Old Hillside
Decent inexpensive tobacco made by Stoker's. Its similar to the popular Stoker's #2 but I prefer the smell/taste of this. Medium/coarse cut, short strand tobacco, Stoker's calls it shredded. Moisture content is good to a tad high. Only available in 6oz bags. Low ~ $12 per lb.

Very poor. One of my first RYO tries a few year's back. Was full of stems, taste is just really bad ... Old Hillside is cheap for a good reason.

Tried Old Hillside Light because of the aroma that penetrated the packaging. Man,, WHAT A MISTAKE.This stuff is like smoking an old rag full of HS. It is too overwhelming for me. Tried to mix it with Stokers #2 ultra light but that didn't work either. I ended up spreading the rest of the bag into my potting soil, The flowers loved it.

Sometimes when you have nothing nice to say about someone or something you shouldn't say anything at all. But I see this as a service to my fellow hand-crafters of cigarettes... this stuff is called "Old Hillside" for a reason. That's where they found it, growing wild in a pile of wrecked cars and old tires.

You can't mix it either, its like putting 10W/30W into your Grandmammy's best cake mix. Its not harsh, I just found it to be bitter with a resonating blandness that was only amplified with each puff until my whole mouth was able to absorb all taste and flavor and the entire world looked much like the packaging, dull shades of black and white, sleepy, and old. Sorry, not a winner for me. I know they are trying to hit a value market but as car-buyers found with the Yugo: four tires, seats, and a wheel a car does not make. To smokers I would say: brown vegatative matter and smoke, a tobacco does not make.

H&R has replaced Old Hillside as one of my favorite tobaccos. H&R has a similar smell and a similar, yet more complex, taste.

I had said Stoker's shredded cut is an ideal SYO cut. I still think its one of the easiest/most forgiving SYO cuts. There is, however, something to be said for using tobacco's with similar cuts. I've been trying out a number of fine-cut shags and I find myself having to change gears a bit when stuffing Old Hillside. H&R's finer cut is closer to the norm.- Re: Old Hillside
