Windsail
A full flavor tube with white tipping paper. I believe current stock is still made by CTC (will be St Vincent).
Dec '07: St Vincent made Windsail Elite (LT) tubes, white tip with blue and silver stripes, 20mm HD filter, are available from D&R.

Windsail Elite is a nice looking tube. it has a blue and silver stripe around the white tip of the tube. It is just like the Rampack Elite tube. A 20mm High Density filter. The only difference is the white tip filter paper.

I use Windsail tubes a lot and I like them because they slide on the cigarette machine so easily.

I can't believe how some of the other brands of tubes are too small to slide on easily. I like Mascotte, but have trouble getting them on the cig machine, the ends squnch up. I even tried a small Mascotte hand held cig machine and they did not go one any better on their own brand of machine.
I have found that most boxes of tubes lose any odor if you open the box for at least a couple of hours.- Re: Windsail

I came bearing a gift regarding tubes that don't fit
there is no reason for this to ever be a problem for any member of Dave Lers forum, ever again, forevermore- Re: Windsail

Thank you for the gift, Mike.

What am I doing wrong? I can't find your gift regarding tubes that don't fit. Where is it located? I can't find it with search and can't seem to stumble on to it.
I am still happily using Windsail tubes, eight months later. A couple of times the filter has pushed out of the top of the cigarette, but that is over a two year period, but have had no problems other than that.

What follows concerns the box I just received, which is printed in English and French, and says "made in the U.S. for D&R Tobacco." That doesn't clue me as to whether it's the StV run or the old CTC. Maybe y'all will know. Moving on:

I want to say at the outset that I love these tubes for packing a big, long smoke. With the tobacco combos I like best, and my little Gizeh Golden Tip Productor hand-held, I made six sticks that smoked up to 29 minutes -- on my FIRST EVENING with this technology EVER.
That said, these things are poorly made. I'll bet Mark Ryan will not settle for the situation as it is now.
So far, 40% of the tubes in the first-ever box I received are dented hard by the (single seam :-() paper-application process, meaning:
(a) they won't stuff without a struggle, or at all
(b) the VERY SOFT filters loosen easily from the paper. With no effort at all (I'm 5'9" but willowy) I can twist the filter right out of the tube. By accident, even.
Also, the paper is strongly chlorine-scented. Yuck, guy. We don't need more neurotoxins in our smokes.
Please, PLEASE see to the mfg dealio on this tube. It's the only white-tipped FF one I've seen anywhere, and that is, believe it or not, going to be a big selling point when more women get into this market, which THEY WILL.
I have to repeat that the paper thinness, the sizing and color are absolutely GREAT. Hope we see Windsail taking flight with better manufacture!!
:-)

Anyone know how to get in touch with St Vincent about these tubes?- Re: Windsail ~ everything's great except...

What you describe sounds like CTC made tubes, not St Vincent. I'd talk to D&R.

Hi Dave ~

A couple weeks ago, I chatted with Amanda about this issue -- she took a note to Mark, and I think he and I missed catching each other on the phone.
Today, when I called to place another order, I followed up on the tube questions. There was some general mystification expressed over the chlorine smell but nothing else trickled down the grapevine -- at least that's the sense I got from the lady I spoke with (didn't get her name).
I never thought to ask which company made them, but I will next time. They *could* be wonderful, and I hope my naggling will help make that happen. lol.
By the way Dave -- a belated HUGE thank-you to you for this forum. It's the best. I never would have gotten settled into the MYO world if it weren't for this board, and you.
thanks again!- Re: Windsail

The case of tubes I received a week ago were quite different.
They've been resized. Now, they're much narrower than before, so they fit (barely) on my Top-O and stuff much like any other tube. Smoke time reduced to 20 minutes max, as far as I've been able to time them, and a good thing is that the chlorine taste/smell is gone. :)- Re: Windsail tubes - fast-burn paper

I didn't notice it at first, but the paper definitely burns faster than the pre-October runs of this product. That, more than the size reduction, is why they smoke only half as long if that. 12 minutes at the outside, using a heavy Turkish blend.
In addition, the tighter diameter for the paper section of the tube doesn't extend to the filter, so there's a slightly worse fit and a bit of random smoke leakage all the time -- as if it's smoking itself at both ends.
So, and rather sadly, I'm in the market for other tubes again.

D&R messed up a few months ago and sent me a box of Escorts instead of Windsail. I wrote them about it and they promptly sent me FIVE boxes of windsail tubes, and a classy leather cigarette case. I was very excited about all the free tubes, that is, until I tried them. I've seen Premiers in boxes with glue that have offset seams instead of the old crappy ones. The ones with glue are a little bit better. Well these Windsail tubes had a little piece of tape holding the box closed, and man these tubes are awful. The filter gets squishy very early on in the smoke, it seperates from the paper nearly every time, and it doesnt seem to matter what kind of tobacco I put in them, they make everything taste like garbage. They are also a lot wider than any other tube I've used. Maybe there is a new production of Windsail out that has offset seams, but I won't be buying these tubes ever again. It's a shame, too. They look pretty cool.

Hopefully Windsail tubes will improve since St. Vincent will be picking up production. Like you said, the filter element is really loose; so loose that the term full flavor is taken to the extreme. I think it would be better to just handroll a smoke (which I do often, & is the only method that a single seem doesn't irk me). I'll be willing to buy them again, but only after St. Vincent has had some time with them.

Well I'm just glad I'm not the only one to find these tubes absolute garbage, especially after the way RYO Magazine raved about them (as they do about every product they review).
