Classic Canadian

A inexpensive yet surprisingly decent blend of Canadian and Virginia tobaccos. Its a clean, shaggy medium/fine cut, tobacco that's mild in taste. ~$13lb.

I like the taste of this, but the shake content is unbearable at close to 50%. Anybody tried any of the alternatives? Feedback?

Thanks -

After smoking mostly Peter Stokkebye blends for a couple of years I revisited and tried a number of inexpensive (< $15LB) brands (yucky Black Jack, King Mountain and Fresh Choice). While I prefer the wider cut, shake free, milder and cleaner tasting Canoe English Blend, I did reorder a bag of the Classic Canadian (VS 2 of the CEB). The CC is a short fine-cut and its easy to use too much. While it does have a relatively high amount of shake, its not extreme and most of the tobacco is stuffable if you use a light touch. Repacking it in a rigid container will help to prevent the creation of even more shake.

...I did try to get some Penhooker (recommended years ago, below), but got sent something else (from RYOC, don't remember what). The Penhooker is $5+ more a pound, but could end up a better deal if you're tossing a lot of the Classic Canadian. Canadian Natural (Ziggymart) is another possibility... as is the Sagamore Canadian (RYOT).

I have started putting my 14 oz packages of tobacco in empty large Folger's Coffee containers. If I store them, I put a saran wrap across the top, before putting on the lid, to help seal the container. It helps to mark them or add a sticky note or add the empty package in so you will know what tobacco is in each of them. It does give the tobacco more protection against breaking into shake and it is easier and not as messy to get the tobacco out of them. You can turn it around so the Folger's label doesn't show and it looks neater than the bags.

If ithe tobacco is dry, I add distilled water to a 'button' and drop it in the top of the tobacco. Tobacco doesn't break into shake as much, if it isn't dry. If you haven't purchased the 'button' you can pour distilled water on a paper towel, squeeze out the excess water and use an open baggie to separate it from the tobacco. Tobacco will mold if you use tap water.

I have used a sifter to sift out the shake in some tobaccos. You need to put a plastic bowl on top of the sifter so you can bounce the tobacco around. If not, it makes an awful mess.

I also learned not to set any tobacco order on a dryer, water heater, near a heat vent or any type of heat. Even though they are packaged, it dries them out.

If you microwave the damp paper towel, you can help protect it from mold. At least thats what I do, and have never had any problems. Airborne germs can also escape from an open bag if they are present to begin with. Some may scoff at this, but it works and is a much faster way, but care must be taken not to hydrate too quickly. Breath also works very well on small batches, I think I read that here too, and youd be hard pressed to over hydrate that way. I ve been meaning to try the Classic Canadian too, gets good reviews and its cheap! :)

Y'all must have had a better source than I did. I managed to find some bags that looked like they were full from top to bottom and those had less shake. The ones that had everything sagging into the lower half of the bag were awful. I'd say they were MORE than half shake. Didn't even have a chance to save it, it was already busted up. Still, the shake content in the good bags was higher than I've seen with any other tobacco.

I'll have to try some of the web order stuff. The selection in Seattle is the pits. Fife had a better selection and price. Here in Seattle I'll pay 9 bucks for a small King Mountain. In Fife it was 12 for a pound (not that I'm that crazy about King Mountain; it's just difficult finding any good bag tobac around here). Ah, well. Back to the web.

Well my first impressions of it is that it is a alright blend that is very americanized and has a very original flavor that isn't to bad

To add on to what i said earlier is that it has a very strong flavor leaves a syrupy taste in my mouth but mixed it is very good

I have been smoking Classic Canadian for about three months now. I truly like the flavor, but I am having problems with to much shake in the bags. The shake makes it nearly impossible to stuff.

I just got another bag of this (4 months after my first) and the cut does seem to have changed. I'd describe the contents of this bag as a fine short cut with an above average amount of shake. A cut like this is not very forgiving. Stuffing it requires a light touch, very little tamping/packing into the slot.

I'll bet you'll love D&R's Penhooker and/or Penhooker light--RYO has the sagamore Canadian but has that old burley added that takes away from that "Canadian taste". At last we ryo/myo folks have a even larger choice of tobaccos that seems to be growing larger & larger. ENJOY

I never heard of Classic Canadian. I keep a bag of D&R's Penhooker Full Flavor (An all Virginia Canadian Blend) on hand. It's one of the best bright leaf All Virginia blends Iv'e ever smoked. Almost no shake in a 14 oz ziploc style Bag. It's a good idea to move it to a "Lock N Lock" (air tight) container or something like that soon after opening, the cut is kind of course and wide, a bit of a ribbon cut I think, drys out fast.
