Rave packaged cigarettes are made by US Flue Cured, but the Rave MYO is actually made by Lignum-2 in North Carolina. Just to clear up any confusion.

It's distributed by Lignum-2, manufactured by U.S. Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers [link]

Lignum-2 importing Rave may predate their loose tobacco offering - which is made in the US with domestically grown tobacco. Where/how did you make a connection between between Lignum and US Flue Cured?

Where did I say anything about importing? I got the info from State MSA Lists. Most states list Rave -RYO under Lignum-2, who don't manufacture anything as far as I can tell. However, Maryland and Pennsylvania list Rave as Manufactured by U.S. Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers, (along with 1839 & Kentucy Select) with the cigarette brands they also manufacture (Distributed by Premier Manuf. Inc) [link]
It seems likely, since the Lignum2 website is all about [imported] Troya Cigars, also strangely enough Rave cigarettes appear to be imported from China, and Sampoerna is imported from Malaysia.

It makes sense enough to justify updating the topic, thanks. When I originally wrote the topic I had the impression that Rave might be imported. Today I could only find references to the cigarettes becoming US made around 2005, nothing about the tobacco ever being imported (or of Lignum going back to importing the cigarettes).

I sure didn't plan to get a Pound of tobacco yesterday from the tobacco shop; I just went for tubes! Looking around for something I haven't tried yet, I came upon Rave in FF, Menthol and Light in one Lb. bags for $15.19. The first thing I noticed after grabbing a bag of the Full Flavor was the heavy duty bag itself. The graphics are well placed as to not obstruct seeing what was inside from front, back and bottom. There was no shake to be seen. The tobacco is cut similar to McClintock FF with some blond visible here and there. I noticed on top the bag says "Made in the U.S.A.", and "All Natural Tobacco" under that. I kinda know the guy behind the counter, and have been giving him some sticks of Ramback Balkan in hopes of getting them to order some for me. I asked him if anyone has said anything about this Rave, and he told me no--one has complained about it yet.
Opening the bag revealed a very slight scent of Licorice and tobacco. The Relative Humidity was 66%, and it is a mild smoke. My thoughts are that it is a blend of dark and blond Virginia. The RH in the room is 50%, and the tobacco dried out fast that was left on the Topomatic while I sampled my first stick. There can't be any casings if it dries out that quick, can there?
The second smoke was only slightly at odds with my throat having dried enough to produce a little powder! This is a very sensitive and unique tobacco to be sure!
Next, I took a pinch and put in on a white plate, and hydrated a small container full up to 71% RH; then let it settle out to 70%. I smoked a stick of this, and it was smooth as silk with no change in scent--still slight licorice and vague tobacco! This is the first tobacco product I've seen from California, with a TP-CA-15005 sticker on the bag. Doing the spring test on the pinch after 20 minutes produced some shake, while the rest slowly came back to shape. One element looses moisture faster than the other(s)? I examined some of this tobacco with an 8 power Lupe, and only noticed what looked like a lengthwise split vein light tan in color, and nothing that shouldn't be there; to my knowledge.
All in all I'd have to say it has my approval--for now. While it smokes mild I think I'll do some blending experiments with it to find out how versatile it is; mabe add some Five Brothers Smoking Tobacco!
This is yet another tobacco blend that heightens the Southern Welcome I get when I fire up a stick of Ramback Balkan or TwoTimer next!      Captn Mike

Re: Rave Follow--Up

This tobacco has been an experience. I have never before seen a tobacco where one element of the blend held its moisture well, and another part of the blend couldn't hold moisture at all? It had a RH of 65% and I did the pinch test and observed the light colored part of this blend turn to shake. Fifteen minutes out of the bag the darker part still held up to the pinch test, and the lighter part was already gone. What could the lighter part of Rave be? Further, Blends of this cut hold their moisture well; compared to thicker cuts like Bugler and Midnight Special.

Having learned that producers of tobacco by-products use humectants and flavorings-toppings to sauce up their sinister creations is disquieting to me. Having never seen a tobacco with properties like Rave is quite the mistery to me! I have been smoking RYO and MMO since the late 1980's and as I said have not seen a tobacco like this before? And, paying $15 for a whole Pound sends up the red flags too. I'd appreciate any thought you might have to help me decide one way or the other on Rave! The fact that I ended up with a little under two cups of powdery shake dispite my efforts to keep this tobacco at 65% RH has me leaning away from buying any more. I've always been a believer of the old adage"you get what you pay for" and "if it's too good to be true--it probably isn't"? Capt Mike

I smoked Rave Menthol and Rave Light. Both smelled chemically straight out the bag like a manufactured cigarette but much stronger.

Both tasted like soil to me where as Three Castles tasted like toasted wheat or something. It tasted less dirty than Gamblers Club to me. The zip lock seal is good. If I was a farmer or something I might like it.

Bought a bag of Rave three weeks ago, very strong aroma of apples, slightly unpleasant taste and aftertaste, let it sit 3 weeks in semi-tight container, the apple smell has gone, just a nice tobacco smell now, I think it's a very decent smoke now, mellow without any unpleasant taste or aftertaste, reminds me of a Lucky.

I'm glad you like this stuff Scott. The more I smoke it, the more I like it. I smoke it almost exclusively these days. The aroma is great. I do believe you are right. That is a sweet cocoa aroma.

I just got some of this in an order from Lil Brown. Regular, light and menthol. Nice aroma. Maybe my taste buds are dead but when you can buy tobacco this good for $11.00 a pound I don't know how thay can sell anything else.

This is a nice tobacco. I bought both the ultralight and menthol light. I really like them both alot. I think it comes down to my own tastes veering towards sweetness. For a nice treat, blend half of the ultralight with half of the menthol light, or even as little as a quarter of the menthol light to 3/4 of the ultralight. I am a SYO newbie but I can tell you right now my choice of daily ultralight smoke is going to come down to either Rave or Stokers #2.

Rave Light
Posted by Ralph on Wednesday, 17-May-2006

Rave Light is pretty nice stuff. It's real cheap, fairly clean and and it stuffs nicely. It has a real nice smell and smokes real good. No bite.

I was a tried and true Stokers Light 2 man. They stopped selling it here. I tried every cheap brand known to man. They sell a lot Kentucky Smooth and Kentucky horse manure and I don't know how people smoke that stuff. It smells like manure and smokes like blue grass. I've been smoking a lot of Gamblers Light but that stuff is pretty strong and it can gum up the old stuffer. I'll be switching to Rave Light. America's Choice (?) is a pretty good cheap brand as well.

My wife and I are heavy smokers so I'm el cheapo. I'd just a soon smoke Bali Shag and McClintock all the time but I can't pay the price. Gotta love this Bush economy.

I don't know where I got America's Choice. I was at the tobacco shop the other day and it's Single Stick that I was thinking of. It was their American logo on the bag that made me think their name was American something or another. It's decent stuff for the price.
