My latest menthol discovery is the People's True Taste menthol ultralight. This is the only company that sells a menthol ultralight rolling tobacco, as far as I am aware. This tobacco, when stuffed into a Gizeh Menthol Tip tube, makes the lightest possible menthol ultralight, with a very smooth menthol taste, as well as a very light nicotine hit. I highly recommend!

Menthol [was Re: Rowland Platinum]
Posted by Rob S on Wednesday, 29-Aug-2007

McClintock Light and McClintock Menthol is my menthol blend also, and I agree, it is very good. Like no other menthol I've ever had on the pre made market.

I also like Sagamore Light and Sagamore Menthol in a light, non menthol tube, preferably El Rey. In the right combination, it tastes similar to a Marlboro Menthol, only better. My friend, who's been a Marlboro smoker for a long time, tends to agree with me.

I just recently purchased a pound of Wingate Gold and Rowland Light, and I'll be experimenting with that blend, although the one stick that I stuffed with those two components was tasty. The last few days though, I've been smoking Rowland Light unblended. I really like the sweet aftertaste during exhale, although, sometimes, it can be a bit rough on the throat during inhale. It's almost like an icy hot experience. That's the only way I can describe it, and although some people don't like it, or think it's got too much of a bite, I look forward to my next one.

We're real close on taste, it appears. I haven't experienced any roughness from Rowland light although the blend seems even smoother. Tubes may make a difference - Vera Cruz Noctures here and I like the older ones (CTC not D&R's - wish Mark would change back to the darker paper). As I've mentioned before, most white tubes taste either like paper or bleach to me... Rizla + de luxe (red box) being the exception.

Before going to the McC lt/menthol blend I used Wingate gold and Wingate light - preferred the Gold. Good tasting (not like McC light though) but some harshness after a while.

Re: Menthol [was Re: Rowland Platinum]

Ken, as we speak, I'm smoking a Wingate Gold stuffed in a menthol tube, and I find it to be very mild. Usually, menthol tobacco, even menthol light tobacco, stuffed in a menthol tube, has somewhat of a kick to it. I don't find that with the Wingate Gold. It's surprisingly, very smooth and mild, and somewhat close to my McClintock mix, only the wingate doesn't impart that nutty taste to a degree that the McClintock light does. You can definitely tell that Wingate is a Virginia tobacco though, even to this newbie.

I don't see this tobacco as being compatible with significant blending, and still retain a menthol taste. I think it can be toned down, or altered, very little only.

Actually, I'm inclined to like it that way, since, I haven't found a mentholated tobacco yet that, stuffed in a menthol tube and unblended, doesn't freeze my tonsils at one point or another. This stuff doesn't do that.

I'm wondering though, if the batch that I have is typical.

Anyway, even though my main menthol blend is McC/M and McC/L, the actual blending is a pain in the ass and very time consuming, given the cut, and the tobacco's tendency to cling and intertwine.

It's good to know that, when I'm in the mood, I just pull some out of the bag, stuff it, and be done with it.

I smoked a lot of the Winsail/Wingate Gold blend and as someone mentioned last month, those tobaccos Winsail Planitum/Gold etc. tend to be slightly less smooth and after a while and that's what happened with me (and the wife too). Rowland light with the McC's blend doesn't have that long term effect on me. Frankly I don't care if other people can tolerate smoking pine tar. I want something smooth and tasty. :-)

I try out a lot of stuff and many times as was the case with the 'buckeye's best' menthol light, I though wow this is better than the McC. I made up a batch with that instead of the McC, and I began tasting the difference after a while - and it was a taste thing rather than any harshness. Just had one today and, it's subtle but I could still tell.

When I get something new I do a 'double blind' test by numbering the filter, then mixing them up with a few of my regular cigs, take notes, remember sequence, then check for a number later... lol

Right now... (it's all tentative :) I'm finding that the Rowland Gold tends to smooth out some of the McC full flavored menthol. And the RG adds to the taste as well. So I'm at 2 R.Lt 1 R.Gold 1 McC Lt and 2 McC menthol at this point. Basically a 2:1 mix, reg:menthol.

I hear ya on the blending though. McC is stringy but I'm in no rush and although I do pull it apart after I mix it up it 'picks up' the Rowland so the packing is almost like packing pure shag.

Well I think that just about any of the less expensive menthol tobaccos are pretty good. Ahh, except for the farmers gold brand. I would not try it. Before I started making my own smokes I was a menthol smoker. Since I started making my own I've found myself smoking non-menthol more. My menthol stuffing is a treat smoke now. Once and a while, so a pound will last six months to a year. Hey, try D&R's Athey. While not a menthol it has a taste all it's own. I think it tastes like an old fashioned ginger ale. Like I've read here on this site it is a true Sunday afternoon smoke for fishing, walking, after cutting the grass, etc..
Back to the menthol. You'll find most are pretty heavily mentholated and you'll have to cut it with other regular tobacco. Check out the blend section here and enjoy.

Nick,

I tried all the $1 samples at Ameican Thrust Tobacco:

[link]

I was looking for a light menthol, but I tried the full flavored as well. Scroll down to my menthol post for the evaluations or better, just order some of the samples. I started with a combination of D&R's Wingate light and McClintock Menthol, and now only use the McC. For me it's the best menthol taste out there. It costs a little bit more than you're paying though. One closer in price but still a good smoke, would be Am. Thrust's premier menthol.

NEWBIE **
Posted by Kelley on Friday, 16-Feb-2007

My mother has turned me on to MYO and I have been at it for about a week. I have only been smoking around 10 or so years and have always smoked Marlboro Menthol Lights. Truth is I had to be about desparate to smoke something else. So far I have tried Bugler, Midnight Special, and Kite Full Flavor menthols, which are a little strong for my taste. I have recently placed an order to American Thrust for some samples and am looking forward to getting those. I am currently rolling on a hand roller, but looking into some crank injectors. I am still learning and would be grateful for any advice anyone has to share. I would like to find a little lighter tasting menthol maybe not identical to Marlboro but similar. Thanks

Re: Iceberg

I actually moved from Iceberg to Wingate Gold, mostly because I order from D&R now, rather than go to the brick and mortar shop I used to.

Iceberg is basically the menthol Stoker's Pure and Natural. It had a sweet, almost fruity flavor I really enjoyed. However, the menthol flavor was way over the top, and I found myself mixing it with McClintock Virginia (when it was availible).

I really enjoyed Iceberg, but switched because I found Wingate to be a big boost in quality, with not a very big boost in price.

Menthol
Posted by Kent on Tuesday, 08-Aug-2006

I’ve been lurking for a while and thought I'd post on menthol because when I was looking for menthol suggestions the info was sketchy. **Because taste is so subjective and different people taste the same things differently, I’ll just give a ‘history’ of my smokes, and you can judge accordingly. I started smoking menthol Kool filters. Then after trying Newport, and a few others, I settled on Salem regulars, then ‘progressed’ to Salem Lights and to Salem Ultra Lights. My take on various menthols:

Kools (not lights) – strong but no ‘other tastes’ ie. good menthol.
Newport – not as strong as Kools, but with a sweetness I didn’t care for.
Salem – smoothest menthol, no ‘other tastes’.
Salem Ultra Lights – smooth, not harsh at all – no other tastes
Benson Hedges – close to Salem menthol
Camel Menthol (lights) closest to Salem UL. My second choice when Salem UL wasn’t available.

The blend I use now (and this is after experimenting) is (using a myweigh scale):

4 parts Rowland Light
1 part Wingate Light
1 part McClintock Menthol

I’m not saying that ‘tastes’ like a Salem UL – it’s much better… but if your tastes happen to agree with the above, or were a Salem UL smoker, I’d guess that you might find such a blend enjoyable – unless you just don’t care for the Rowland from D&R. BTW, I personally don’t taste any ‘cocoa’ with the Rowland light when smoking, although you can smell it when loading. Also I’ve noticed that on relighting a ½ cig there isn’t that strong tobacco taste on first puffs, and the butts don’t smell as bad in the ashtray and the second hand smoke isn’t as harsh, imo, of course.

I use Vera Cruz Nocturne tubes and I’ve tried a few - ZigZag light – strong paper taste but not harsh; Ramback Elite – no paper taste but the same blend in Vera Cruz tastes much less harsh – perhaps due to whatever used to whiten. Same with Ramback Prestige. Any menthol tubes were just too much and had off tastes, imo. I used to punch holes in all others and don’t need to with the Vera Cruz tubes – plus I really like how they load on the premier supermatic. I can ‘tap’ (even push) the filter end while on the machine to help fill the ‘neck’ (by the filter) without them collapsing. My experience (on my second case [cheaper] - ie over 50 boxes) quality has been uniform, no ungluing or no glue or paper taste at all.

Wingate Gold – most like Kool menthol
Wingate Light – not as strong as the Gold but still not as smooth as Salem menthol
McClintock Menthol – ‘the right menthol’ but in the full flavored tobacco – really like to see a McClintock Menthol Light made with McClintock’s light tobacco. In fact, if they made that I’d probably drop out the Wingate light from the blend. I tried that but with the regular McC menthol but the tobacco taste was too strong.

Through the $1/ounce samples from American Thrust, I tried all the menthol lights and a few other menthol regulars in blends with the ultra light offerings. These are blends with Rowland light at the ‘constant’.

Stoker Menthol – strong but no other tastes
AmerThrust Menthol light – smooth – best of those tested other than the above mix.
Old Hillside Menthol – harsh, bad taste – worst for my palette
Farmer’s Gold Menthol lt. – Ok
Golden Harvest Menthol lt. – Ok
Stokers No. 2 Menthol – good menthol but strong
Ultra lights:
Tried all of them and while Gamblers UL was the best, all had veggy tastes to them (burley?) with Old Hillside not even being ‘light’. Also didn’t care for Farmers Gold UL. AmThrust, Stoker’s No. 2 and Golden Harvest were light/ultra light but off taste, imo.

Again, if you don’t like Rowland, I’ve found this blend to be quite good (for an ex- Salem UL smoker) but more in a regular cigarette taste:
4 parts PenHooker Light – great base.
3 parts Winsail Light
3 parts Wingate Light – menthol
2 parts Ramback Gold – Turkish
2 parts Two Timer Gold

Oddly, none of them smoke all that well alone, but the blend is rather good. That was before I started adding McClintock Menthol, so splitting the menthol factor between Wingate light and McClintock might work.

Another thing I found (again subjective taste) is that while Rowland light mixes well with Menthol, it doesn’t mix that well with the other blends in the above – Pen Hooker, Ramback gold, Two Timer gold, Winsail Platinum and light, etc. In fact, I threw a whole batch of that mix out after trying a few cigs.

Hope this helps someone…

menthol in general
Posted by Jeff March on Sunday, 02-Apr-2006

Hi,
I just started MYO and I noticed that there isnt much for menthol fans. Im 44, and started smoking at 15, with camel and lucky strike shorts. Then I switched to menthol when I met my lady and now my wife, who smoked newports. Before I started MYO, I was smoking marlboro menthol lights, and doral menthol light 100s. Taxes drove the cost to $50 a carton and I said screw it. In less than a month I messed with a couple of tube/tobacco combos. I started with zigzag and messed with top, but after reading a lot of posts here, I think I hit on a winning combo for someone who is just trying to replace their over the counter smoke. Right now im using zigzag menthol with zigzag light king size tubes, and my Supermatic set at the 100 setting. After about six taps on the table, I seemed to have a nice smoke.
If you have any other ideas for us menthol light fans,LMK.
Thanks, Jeff

There best menthol I've ever tried was Drum Milde Menthol. At that time it was a Douwe Egberts product in a 50g pouch with a quote or witticism printed on the inside flap. It had a fine shag cut and was the most crisp and mild menthol ever. I don't care much for menthol but Drum menthol wasn't overpowering and tasted great without a filter. If I could find another like it with the same cut I would buy a small quantity.

I do have to agree with you. As far as menthol goes there are only two that I like. Both D&R's Windgate Gold and McClintock menthol are the best for my tastes. Try McClintock menthol in either the D&R's Windsail tube, or in the new El Rey Light tube A real good Combination!

Are the Windsail tubes from St. Vincent & made in the Philippines? The old ones I have are from CTC and they aren't fit to be stuffed with good tobacco from D&R. The filter element is way too loose and wants to work its way out of the tipping paper when smoked.

El Rey Lights are pretty decent tubes and a good diluted menthol would be nice. I'd prefer that over the El Rey Menthol tubes that I finally threw out.

Windsail and El Rey Light tubes
Posted by Denny on Friday, 05-May-2006

I am not sure where they are made now, but I can tell you that I stuffed three boxes (300) and didn't have a bad tube out of the bunch. I must agree that the paper is not the higest grade, but the paper does not add any extra flavor either. I do know that D&R is the backer of them, and it appears that Mr.Ryan is having his Ramback made by St. Vincent. If you get any orders from D&R, you can ask them for some samples, they might even throw in a box free!
As far as the new El Rey light tube, I prefer smoking them over the old perf filter, as the new ones draw more even, and you have a positive draw.

I really like the flavor of the Stokers #2 Menthol in a ZigZag 100mm Full Flavor Tube. These are better than any production menthol cigarette made by anyone these days. The cut of the tobacco makes it easy to stuff these tubes almost to the max in a 100mm tube. Most all of the internet tobacco shops carry either this or IceBerg which is similar.

McClintock is a real fine, almost shag cut. Good cool, crisp menthol. I usually tone it down by mixing one 13oz can of menthol with a 6oz can of full flavor and wrap it up in an Elray FF tube. Single Stick menthol is what I am smoking right this second. It is a shag cut, really dry, with very little menthol, and it kinda tastes like a cider mill smells. It's OK, but I probably won't buy it again.

I've never been able to compare SYO tobaccos to store bought so I won't touch the Doral question. I've found about 4 base tobaccos that I really like but they don't even compare to the pre-mades I use to smoke.

I will suggest some D&R Wingate Gold for the menthol. It's overpowering by itself but really nice if you add it as 10-20% to another non-menthol blend. The wife likes menthols. I don't but I'll even smoke Wingate with her favorite blend or mine.

A friggin + on this blend dude! I used this formula altered for lights, mixing 1 part of Penhooker Light to two parts of Wingate Light. It made for one helluva smooth menthol light smoke. It NEVER would have occurred to me to mix these two, but the results were amazing. Thanks for the recipe.

Yikes, I haven't smoked menthol's since I dabbled with Kools back in the early 70's :) But your question is interesting because you ask the same question that I asked (and probably most others) when switching from packaged cigs to Myo and that's 'what tobacco matches what I currently smoke'.

When I started MYO I was smoking Marlboro Reds and was looking for it's substitute. After reading all the websites I hooked up with the tobacco called 61 which was a pretty good substitute I suppose. Here's where I had an epiphany.

My local smoke shop jerked me around saying they would get it but never did. (I had ordered some 61 on-line and really didn't want to have to order tobacco on-line when I could just zip by the store) In the meantime I was pouring over MYO Magazine and trying their suggestions, bali red, stokkebye etc. and finally hit on McClintock Virginia which I found to be outstanding.

My point is, I think when most people first switch to MYO they are naturally looking to replace their brand but with just a little help they (like me) will find out that their brand was crap to start with, the replacement that tastes like their brand is crap and they will find a wide range of really good tasting tobacco's at a fraction of the price.

I'll wager that in a month or two from now you'll be thinking the same thing.

I used to smoke Salem's and then Doral menthols. For my money, you can't beat D&R Wingate menthol stuffed into a Mascotte menthol tube. I found the D&R Wingate Gold to be too mild, and the Kite and Top menthol too harsh.

But try different combinations, you will find something you really like.

I would really like a cigarette right now. Been wearing the patch for the last 5 days. At 53 and many years of smoking the doc said to quit. I have to admit that the craving isn't as bad as when I tried quitting after smoking store-bought cigarettes. No telling what they put in those things.

My neighbor is a Marlboro Menthol fan, and when she first started making her own, she used menthol tobacco...she found that the taste was way too harsh and strong for her. Now she uses Vengeur tobacco from D & R, and Premier mentholated tubes, and that combination is just right for her. I tried them, and I agree. Perhaps the combination of mentholated tubes and menthol tobacco is too strong for you?

Hello. I'm new to this stuffing my own tobacco, and was wondering if you found the right combination that resembles misty menthol 120's or virginia slims? I would appreciate any advice.

D&R's [Menthol] Tobacco
Posted by Dennis on Tuesday, 20-Sep-2005

Hi I wanted to update everyone about my G.P.C. menthol light dilemma. I have tried various forms of D&R's tobacco, and was pleasantly surprised! As I preferred the menthol light type, I found that D&R's Wingate Gold to be a milder blend than the Wingate light! I also discovered that this is a very very pleasing smoke. D&R's tobacco are known to be very moist, so be carefull when stuffing, either dry somewhat (I use a microwave oven at 10% for about 1 min), or stuff lightly, as the tobacco will swell and make a very hard drawing smoke. So far Wingate Gold Has My Vote

G.P.C. Menthol Lights 100's
Posted by Dennis on Friday, 26-Aug-2005

Hi can anybody steer me towards a tobacco, or a tobacco blend that equals the taste and flavor of this cigarette?
My wife also smokes the G.P.C. ultra light 100's. We are finding a lot of tobacco that bites, or is real strong, we are trying ultra light tobaccos, but they are still strong.
HELP!!!!!!!

Honestly, I don't think youll find such low a quality of tobacco in RYO form as GPCs. I think GPC are like third cut, class b smokes, which is mostly the stuff thats left over after they make like marlboros (just what I've heard, I can't provide any solid facts). You could try top or bugler in an ultra light tube, or if you just want something thats light and yummy try D&R Windsail Platinum.

Actually there is lower quality! We have tried Farmers Gold, Southern Cross, Iceberg (fruity flavor), Kentucky Smooth and Top.We have just received Some D&R samplers, We got Penhooker light, Windsail light, Vengeur light, and Wingate light. I think we might find something decent from this fine company. To date this tobacco is super!!!

Sorry I can't help on the menthol but the spouse use to smoke GPC ultra lights. I've been stuffing Premier light tubes with D&R's Penhooker light and she has no complaints. Now you can get a bite with any tobacco if it's stuffed too loose.

What brand's have you tried so far? Tubes and tobacco?

Without more information, the only advice I can offer is that, as Kev says, you may be stuffing too little tobacco into the tubes, causing the taste of paper to overpower the taste of tobacco. Or, the tobacco you have been trying, so far, may be too dry. The more moist a tobacco is the more smooth it will be.

You might steer away from ultra light tobacco and try other types in a light tube, to see if you can't find something satisfactory. I have a feeling that ultra light tobacco doesn't sell as rapidly and may sit and dry out.
