I tried a sample of this - this is definitely a thick, heavy smoke. Cigar and expresso flavors, very stout. A darker type of smoke. I was expecting something like an old Chesterfield or Pall Mall, but Cockstrong is just on its own. I'd say its just a strong, classic American blend. Not distinctive enough for me. Probably best described as Vengeur x2. Thick, dark, heavy. I'd say it was pretty mild too - heavy feel to the smoke, but not harsh on the throat. Heavy in the lungs. Not a favorite of mine (Athey), but a good, robust smoke.

After finding that I really do like Gauloises, which I originally and later panned in my reviews, I looked for something to fill that empty slot.

No, Cockstrong does not fill that slot, but in my search I did gain a new respect for this tobacco. Frank's description is as good as I could ever give of Cockstrong... "Cigar and expresso flavors" is almost poetic in it's description. Nothing quite like it anywhere. I don't agree that it is Vengeur x2. This is definitely a different taste altogether and a totally different blend of tobaccos.

I consider this tobacco like a dessert. Especially after ice cream, dark chocolate, a good burgandy or fine bourbon. No need to define it as a dessert tobacco though, it stands on its own. Full bodied, satisfying and unique!

You might say it is best "sipped", but seasoned smokers will want to indulge in deep draws and slow exhales.

Kerry, what are your thoughts comparing Cockstrong and Five Brothers Smoking Tobacco? I enjoyed Cockstrong after I "Toasted it Twice"! I couldn't believe the difference it made! Me and straight Burley don't get along to well. Capt Mike

Capt. could you please explain what you did to the cockstrong as far as toasting it. I know what toasting is and would like to do it to this blend as I have quite a bit of it. in what way did it change it and how did you toast it.

Re: Cockstrong

Well, first off if there is anyone else in the house you'll need to wait till late at night to toast your tobacco, because those vegitals and other properties will smell up your kitchen for a while. I used a toaster oven to do mine in.
First you turn the toaster oven on broil, and use the lowest power setting you can. Use a flat cookie sheet lined with Aluminum foil, and spread out the tobacco thinly and evenly. When you see the elements in the top of the oven just starting to turn red is your cue to move. Place the cookie sheet in the oven and count to 7 (Seven), then remove the cookie sheet. While allowing it to cool a little you should move around the tobacco--redistribute it around the sheet, then repeat the process one more time! It's important to begin your count when the door closes, and remove the sheet promptly when you get to 7! To toast, the tobacco needs to reach a temperature of 170 Degrees. If it gets too hot--no good, not hot enough can be toasted again.
You will be amazed at the change that takes place in the tobacco! It won't be as good as Two Timer, but it'll be 100% better than Air Cured Burley! I got the instructions from Doug Kennedy at RYO Magazine, and it's been a while since I've done any toasting, but if I were to toast some tobacco tonight that is the way I'd do it! Enjoy, and good luck. Capt Mike

Need help. What is the best Rh for the Cockstrong? Mine got dry, I finally got a hygrometer and airtight tub. thanks.

Re: Cockstrong

Between 60% and 66% RH, though I favor closer to the 66%, it's a matter of your personal preference. The higher the RH of the tobacco--the mellower the smoke, and the dryer or lower the RH of the tobacco--the harsher the smoke. As an example, tobacco that is 55% to 60% RH will have some folks thinking the tobacco is stale; whereas all it needs is and additional 5 to 10% RH to be perfect! Hope that helps, Capt Mike

Current Cockstrong Batch Disappointing?
Posted by Michael P on Wednesday, 25-Apr-2007

Wonder if anyone else has ordered Cockstrong recently. Did you find that robust burley taste was missing? Seemed to me to taste more like Vengeur (as well as look noticeably lighter than in the past). Suspect the needed tobacco leaves weren't available.

I got three bags in around the 1st of April and haven't noticed any difference. Cockstrong is my daily smoke and Penhooker (spouse favorite) seemed the same too.

Mark has been given a special crown.
call him
speak of that which ails you
ps-when I first ordered Cockstrong, my friend Robin heard me and just broke into laughter
I have made peace with the name, in fact, it's appealing on some strange level

I never thought I'd find a D & R Blend I didn't care for! Way too strong Burly Bouquet, and the first time I had a "Buzz" off tobacco since I began smoking back when. Back when was when I couldn't wait for my cousin to light up a Lucky; so I could smell that "Bouquet'. I've blended some, and toasted some in my toaster-oven. Even at 4 grams per ounce Cockstrong; with 24 grams of other tobacco can be tasted and smelled! With that said, I still think it is a good quality and unique tobacco, even if I don't care for it!

Agree. I like to blend Cockstrong with all kinds of D&R-based mixes - a favorite is 3 parts Penhooker (gold virginias, 45% Canadian), 2 parts Cockstrong, 1 part Ramback (Turkish) - a tad sweet on the tongue, no bite, a rich inhalation experience. (I also substitute D&R's Vengeur Platinum for the Cockstrong in the same or similar Penhooker-Ramback mix).

Holy Moly! This stuff is dynamite. Rich in taste, flavor and room aroma. I like to exhale this slowly and sniff the smoke as i do with great pipe tobacco. It's that good. If it were any stronger it would be cloying and overpowering in nicotine. As it is D&R came up with perfect balance in all aspects. The Chesterfields,Lucky Stikes and Camels of old were never this good. If it were a commercially packaged cigarette i would buy it. And I am a strictly a RYO guy.

Cockstrong has a great aroma & taste that's a little cigar like, but not in a way that makes it nasty to inhale like a cigarillo. I think anyone who appreciates a strong & complex cigarette will appreciate this blend. I also believe that any cigarillo smoker will especially like these in a Vera Cruz tube. Give it try.

Re: C@ckstrong
Posted by Kev on Saturday, 02-Jul-2005

I was a bit cautious about opening a tub of C@ckstrong due to the name and description. I envisioned a harsh, strong tobacco in need of a "do not operate heavy machinery under the influence" label.

Stuffed in my normal Gizeh light tubes I was surprised.      C@ckstrong reminds me of the prepackaged smokes produced a few decades ago. A rich, strong flavor but without the harshness. Yes, a normal smoker of prepackaged ultra-lights would probably get dizzy but they wouldn't be coughing (I stuffed one with some vanilla and gave it to the spouse). While this doesn't replace my D&R favorites of the Rimboche twins and Two Timer, it's a nice change. A very good tobacco for mixing when you come across another blend that needs that extra kick.

Cockstrong is one of my favorite SYO tobaccos. It stuffs very well in a supermatic. I use full flavor tubes for a very satisfying smoke. Shipped from the fine folks at D&R at just the right moisture level for stuffing. If I want a more mellow smoke I blend with D&R's Vengur tobacco. One must store Cocstrong in a sealed container or it will dry out quickly. Rate 8 out of 10.

~$17 to $28 per pound depending on unit size.

The maker's description: "A full bodied, traditional American Blend, with a robust taste reminiscent of blends from the mid-20th century. This flavorful and satisfying blend contains exotic flue-cured Gold Leaf, air-cured Burley and Oriental tobaccos from around the world. No chemical flavorings or casings added."

Packed with flavor and aroma, in a 1940's Sam Spade wharf and fog at midnight way, this IS smoking. Powerful, smooth, rich, liquid. Medium coarse shag cut.
