I took Captain Mike's advise and tried some Penhooker (Regular)

and WOW! I like it. It's going to be another of my main smokes along with Rowland, Rowland Gold, Windsail, Ryback, and Ramback. As a matter of fact I haven't tried a D&R yet I didn't like and to think I was spending over $210.00 a month on Liggett Select factory mades and only enjoying 2 or 3 of them a day. D&R says the Penhooker is 100% flue cured gold leaf including around 45% Canadian leaf. It's sweet with a subtle buttery waffle like flavor. Great Stuff!

I purchased a 3.5 oz tub of Penhooker Light about 10 days ago. When first tasting it, I really didn't know quite what to make of it. I am still relatively new to SYO and so finding my way around with different types of tobaccos, so I knew nothing of what a Canadian Virginia blend should taste like. I really wasn't that impressed in the beginning.

Over time, however, the flavor of the Penhooker Light has REALLY grown on me. It's very distinct with a sweet edge, but not overwhelmingly so as with the Rave or the Stokers. It has become one of my favorite flavors, although I do only smoke it occasionally, given that my daily smoke is always ultralight.
I have found myself stuffing at least a couple of sticks of Penhooker Light per day, if not stuffing at least 6 sticks to fit into a section of my Smokey boxes as I refill them.
I tried a somewhat altered idea based on this [link], which suggested mixing 2 parts of Wingate with 1 part Penhooker. I instead mixed one part of the Penhooker Light with two parts of the Wingate Light. It made for one helluva smooth menthol light smoke. It NEVER would have occurred to me to mix Penhooker Light with Wingate Light, but it is as if they were made to be blended together.

I have tried all of D&R's tobaccos. Penhooker light was a smooth draw, but the lack of taste left me with an unpleasant, dry mouth. I put the can away. Two timer is great. I was running low on tobacco waiting for my order, so i mixed penhooker light with two timer ~50/50...wow

After my experience with the 3.5 oz sample tub i bought a while back, i decided to buy the 14oz bag. Exactly like the sample tub, a nice full flavored canadian style that stuffs easily right out of the bag. Smooth burning all the way to the last puff.

Just received my first pouch of Penhooker Light today and immediately stuffed a couple Silver Tip Light tubes as well as a couple of El Rey Lights. This particular blend is nice and smooth, no harshness at all, and has a nice full-bodied flavour for a "light." In fact, it seemed a bit stronger tasting in the El-Reys, but still no harshness or funk at all.

It's certainly more "flavourful" than the Windsail Platinums (which I really like as an everday smoke), and I'll likely try a 60/40 blend of WP to Penhooker Light to counterbalance the quite unobtrusiveness of the WP. I think I'm gonna like this stuff....

When I opened the can I was afraid of what I'd find since it's cut just like the mass produced cigarettes. Penhooker regular has a nice light flavor and stuffs easily. Imagine I'll have to mix the can of Penhooker light with a stronger tobacco for my tastes. For those newbies that are looking for "something similar" to their old premade smokes, I'd suggest Penhooker as a start. A nice flavor without all the additives. A good introduction to SYO before venturing into Rimboche, Bali and such.

I really took a flyer on Penhooker as I'd never had Canadian style and had no idea what to expect other than according to Roll Your Own magazine Canadian was a good choice to blend with Ramback. I don't know how well it typifies the style but Penhooker is very very good. To my tastes it's light with a faint almost smokiness to it and a definite sweetness that's subtle yet enjoyable. It's difficult to describe a taste but my wife called it "toasty sweet" which to me about sums it up.

It's a fairly large cut which stuffs easily and well though it was a bit too moist and had to be dried a little. Also it is amazing with Ramback, which brings out the sweetness, and with a Halfzware shag (I used Bali Halfzware) which brings out the smoky-spicy notes. I have found a few large stem pieces, nothing extreme but a bit of a surprise to find in such a quality tobacco. Nonetheless this is definitely going on my list of favorites.

I think D&R has something for every taste/smoker out here! There are some of his blends I dont care for such as menthol (wingate) & Rowland which is "flavored to taste like Premium U.S. manufactured cigarettes".

Thats whats great about D&R! what you read on their website or Doug's reviews on RYO mag is just what you get, and its all quality tobacco.
The Penhooker (light) is a subtle Canadian light -very little added casings or flavorings(as with MOST of D&R's blends) but yet a rich tasting Canadian if I may compare it with Export 'a' it does have "That taste" but not the full smooth lightness of Export 'a' its very good & I hope the Canadian/light or no big bad flavorings & syrups added tobaccos catch on because as the mass marketed pre mades have had us in their pockets WAY TOO LONG! & fooled us into believing tobacco tastes like what comes out of THEIR packs but we; the MYO/RYO world are starting to show the rest of the smoking world that their is another way.
There are three of D&R's blends that I could call my everyday smoke but I enjoy a little variety & I could say hands down IF D&R's blends were the only MYO/RYO tobaccos were the only ones available to us 95% of us would have what we want.
