- Two Timer Standard NAILS the "Lucky" Taste
- Posted by Frank on Monday, 25-Jun-2007
I just wanted to add, for those seeking the Lucky Strike unfiltered taste, that Two Timer standard really nails it. NAILS it. Rolled unfiltered with the very nice Gizeh auto-roller and some good 70mm papers of your choice, you'll have that mild, slightly sweet Lucky taste, which is exactly what I was looking for (and FWIW, Two Timer Gold didn't get near the Lucky taste and in fact, I really didn't like the Gold much at all). I know someone below said the Two Timer standard didn't remind them of the Lucky flavor, but I STRONGLY disagree, and feel qualified to make that judgement as a faithful unfiltered Lucky smoker. I wonder if they were stuffing them into filter tubes, or had an off batch, which would change things a lot I bet. So that's my two cents - and I also think those looking for the Pall Mall unfiltered taste (which is my second fav smoke) would be very happy with the Two Timer standard as well. The Two-Timer Gold really was a completely different flavor and I also found that blending Two Timer standard with any other tobacco seemed to nullify the toasted burley flavor, which I love. And also, D&R is a great company with lots of great tobacco, but my search is done - I now have a replacement for my Lucky Strikes. Two Timer Standard Means Fine Tobacco!

A lot of the time when people ask for a replacement for Brand X here they are met with silence because each brand of RYO is its very own and unique.
I can back you up on Two Timer being a good replacement for non-filtered Luckies. I think it may be in the toasting.
I've also heard that the M in L.S.M.F.T. stands for "Minced" rather than "Means".

Now this is some tasty stuff! just the right amount of flue cured Virginia to give it a smooth full flavor. Excellent taste on inhale and exhale. I like it a lot and even better with just a touch of Ramback added to it.

Just a fabulous, nutty, satisfying smoke! Tastes great on its own, or blended with a little Ramback and/or Rowland and Windsail. For me, it has "rounded out" just about any tobacco I've tried so far. Most definitely a staple blend for me.

Now you are getting into my type of blend. Although I haven't used Two Timer Gold (I choose to blend the Windsail P and TT myself), and even though Burley tobacco has taken some abuse in reviews, not so for TT.
[ reply | link ] to this. Go to [ parent | topic | top ]
Until Ramback Balkan, my daily blend was TT, WP, and Ramback in equal parts. The only change was adding RB as an equal contributor.
Two things that have been consistent for me in my blends have been TT and Ramback, although I do miss the original Ramback. (sigh)- Re: Two Timer Gold

Kerry, when it comes to Two Timer, Ramback Gold, and Ramback Balkan in equal parts; IMO nothing else comes as close to perfection except for a different blend including TT, R, Windsail Platinum, and RB! My blend this month is equal parts of TT, RG, RB. I admit to bouts of laziness when it comes to the WP and R blending when RG is in my cupboard; since it's 40% Ultra Flu Cured already! The inhale with the Two Timer & Windsail Platinum married & dominant, and the exhale with the Izmur and Yenidje delicately there riding on the Balkan Virginia! I think this blend would make a good one to use when trying to explain the intricacies of smoking and enjoying Turkish blended smoke; since each tobacco has a "Cameo" performance. Without D&R's tobaccos I don't think such a delicate and subtle balance would be obtainable! Using my old blend of equal parts of Ramback, TT, and WP isn't quite as tasty, but it's in there! I completely agree with mike re: D & R Tobacco; without that fabulous variety kit and the sample packs of the 'newer' blends, I don't think I would have been able to hit on the flavors that I like so quickly! In addition, the comments/reviews in this forum have been invaluable to me when deciding what brands I would like to sample. The participants here seem to do a great job of describing the different flavors and qualities of each brand, hitting the nail on the head, so to speak, so that I have a good starting point from which to investigate. You folks have saved me infinitite loads of time and money, and for that, I thank you all! :-)

I roll rather than stuff. You don't pour soda on good scotch, you don't strain good tobacco through a filter. I like my smoke to be rich, thick, smooth, and sweet. Lots of brands have come close, but Two Timer gold absolutely nails it. I'm not sure how they read my mind, but I'm awfully glad they did.

If your tastes seem remotely like mine, you owe yourself to give it a try. This stuff caused a friend who was stanchly anti-syo ("it's what you have to do in prison") to run out and get a supermatic.
It's that good.
- How strong is D&R's Two Timer?
- Posted by V.B. on Friday, 30-Sep-2005
Could anyone give me an idea how strong Two Timer (and/or Two Timer Gold) blends are? (By 'strong' I mean the throat/lung sensation on inhale)

I was looking for a fallback to Natural American Spirit (original blend, see another thread /Tobacco/Brands/114.html on NAS strength) tobacco which I smoke in non-filtered tubes. From the reviews here it seemed that the Two Timer ought to be close. So I got a TT tub few weeks ago and it turned out TT is like a mild version of NAS. The basic impression (crisp and clean) is nearly the same, just the full strenght is missing in TT. I wish D&R would make another blend for which NAS would be a milder variant (maybe a single toasted burley might work).
[ reply | link ] to this. Go to [ top ]
One way I found to make NAS even stronger is to smoke it right after a stick of Gauloises. For several NAS sticks that follow, the kick is noticably stronger. The direct blending of the equivalent amounts of tobacco (such as 1 Gauloises to 4 NAS) doesn't quite achieve the same effect. The Black Death tobacco ( /Tobacco/Brands/14.html ) shows a similar "NAS priming" effect, although not quite as striking as the Gauloises.

It's not a light tobacco but it won't make your head spin. Even if it's too strong for your taste, you can always stuff with a light tube. I haven't tried the gold yet.

- Two Timer and vintage Lucky Strike
- Posted by V.B. on Tuesday, 17-Jan-2006
RYO Magazine described D&R's Two Timer as "similar to historic Luckies, but milder". I loved TT and continue to use it as my primary smoke. But I wonder about its similarity to Lucky Strike of old for the following reason:
[ reply | link ] to this. Go to [ top ]
Among many vintage Lucky ads I have, those from mid to late-1920s speak ONLY of toasted Burley tobacco. Beginning with early 1930, Lucky ads speak of TURKISH and DOMESTIC tobaccos blended in their brand (just like Camel and Chesterfield of old).
Since TT has no Turkish component (or Virginia for that matter), its similarity to old Luckies would have to be to pre-1930s kind. And I doubt that RYO Magazine editor is THAT old to have tried the pure burley version of Luckies.
So I wonder what he was talking about...- Re: Two Timer and vintage Lucky Strike
- Posted by mike11667 on Friday, 27-Jan-2006
I think the similarity to Luckies comes more from the double toasting process than the burley. Even after the tobacco change I'm pretty sure the Lucky pack still included "It's Toasted" or something to that effect.

It really tastes nothing like Lucky Strike. In the same article RYO also stated that WinterGold tastes like Nat Sherman Touch of Mint. It does not.

I've stopped paying attention to RYO's comparisons. It obvious they make these based on what a tobacco should theoretically taste like, and not based in reality.

For a straight burley this is a good smoke. It has the full body without the usual blandness or mudiness as some describe it. Also good for blending. For myself,i blend it with McClintock Virginia on occasion with good results. I will buy this again.

- Two Timer Gold + Ramback Gold
- Posted by V.B. on Tuesday, 29-Nov-2005
Mixed these two about 50/50 and the result was absolutely delicious. If I could trust my memory, I'd swear this blend (because of its combination of double toasted burley and turkish/virginia component) is as close to the old Chesterfield as one could possibly get. But then I haven't yet tried TT regular blended with Ramback, so perhaps there are additional surprises waiting for me.

Just tried several of the new D&R blends. The best one so far is the Two Timer Gold. Injected in a Silver Tip tube, It is a smooth and flavorful smoke. No harshness and a pleasant sensation on the tip of the tongue. This will be one of my regular smokes.- Re: Two Timer Gold

Just received some Two Timer Gold today in my latest shipment from D&R. I'd been using the regular Two Timer blended with Windsail Platinum and Ramback. It's nice to see that, with the Gold, I can pretty much skip one step of the blending process and just mix in a bit of Ramback with the straight Gold. An excellent, nutty flavour (as so many have noted) and with the Ramback, a true bit of heaven.

D & R was out of Athey for the six pack sampler & sent Two Timer Gold as a substite to go along with the bag of regular Two Timer. I mixed some with the Ramback about 70/30 and it's as good as you say. I also like to blend it with Ryback.

- Posted by Tim Mc. on Tuesday, 10-Feb-2004
A new Daughters and Ryan creation, the Two-Timer is an uniquely incredible 100% blend of air-cured Burleys. This is a fantastic everyday tobacco that plays very well with others and also holds its own when smoked by itself. The unique properties of which I have taken note is that it is very smooth and clean, while it also provides a wonderfully balanced flavor. The moment you open the container the smell takes over your nose. It has a ravishing, sweet, almost uncanny tobacco scent to it that may make you want to dive in and eat it (NOT recommended by logical people everywhere). Flavor is indeed a bit nutty, sweet, and rich. However, it doesn't linger or build-up as some tobaccos do, especially when they have this level of a distinct taste to them.

Perhaps it is the double-toasting process which D&R makes claim to remove most of the excess vegatative and other extraneous compounds found in such a ripe-from-the-earth product as this. Perhaps it also is just a super-premium tobacco.
The cut is fine and long and ideal for stuffing in a tube machine. Single 3.5 oz tubs go for $6.20 on D&R's website, and the 14 oz bag sells direct for $16.95. As an ideal main component tobacco for blending with other tobaccos (D&R's Ramback perhaps?) or all by itself, this is a fantastic product, full of consistent excellent flavor.- Re: Two Timer
- Posted by Kurt Wall on Sunday, 28-Mar-2004
I tried a 3.5 ounce tub of this on my last D&R order, and I haven't regretted it. Two Timer has a great flavor, and I especially enjoy the sweet flavor. What I call the "finish," how it tastes when I exhale, is pleasant and smooth, not bitter or harsh as I've experienced with other so-called "American blends."

A Virginia like blend of 100% Burley's? (or do the Burley's all come from Virginia?). I don't associate sweet and smooth with Burley, sounds interesting.

Yes, it does have a "sweet" and "nutty?" flavor, for a burley.
[ reply | link ] to this. Go to [ top ]
But, it is 100% burley and, although it is very good for a pure burley with NO virginia blended in for sweetness, it still tends to smother my palette a little as does most all burley. But Two Timer is very good for a pure burley.
In any case, the "double toasting" does take out much of the "smothering" qualities of burley, just not all. For burley lovers, this should be a best pick and for others it is a decent smoke. Just don't expect a virginia tobacco taste!
Probably better for blending for most folks and possibly more for those looking for a "look alike" taste of some pre-made smokes which I suspect are mostly burley and casing.
