Lil' Brown Smoke Shack (LB, LBSS)
They have a pretty good selection of brand name tobaccos at prices that are hard to beat. Their tube selection and prices aren't bad either. Shipping is 8-$10 (depends on order total). If I order before their UPS pickup I get my order the next day (UPS ground, same state). They shipped a wrong item once (out of 10 orders) and UPS picked up the return and delivered the correct replacement item the next business day. I switched to Tobacco General when they could no longer ship tobacco to my state.

Have ordered three times from this place. Out of the three orders I have had one slight mixup on some tubes. A mixup which I can easily understand what happened. I had ordered one unit of five boxes of tubes & only got one box of tubes.
[ reply | link ] to this. Go to [ topic | top ]
I called them & spoke to a very plesant lady. As she was reading my order off to me she came to the tubes & told me the problem before I told her. Take it this might not have been the first time this has happened?
The problem was quickly taken care of ( same day ) & the rest of my tubes were on there way to me no questions asked. Such a well handeled response kind of spooked me. But all is well.
The tobacco is fresh, no tube problems & has always shipped the same day to Ohio.
This one mistake will not stop me from buying from this place. In fact the way they handeled the one problem makes me want to buy from them even more. Always use my credit w/ no problems & all items are in perfect condition.

I couldn't wait to order again. I just had to get the Top-O-Matic and try some other tubes etc. I love the Top-O-Matic by the way. My hand injectors work fine but the Top-O-Matic consistently makes a better stick.

The order was complicated, I ordered several items, 1 of this and that, and I received everything I was charged for / ordered, with the exception of a couple ashtrays. I was not charged for the ashtrays so assume they are either out of stock or discontinued.
They shipped the same day and it took UPS 7 days to reach Florida from Washington State. Which is excellent.
Everything is in perfect condition and once again I am very pleased.
If you haven't tried Lil' Brown lately you owe it to yourself to give them a try.
With all the supplies I currently have it will be a few months now, but my next order will be from Lil' Brown.

I just received my first order from LBSS and am very pleased. I just had to open up everything and give it a try (I ordered 3 different brands and have already picked my favorite). It's all good stuff. Nothing is old (like it is at the local store) and they have a lot more choices than locally. I suspect they have quite a bit of volume. To me that says they have a lot of loyal customers. My next order will be with LBSS. I'm already starting a list but it'll be a couple of months before I need to order. They shipped out the same day as I ordered and the outer box is in perfect condition as is the contents. It's a couple days after Christmas and it took ten days (not week days) to receive my order, all the way from Yakima to Florida so that's pretty fast shipping, especially considering the holidays. I only mention that so others will know to allow time for shipping, it's not a complaint. If not purchased locally, you have to allow for shipping times no matter who from or what you order. Like I said before I'm very pleased with LBSS.

I know why they charged it, my issue is that this charge was not shown at checkout, nor any notice that shipping charges may be higher. I should not have to read a vendors entire website to find out real shipping costs, it should be clearly shown on checkout.

There's a 'shipping' link in their main menu. While I agree that its not a great setup (I imagine most of what they ship is flat-rate ground), the first line below the total on the checkout page is:

I meant to say that D&R won't ship into Montana UPS but will via USPS. Obviously Montana law doesn't (yet) attempt to supercede federal law when it comes to what and where the USPS can ship. Undoubtedly some goons somewhere are working on a method to enact similar legislation on the federal level. Welcome to 21st century America, where health nazis and anti-smoking gangs have more rights than you or I do, simply because we're smokers.

- Lil' Brown - Missing Package Item, Odd
- Posted by Warren on Saturday, 13-Jan-2007
I got yesterday a package from LBSS, with some NAS cans and American Bison. As a Christmas gift, they included an ashtray and two pens. I also ordered 1 pound of King Mountain, but it wasn't in the package, while invoice listed it as charged. So I call in and a friendly fellow said they will package the exact charged content over there, weigh it and compare to the weight they recorded when they shipped my package.
[ reply | link ] to this. Go to [ top ]
Well, 10 minutes later he called and said the weights matched, so the KM must be inside. I recheck the package, dig out all the popcorn, even though I was sure it wasn't there, and still no KM bag. They will still credit me the missing item, but he said that from now on they will be rechecking stuff shipped to me three times.
What could have happened to the 1 lb bag? The package didn't look damaged or opened (no retaping noticed) and the popcorn included seemed to fill up all the empty space. Could some of their employees in shipping be taking stuff out and writing up the wrong weight? Or is this some little game they use to test whether customer is telling the truth? Strange, either way.

Yeah, that entirely gratuitous response did leave a bit of a dark cloud over the peviously quite friendly relation. They were certainly clumsy with their little scheme and it wouldn't hurt them to pick few tips from D&R on how to keep customers. This was some young guy, though, maybe it was just his personal ineptitude. I talked few other times to some very nice ladies there, so I'll give them a break this time. I was told of your missing product, and i wanted to apologize for the inconvenience. The young man you spoke with was indeed a new employee. What he meant to say was that was the packing lines was at fault and for the missing product and they needed to be triple checked for accuracy so we provide you with better customer service. It is not the intention of this company to imply that the customer is at fault. We do not appreciate it if a vendor does that to us so i personally apologize for my employee's inability to properly communicate with you. My parents have built this company over the past thirty-eight years with the mentality "that the customer is always right" and i share their belief.
Respectfully,

If you are willing to rehydrate the tobacco; you won't need to return it. I do it without a thought if the tobacco needs it. But, if I were you I'd complain to them about it. A small, damp sponge makes re-hydration a snap, and sometimes even better than fresh. Mike

I order mostly cans (NAS) and had no problem with moisture. Of pouches I ordered from them, yes, they tended to be dry (but I have similar experience with puches genereally and avoid them when I can). Their bulk tobacco (such as King Mountain, which BTW is a pretty good, strong smoke) is fine.

As for their shipping, I am on East Coast (Lexington, MA) and their UPS packages take about a week to get here. It may be UPS or their employees/managers, politicking and piling up on smokers, like everyone else, and putting tobacco related parcels on a "slow track". UPS shipped tobacco packages also tend to have physical damage, crushed or gouged boxes etc. I think LBS should allow US Postal Service parcels option for customers for whom UPS takes too long or damages packages.
They should also disguise packages (and sender's name on the label) to look like something else, not tobacco, so that every anti-smoking jerk along the way doesn't get a chance to kick, stomp and gouge the box.
Otherwise I find LBS very good, not just their pricing but their customer service as well, which is staffed by polite, friendly ladies. For example, on order errors, even when I make a mistake, such as ordering a wrong item, I had no problem returning it and getting refund.

I previously used RYO tobacco http://www.ryocigarette.com/ as my primary, since I thought they had really good prices compared to others like Ziggymart and Custom Blend. But LilBrown is another step better.
Also, you get little or no e-mail support from RYO, a problem is yours to solve there. (Possibly due to language, I don't think RYO does English well for some reason) Though they ship quickly, and usually without problems, they seem unable to respond to e-mails reporting complaints. The 3-4 times over a a couple of years that I got smashed tubes, or poor quality tobacco, I could get no satisfaction through my e-mails. And I am not a nasty e-mailer, I try to use a conciliatory tone.
Lil Brown (And many others ESPECIALLY D&R) respond quickly to complaints and ship replacements (or more) very promptly.
I just wish they carried all the "brand name" pre-packaged tobaccos I use. ESPECIALLY the new Three Castles which I think is a rip-off at the price I've found it at.
( $3.95 for a 25 oz package.-- $71.50 a pound ?!? Does it cure cancer? )- Re: Is www.lilbrown.com a legit site

Buyer Beware there are 2 RYO dealers out there. One is www.ryotobacco.com and the other is www.ryocigarette.com
I have never had any experience with RYO Cigarette, so I cant comment on them, but from what I have read there not consistent in their practices.
On the other hand I have dealt with RYO Tobacco, and they are one of my preferred dealers. Along with D&R I think they both sell premium tobacco. Also their customer relations are second to none.
Please when posting make sure that you are not slamming the wrong RYO company

I have had total satisfaction during the year or so that I have been buying my Mynheer 1/2 Zware from them. Prices seem to be unbeatable and a $200+ order gets a $7 discount on shipping. They are as good and solid as D&R. I extol their virtues now and have done so in the past.

LBSS is a great and very friendly retailer. No lower price on the web for my Mynheer and a $7 discount on orders over $200. They sold me a bit over $400 worth of tobacco thus far this year and threw in a Zippo lighter in two of the three shipments. I haven't checked their prices on other brands of tobacco but I suggest that you take a look at LBSS before you order your brand. You might just find a bargain.

- Posted by Bill on Saturday, 02-Oct-2004
I just saw the sales on lil' brown & IF your a McClintock fan check it out, All 6 Oz. cans are $6.90 & the 13 Oz. can is $10.70; always a good time to stock up on your favorites when the price is lowest & as we say up here in the north woods "squirrel some away!" I've also found lil' brown to be a good place for my cigars. I have so many boxes of tubes from RYOcig's good prices I'am ready for the winter here in Packerland.

I just noticed on Lil Brown's website the following while looking at escort tube prices; a quote.

NOTICE!! ALL CIGARETTE TUBES QUALIFY FOR ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES IF MORE THAN 5 BOXES ARE PURCHASED!!
- Re: Lil' Brown Smoke Shack

Seems everyone has changed their shipping charges. RYOCigarette increased theirs but they don't have the weight or volume limits that incur additional charges. My last order was from RYO and since they don't have the limitations, I ordered a split case of Premier tubes which are also slightly cheaper at RYO. Of course I needed some baccy which was slightly higher than Lil Brown.

For my supplies it seems RYO is cheaper on tubes plus you don't get stuck with a size/volume charges. They also carry some tobacco I can't find anywhere else. Lil Brown is cheaper on my base tobacco blends so they'll probably continue to get that business. Of course buying in large quantities helps minimize the shipping costs when you calculate your true cost per carton.
On a side note - due to buying in volume, trying some new items and including a few the spouse likes...how much inventory would qualify my private stock as a business?- Re: Lil' Brown Smoke Shack

My guess is that Lil' Brown, as a reservation smoke shop, makes their money on the tobacco (no taxes). Its a bad/stupid move on their part to pull this kind of BS. Its not like they have great tube prices or that tubes add much to the cost of shipping. The old site design was more user friendly than the new as well. Two steps back for Lil' Brown.

RYO Cigarette, with Silver Tip tubes at $1.59 a box, will be getting my tube business.

I normaly only order 4 boxes of tubes at a time. So the added shipping cost isn't an issue for me. Asside from issues with the new site design, I have no major complaints about them.

Best prices I've found. Nobody beats their $6 shipping. For bulk cigarette tobacco, I actually like Peoples Pride better than H&R. The new Premier 100mm light tubes are great. Somewhat disappointed with the shipping but it might have been due to the holiday rush. I placed the order on 12/21 (Sunday) and it didn't ship until the evening of 12/23 (2 business days). The order didn't arrive until 01/02 since UPS considers this 4 days of shipping. 2 weeks to get the order to Texas.

Fourth order from Lil Brown. The UPS shipping is seeming to get faster. Placed a order on monday and it arrived friday. I live in east Texas so that seems about right to me.

I've ordered a few times since my original post. 3-4 business days to Texas. My original order was just after Xmas so I'll blame the holidays for the delay.

They've discontinued carrying Peoples Pride which has grown to be my favorite. I'm on my last pound so I guess I'll be buying direct from Peoples Pride. I'll have the first comment on them as a retailer before month-end.

After my second order, I am very satisfied with Lil Brown. Both were shipped promptly, customer service was great(not due to any problems), prices are great. I will buy from them again.

Best prices I've found on the net & the Peter Stockkebye Premium "export" line (Amsterdam; Danish; Norwegian; Stokholm & Turkish export) are also the lowest price I've EVER seen. Its a little tricky getting around the site in that some items take a little more searching but well worth the price, If there were not the couple blends I enjoy & order from D&R
