My recent order(~3 weeks ago) contained one sample each of rowland gold, rowland platinum and ramck balkan. I have tried 20 of 34 D&R blends-they have "natural"? They have anything past 2005? haha. I smoked my 50/50 two timer/wind. plat. before this. All are at rh65% maintained. I am smoking one of each(in a cig. size tube) before writing each, taking me some time, ha (anticipated)cough ha...
Rowland Gold: Good. I have never tried McV. It is sweet, but not naturally. I get a maple-brown sugar smell from the jar. Taste is not carried. Medium strength smoke. On par with the stokkebye lines(handicap?). I want to like it. Would definately smoke it if they offered nothing else. Won't be included with my two timer/windsail platinum/three sails orders. I'd recommend everyone try it, it is good. Seems like a preferance/individual taste thing.
Rowland Platinum: Smells like, how a chocolate covered cherry tastes. Liquorice, chocolate, and cherries. I regret lighting another one up, but...Light smoke. Flavour not at all like the smell. Light yet thick smoke, starting to feel it in the throat. Put the smoke out half way. Very syrupy taste/feeling. I find it disgusting. Opinion. Like a flavored cigarello with a very very mild smoke. BUGLER, which i hate, smokers, try this.
Ramback Balkan: Smells nothing like Ramback. Smells like...very indistinct, which i like, ......tobacco. haha. fire it up...light smoke, but spicey...much lighter than Rowland Plat....very different. Very tasty. I smoke ~ pack a day, this is no good. I would not mind having this in my supply. No kick on inhale, flavor on exhale. Delicious, but very "spicey. Throat stings. I smoke very fast , too. I'm no connoisseur of exotics, which i would consider this to be. I hate ramback, this is "fun".
Thought i'd share something since D&R does not advertise/share/explain shi........tttt sorry, i stut..tter.

- My visit to D & R
- Posted by Craig H on Friday, 27-Apr-2007
Well I have finally had a day off in the middle of the week and was able to visit D & R in Smithfield. After about 2.5 hours on the road, I arrived at the retail store (right of I-95). When I walked in I noticed who I thought was Mark Ryan. I introduced myself to him and told him that I was up from Winston Salem. He thanked me for coming up and told me had to run some errands. He asked how long I was up for and I told him I was in no hurry. (Hoping for an offer of a tour!) He then invited me over to the warehouse. (Yes!) Well to say the least I was knocked over by his hospitality and passion for his business.

I was thinking to myself what a great guy and my visit to D & R surely started with a bang. Well it just kept getting better. I walked around the store smiling from ear to ear to be in a room with all of this tobacco. To say the least, the ladies were fantastic!! They were extremely helpful. What a great bunch of people. These were the most helpful and knowledgeable people. They asked what I like and I told them Vengeur, Ramback, Windsail, Ryback, Three Sails, etc. (quite honestly I have tried all except maybe 4 blends and have liked them all). Well after packing the car with many bags of tobacco, I went over to the warehouse.
Well I can only say that the two ladies there were just as nice and accommodating as the ladies at the retail store. I talked with them for about 30 minutes until Mark got there. He took me into the warehouse to show me around and the many tobaccos he has stored there, I can tell you there is nothing like seeing pounds and pounds of S J Rimboche and Ramback Balkan. Seeing just beautiful Balkan Virginia whole leaves. I have seen few tobaccos of this quality. The Virginia was just beautiful!! And the perique…oh my goodness. This is the real stuff. Truly amazing!!
Talking about being excited…I could hardly hold back my fascination and interest. Mark was kind enough to give me a sample of SJ (one of my top 5 favorites)and the Ramback Balkan. The Ramback Balkan is outstanding. The Turkish flavor is remarkable and such a smooth smoke. IMO, he is unleashing a giant here. It is smooth and full…a different taste from the Balkan Sobranies of old but just as outstanding and imo better. The quality is impeccable.
In these days of fast paced, big brick and mortar stores with no personalization, I can say Mark and his staff are truly a find…not only for being hospitable but for offering outstanding products. It is so nice to see people who really care about their products and customers.- Re: My visit to D & R

I hope to make it to Smithfield and D&R in person one day.
Your post describes exactly how I imagined it might be.
Great folks at D&R, not to mention the best tobacco blends.
Looking forward to trying the Ramback Balkan! Wish I could get a sample now!

Just had to throw my two cents in. I have been ryo/myo off and on for about 25 years (dang where does the time really go!!). And recently began rolling/stuffing my own again. I "started" with USA Drum, Bali Shag, American Spirit, etc. since I could not find some of the old time favorites (Drum, Old Holbourn, etc). Then in my quest to find some other tobaccos, I was fortunate enough to run across this site and others including ryomag.

Being from NC, I was more than intrigued to find a manufacturer here. I did my due diligence and read everything I could regarding these and other tobacs. So I ordered a selection of 10 cups from them.
I received my first order from D & R with much anticipation...like a kid in the candy store when the package arrived. I guess I had all ten cups opened in 5 minutes. Much to my delight, I found such gorgeous smells coming from the cups. Boy is this tobacco good. I certainly have not found a favorite yet nor do I expect too as they all have come to be favorites in one way or the other. The varying tastes…one will be my favorite in the morning and another in the afternoon. Being able to have a variety is just great. The quality of the tobacco is truly outstanding. I cannot say how super it is to have such a fine smoke.
Really, I guess my favorite so far is Ramback Gold...it is just pure pleasure. Other favorites at this time…Venguer, Old Timer and Three Sails.
Update: Just received another order and much to my delight the ones that I did not order in my first shipment are as every bit as outstanding as those in my first shipment. Kudos to Ramback, the Rimboche boys and Penhooker. Looking forward to getting home in time to watch the hockey game, stuffing some and relaxing.
Customer service and shipping are excellent.
Sorry for the long winded comments but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. It is great to see such a group of good people on this and other ryo/syo sites. Cheers to y’all and thanks for all of your comments and suggestions.- Re: D & R

Your comments remind me of my first experience with D & R! We, as smokers need entrepreneurs like Mark Ryan if we are to have good selections in tobacco to choose from. I may smoke other kinds of tobacco from time to time, but I always come back to D & R's tobacco blends, like Ramback! I think Mark is the only one in the business to experiment with new blends to try and cater to his customer's wants! I can't say enough about D & R, because they opened my eyes to a whole new experience in smoking! The problem as I see it is what happens if I can no longer get my tobacco from D&R because of some bureaucratic bullshit? There aren't any wholesalers around here that I know of that carry D & R's tobacco? I've tried to coax Cheap Tobacco into stocking it, but no luck so far. Mike

DnR just goes with the territory
I've discovered I really like the Cockstrong (girl "friend" got a good giggle when she heard me ordering that)...
Ryback Gold is working for me, and while I ration the Ramback, I have to watch the Avenger to make sure I don't wolf it too fast either.....
and boy do I like that pocket snuffer

I just had to stop at D & R my last trip through North Carolina (right off I-95). Mark Ryan was there and gave me a nice tour of the store and the tobacco. What a friendly and knowledgeable man. He showed me what real turkish leaf looked like (silver dollar size), rolled me up some smokes to taste, even sent me packing with some samples. He also gave me some nice stuffing tips (and I thought I was an expert...LOL). Also, he is working on some new tubes that will work better in the Supermatic stuffers.

I am a P.S. smoker (Amsterdam, Norwegian, even the lighter London Export and Danish) but must admit that D&R produces some high quality smokes. Not all are suited for my taste, but it is nice to know that we have one of the best companies right here in the USA producing diverse smokes for all of us to enjoy. And after my tour and Mark's kind treatment of me...I will start ordering more from D & R in the future.
Just thought I would share my experience...and my feelings that this is really a different kind of company. Kudos to D & R.

I've got a question for recent purchasers of D&R. With my most recent Rowland tub and the G.R. Rimboche tub purchase I have found that the tobacco seems to be over-blended. What I mean by this is that the length of the tobacco seems to be very short as if pulled apart or crushed in the blending process so it is full of not quite shake but very fine/short lengths of tobacco instead of the long strands that I have come to normally find. It may be that I just happened to get tobacco that came from what I would imagine in my minds eye to be the leftovers at the bottom of the blending bin. Now I would assume that this would happen of course in the blending process but to find a tub almost full of it was quite disappointing. Anyone else experience this with tub or 1lb bag purchases?

Although some folks here have told me that it is uncommon or even rare to get tobacco like that from D&R, a while back I got several bags of Ramback which were almost unstuffable because they were not just shake, but more like powder or even snuff.

Haven't had any problems like that since, but it does happen even with D&R. You may be correct that these bags are from the bottom of the batch, but I am not sure. Email Mark Ryan at D&R and tell him.
Good luck!

I received my order this past week. No Rowland or Rimboche but four other blends (two tubs and four bags) and they're okay. I've never had any problems with D&R but like someone else said, email or call Mark. There's a post or two here where someone had a bad tub/bag and Mark took care of them.

Anyone tried the new D&R "cigar blends"? Seems like it would be tasty in a vera cruz tube.

Although I have not tried all the tobaccos for MYO that are out there, I have tried quite a few and I will say without hesitation or qualification that D&R has something for everyone. High quality tobaccos in various tasty blends to suit any palette.

I only wish more (local) distributors would start carrying the D&R line of products. The one down side, for me, is the relatively high shipping costs compared to some other online outlets such as American Thrust.
In any case, if there isn't a blend from D&R that ends up being at least one of your regular smokes... quit! You have no taste buds.
Thanks Mark Ryan et al, for some really fine quality tobaccos!

as well as the D&R website /www.cigarettetobacco.com/ourtob1.htm
its all there & a matter of what YOU like & ALL are as described-theres no cheap tobacco at D&R!!!
Yes it seems high in price BUT a little math will show its not really that high in price for the QUALITY PRODUCT you get with no old dried up who knows where the tobacco has been.*****- Re: Daughters & Ryan (D&R)

I live in N.C. and have ordered from D&R for 5 years or longer and I have No Complaints about the products or the service or the shipping,They have been super good to me.I agree with Roger i don't like the menthol myself.

I have a tub of the Wintergold ordered to try out.I have not found a Menthol brand out of the bag/can yet on the market that i am satisfied with thus far,i always blend.Thankfully i like menthol and non-menthol smokes.D&R's Perique tobacco's is good one to give a try thats non-menthol.All there tobacco's are top shelf in quality and price....Once i try the wintergold i only have the two timer and cock strong to try.So many blends.Love it!
