Increase in tobacco tax to pay for SCHIP
Posted on Monday, 08-Oct-2007
Update: Thankfully, the override failed (17 votes short).
The Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 (CHIP) is to be funded by an increase in tobacco taxes. The bill H.R.967 was passed, vetoed by Bush on Oct 3 and is now under threat of congressional override.
If the override succeeds, tobacco will cost a lot more. The federal excise tax on RYO tobacco would increase from $1.10 to $8.90 per pound
The RTDA/IPCPA has put up a form to make it easier for you to let your local representatives know what you think of this bill... Unfortunately most of the text options reflect the focus of their new name, i.e. cigars (and business owners). A good MYO/SYO/RYO centric paragraph would be most welcome.

The "Not So Poor" 12 Year Old Who Rebutted Bush on SCHIP Veto
Multiple, Baltimore Sun
Graeme Frost, who gave the democrat rebuttal to George Bush's reasons for vetoing the SCHIP Bill, is a middle school student at the exclusive$20,000 per year Park School in Baltimore, MD.

One has to wonder that if time and money can be found to remodel a home, send kids to exclusive private schools, purchase commercial property and run your own business... maybe money can be found for other things...

I'll wager there's a whole lot a creative accounting going in that family. What I find completely disgusting is that those parents used their kids as a propaganda tool. The democrats had this family in the bullpen which speaks volumes about how low they will go.

The story has gotten quite a lot of coverage (Google).
Its really screwed up when a group of people with a lower average income is paying for the healthcare of a group of people with a higher average income.
