobacco I paid for - then getting ignored and blown off - really irks me. Buyer beware!

Last Friday, I placed my order with this company for 6 pounds of Rave ultralight, along with two of the Smokey cigarette cases. The order shipped on Monday and arrived today, on Wednesday. The order was correct. There was no packing peanuts, instead the pound packages of the tobacco were laid flat in the box. They threw a free lighter in as well. I am pleased, particularly with the speed of shipping, and will order again.

Are you all talking about this company in Austin Texas?

[link]

If so I must say I've ordered from them over time for the last 5 or 6 years. I have never had a bad experience. They have been helpful on the phone and their orders have never taken more than 3 days to reach me up here in NY.

I will say this however. Their website is a pain in the ass and has on occasion failed to work. It's failure was obvious. I concluded a long time ago (not only for their web site but for everybody's website) that I only order by first looking at the site and then calling the 800 number to actually make the order.

I've never had a bad experience with this company and they have been generous and helpful. (but I only order by phone).

No, RYO Cigarette and RYO Tobacco are two (very) different entities. I orded from RYO Cig once two years ago, never got the order and it took 6 weeks to get a refund. RYO Tobacco, however, has always been golden as far as I'm concerned.

I've been wondering the same thing. Anybody ever try FairPrice branded Tobacco? It is only $8.99 for 26 ounces (yes, that 26 not 16).

RYO Cigeratte also has Smoker's Gold tube at bargain prices.

Thanks in advance.

Smoker's Gold RYO Tobacco was a RYOC/FairPrice trademark (abandoned in April). Earlier this year, they stopped selling Smokers Gold tobacco and started selling FairPrice tobacco. It _might_ be the same, made in Thailand, tobacco... and/or like their newer ('06) Cutlass tobacco (which isn't on their site).

The only thing I can say about the tobacco is that you won't find an equivalent tobacco for less (5.53LB!!). If you are happy with tobacco costing twice as much, it might be worth a try. Personally, I already have too many aged :-) cheap tobaccos. The Smokers Gold tubes are the lowest price I've seen on (St Vincent made) tubes... and it would be interesting to see how their Royale-Matic ($23) stacks up.

Thanks, Dave. Ordered the FairPrice tobacco and received it today. The good news is that I like it. The bad news is that it's no longer listed on their website. The 26 ounces came in two plain zip lock backs, 13 ounces each. It has a subtle fragrance that slightly reminds me of Long Life cigarettes sold in Taiwan. Seems smoke-able even in full flavor tubes. I like it better than King Mountain & Golden Harvest. Also got Smokers Gold tubes and some Smoky cases (love em).

I was surprised and dissapointed to not see it on their website. I know they said last call but I thought they meant last call at $8.99 for 26 oz. Not last call for availability. I've been blending it two parts of it with one part Sagamore Virginia and one part D&R Two Timer, which makes it about $40.00 for 80 some oz. of pretty good tobacco.

Well thought it over, I had already ordered it one evening about 10:00 pm, next day got my tracking email and received my McClintock large can and P.S. Turkish very well packaged, good sized box, new Styrofoam peanuts protecting all around. 2 days time from their store to Tennessee. Seems like maybe they have improved, even small glass ashtray included.

I ordered 4 cans of Lookout Mild Shag on the 30th of Nov., I called on Dec. 2, and was told they just got the order On the 1st., and that they are only working on a weekend because of the Holidays. No e-mail from U.P.S.! I was told that I should have my order by Friday. We'll see. I am a bit consoled though, because when I asked about my order--the guy I was talking to put his hand over the phone and yelled " anybody seen *****'s order? We'll see. Mike

Customer service and packing can be terrible. The only reason I order from them - they have the best prices on Arango Sportsman Vanilla. I'll order ten cans at a time but sometimes they've packed it so tight, a can will bend and blow the seal. It's common for them to take 2 or 3 business days to ship an order. My last order was in a sturdy box but no packing so the cans shipped okay.

Yesterday, 10 Dec., I got the tracking e-mail from U.P.S. stating that Shargio Patel requested it; stating my package had an expected delivery date of Dec.13th. Never got the phone call from Shargio Patel though. The worker who gave me the tracking number told me they are extremely busy; which is evident being they are working Saturdays and Sundays. Now, all I can hope for is that nobody stomped my 4 cans of LookOut Mild Shag to get them to fit in the box! Mike

Send RYO an email asking why it hasn't been picked up by UPS. It will ship that day once they realize it was never shipped. But don't expect a reply to your email. I've had this happen twice.

My order from LBSS made on Dec. 7th. will also arrive on the 14th; making 10 cans of Look Out MS. I had sent an e-mail to them yesterday, and Serjho answered it today. I've never had this much hassle getting a simple order, and I've ordered from many on--line merchants. Beware of this company! I have ordered them for quite a while, and have watched things steadily go downhill. they do not actually buy boxes or packing materials, so the exterior box can arrive damaged, as my last one did, crushing most of the tubes in the process. But what really takes the cake, is that they stopped all communications. They used to send email confirmations of the tracking number...no longer. Per them, "We no longer do that". My last order was charged to my cc on 9/26. It is now 10/8. I have written twice, the last on 10/5...still no response.
BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE. Great prices...if you get the product. Horrible service.

I agree. My second order will be my last. I ordered 9/26 and received a slightly damaged (surprisingly little considering the packing) and messed up order on 10/7. I figured a simple order would be fine, 6 cans McClintock Virginia (one of those rare instances when it was cheaper than Lil' Brown) and 25 boxes of tubes, but they sent the wrong tubes. A phone call got me someone hard to understand (English as a second language) who, instead of taking care of it on the spot, said he'd call me back. I followed up with an email and I'll give it a few days to see if anything comes of either.

I did order from them again recently and this time the box was sturdy and they used packing peanuts. So they're not consistent on packing but not a problem if your just ordering tobacco. On a side note, I received another email on Saturday about their specials. These are quotes:

"Spermatic II machine $34.99 each"

Just an update. Since they do have the best price on Arango Sportsman Vanilla, I placed an order last Monday for 7 cans since you really can't mess up an easy order. Never received a shipping notice until Saturday and UPS delivered on Tuesday (8 days). The box was sturdy and they used peanuts. But, the 7 cans wouldn't fit in the box so they forced them. Two cans have the top and foil seal blown so they're dry and will need re-hydrating.

I didn't bother emailing since they don't reply but Yahoo will send me a review link shortly.

Update: After three emails without response, I finally sent an email on Thursday morning, 10/13, threatening complaints with the FTC and Illinois AG, along with the links to the complaint forms. Surprise, surprise, I received a call that afternoon, telling me that the McClintock Virginia tobacco and tubes were "no longer being made", and asking what I would like to do. The caller expressed surprise that I had written three previous times, and agreed to refund on the spot, 19 days after my order. Must have been a coincidence that I threatened them. ;) Btw, someone should inform McClintock and Lil Brown that the products are no longer being made, since I received a package from them that very morning, three days after placing my order! Hmm, guess they are my new supplier, since they can produce miracles. :)

Just received a package from them, six cans of NAS tobacco, six pouches of Gauloises and a single box of Excel filterless tubes (this was just one for the test, in case of bad packaging mentioned above). Everything was packaged fine with popcorn filling the voids, no damage noticed to anything. They even included a free disposable lighter. Also, the day after the order I got an email from them with UPS tracking number link for the order, so they must have restored that service.

For members here who use Excel filterless tubes, you may have noticed that they come in two widths, with no indication on the box whether it is a narrower or a wider kind. From some places I get the narrow kind, from others the wider kind. I prefer the wider ones (easier to mount on the Top-o-Matic nozzle and give stronger smoke). These guys seem to stock the wider kind, so having verified that they now package and ship tube boxes properly, I will be ordering more Excel tubes from here.

I have never had any experience with RYO Cigarette, so I cant comment on them, but from what I have read there not consistent in their practices.

On the other hand I have dealt with RYO Tobacco, and they are one of my preferred dealers. Along with D&R I think they both sell premium tobacco. Also their customer relations are second to none.

They have the best prices if you like to order tubes and tobacco from the same place. I think they have as good a selection as any retailer out there and will take the time to talk to you on the phone about their products. They give out a lot of various freebies with your order as well.

I order my tobacco/tubes in bulk about twice a year from this place. I generally order about 80 total items each time and there has been one mistake in each of my orders(four). One phone call is all it took to correct the errors (one wrong box of tubes, one missing bag of filters, one OOS can of tobacco, ONE damaged box of tubes).

It's been a few months but I now only order tobacco. Their shipping boxes are thin and I've received multiple boxes with holes in them. Packing material consists of a few wads of newspaper so any tubes are usually partially crunched. While I'm not an English major, I feel uneasy of a website and newsletters with constant misspelled words. Items that are hard to damage such as bulk tobacco seem to be okay.

I recieved my first order from RYO Cigarette today. Possibly I just got lucky but I ordered some tobacco and tubes and nothing was damaged. The packing was sort of odd, with a stacked "structure" of tube boxes, tobacco in between and the whole thing kept together by styrofoam peanuts packed into the empty spaces. It looked like it took a while to do and I gather they aren't always so careful (or artistic)but the prices on tubes and the fact they're about eighty miles away make it certain I'll order more from them. I do wish they'd send an email confirmation, I prefer a bit more contact with an online merchant but all in all I'm pleased.

Re: RYO Cigarette update

I guess I spoke too soon, last Sunday (exactly one week ago) I placed an order with RYOCigarette. I didn't freak when I didn't hear from them I was expecting that but here it is a week later and they've charged my credit card and I have yet to recieve a UPS notification or, needless to say, my order. If something is back ordered I suppose I can deal with them not notifying me, I don't like it but I knew going in they were bad for that but I really don't like them charging me before they actually are ready to ship my order. I guess tomorrow I'll give them a call on my dime and try to find out what's going on but in the future I think it may be worth it to pay a bit more for my tubes and not have to deal with this.

I also spoke too soon. In the end I may find that I didn't save any money buying a half-case of tubes from RYOC. Of the six boxes I have used, one full box and half of another were totally trashed. In my case the distance (IL > WA) is probably a contributing factor (more tossing about by UPS).

Yesterday I recieved an email from RYO telling me my account has been credited $5.99 for a can of tobacco that was part of my order. I assume that means I won't be getting that tobacco, the letter could have been a bit more clear. And I have UPS notification tonight (Tuesday) that they have recieved the information about the shipment from RYO and I should expect delivery tomorrow. (RYO is about an hour and a half drive away from me)
So with a little luck I'll get my order nine days after placing it. We're planning on doing most of our shopping with D&R and Lil' Brown in the future.

Customer service needs improving. I've had the same experience. Sometimes they pack properly and sometimes not. I ordered a half case of tubes and other items a few months back, around six boxes had crushed tubes since everything was just loose in the box. My last order was packed properly but after I received the UPS request-to-ship notification, it sat at RYO for a few days until I emailed asking about it. Of course I didn't get a response from them but the package finally shipped that day. The last order showed a "free lighter" on the packing slip but I never found it. They've got the best price on Sportsman vanilla but everything else I've started ordering from other companies.

While I was at work today UPS deliverd the order, it was missing eight boxes of tubes even though they were paid for and on the invoice so my wife called RYO and they said they'd "get them out to us". We figure we're done with RYO Cigarette.

We did get the tubes the next day so I can't say I didn't get everything I paid for but it was enough of a hassle to turn me off RYOCigarette. I've been smoking D&R tobacco for a while now but my wife and daughter both like Mclintock. The good news is while waiting for her tobacco and tubes my wife tried some Penhooker again and decided after a pack or two she'd rather smoke that than her Mclintock so she'll be ordering from D&R as well. My daughter pays for her own and wants to stick with Mclintock but she's going to order from Lil Brown.

First and last time I order from these people. Ordered 1 can of Mynheer Halfzware Shag 200g Can Free 25G Pouch got the american blend . Also ordered Mac Baren 5.19oz Halfzware Shag and the american blend of same. The latter they got right. In my order was packed 1 massive tube of incense. This I did not order. The Mac Baren outer wraps were missing=seems like good tobacco but tastes like soap. These people do not answer e-mails,phone service just sucks. In short I would have come out better just setting my money on fire and watching it burn.

Arrrgh! They just dropped Stokers from their list. Seems every time you find a favorite base tobacco and a retailer that carries most things you like, they change. Maybe I should stock up on Arango before it's dropped.

I live 300 miles from them so shipping is always fast, check out my last order of Escort filter tubes; 1 case (50 boxes tubes) $69.50 + $7.00 shipping= $76.50 divided by 50
=$1.53 PER BOX OF 200 WITH SHIPPING!!!
I also order a lot from Lil brown smoke shack & some of D&R's blends & try to keep my own 'inventory' so a sudden law change OR a big price change does not have a large effect, once you get to know what you like I'll bet you just may find yourself doing the same.

Sorry guys but I'm not impressed. I placed an order on Thu (07/29) and they charged my credit card. Also received the UPS notification that the electronic notification was received.

The order didn't ship until tonight (08/02) so it won't arrive until Thu (08/05) which is an 8 day turnaround. I've emailed RYO but no response.

How 'bout those prices from ryocigarette.com? A little wait may be worth getting new fresh inventory that I've always received from them-they do a good business that means good product turnaround time.

The prices were good. Stoker's #2 was a little higher but the Premier tubes were cheaper. I do wish they'd change their packing. The don't use styrofoam peanuts so they packed 25 boxes of tubes to the edges of the shipping box, my tobacco went on top, then they added newspaper as packing material on top. Since there wasn't any packing between the tube boxes and the shipping box, I've got 6 boxes of tubes that are partially crushed. None are damaged beyond repair but it's a PIA to straighten the ends so they'll slide on the supermatic.

They do seem to be the only ones carrying Arango Sportsman Vanilla (Mac Baron). I like a little vanilla added from time to time. It's definitely better than the Lookout Vanilla pouches and without all the birds eye. I also picked up a pouch of Harvest Cherry for the wife but I'm craving vanilla right now.

I'll probably use RYO as a secondary source for tobacco only in the future but I do not recommend ordering any product which could be damaged due to the lack of packing.

To be fair to RYO, I placed another order for some Arango since they're the only ones that carry it. Placed the order Thu at 8am and received it the following Wed afternoon. This time they used a sturdy box and had packing peanuts. I still won't order tubes from RYO since you'll never know what they'll use for packing. I'm still straightening some tubes from the previous order.

If they would respond to any communications and be consistent on their packing, they would be my #1 source for everything.

None of the online retailers I have bought from have packed tubes with peanuts all around. Tubes that go through the mail are at risk. I also got a half case of tubes with tobacco/newspaper packed on top. The box was on the wimpy side but the tubes seem to have come through undamaged. My worst tube problem was when I was buying at the local Cigarettes Cheaper, I had to start checking every box because ~50% had damaged tubes. It'll be at least 6 months before I consider placing another order with RYOC (when my tube supply is low).

My first order of 25 boxes of tubes from them was very poorly packed. One box of tubes, which happened to be situated in the corner of the shipping box, was badly damaged, but I was able to use most of the tubes. The second and third orders came in sturdier boxes with newspaper on the top and some token peanuts scattered around. The tubes were intact. I'm good for tubes for the time being, having 51 boxes. That should hold me for awhile. ;-)

Bummer of an experience, no doubt. I've been pleased with them, but they do show a definite lack of professionalism: empty email messages, duplicate email messages, loads of grammar and spelling mistakes. I'm willing to tolerate most of this because, for the things I order, the price is right.

WOW! Fast shiping & some real good deals on tubes, watch them for some real good bulk prices once you've found what you like. As of 1-6-04 they had McClintock tubes at $1.00 a box & very good prices on my fav---- McClintock Virginia- $69.99 for 10 cans in fact ALL MCCLINTOCK 6 oz. tins at that price & standard shipping of $6.50.

Just ordered 10 cans of my fav- McClintock virginia & by the time I reached the check out page instead of the usual $6.99 per can I see the price inched up to $7.49 per 6 Oz. can, still a good price but just a hint it never hurts to stock up on a product we know we can store in a proper manner.
I noticed Peter Stockebye 'export' line were also a little higher, tubes look like they stayed the same- lets hope we can KEEP ordering online & keep the TAXERS at bay, Enjoy
