Zen

RYO Mag: It reminds me of Farmers Gold and some of the other low-cost tobaccos [1] [both are M&R Holdings products] "Gold Series"...This new series is a significant improvement...appears to be less burley in this blend and far more prime leaf...a large bulky cut that work well in injectors [2] Very limited online availability, none with "Gold Series", ~$26LB

Zen Cherry
Posted by Mike on Wednesday, 07-Mar-2007

I just decided to start SYO instead of buying packs and paying all the taxes that go to telling me how evil I am for smoking. </rant>
I got this and a pouch of American Spirit with a Supermatic. It's a really good smoke, if you like flavored smokes. It's very smooth compared to the Camel Turkish Silver I usually smoke and isn't as "heavy" as the flavored camels. Leaves a nice flavor after smoking. My wife hates the smell so I'll probably only get it occasionally. One major problem, the last 1/8 of the bag was shake by the time I had stuffed it into some Zen tubes (first day and first try so I can definitely improve.)

Hi Mike, if you are new to this and like flavored tobaccos Lil Browns smoke shack carries the flavored blends by Canoe, I like them a little better than Zen but of course that's just me. Then there's always the Top flavors that you can buy in the pouch from almost any grocery store. If you pick up a little 79mm hand roller for about $1.50 you can use the Juicy Jays flavored papers to add a little more flavor to the tobacco. What kind of American Spirit did you get and how do you like it?

Smokin n Jokin, I’ve been thinking of buying some Canoe, and Zen flavored tobacco. How strong are the flavors?

They aren't overwhelming. I bought Zen vanilla, blueberry, strawberry and cherry because I can buy them locally by the ounce. Then I found the Canoe and ordered the Peach and Orange. I just think that Canoe starts out with a little better product than Zen does. I don't smoke them very often, every two or three days I'll roll one. If I smoked one of every kind of tobacco I like I'd be smoking about four or five packs a day. I have Top and Zen strawberry, I'll compare them and get back to you but I think the Top is going to have a little more flavor. I'm thinking about blending in a little of some kind of vanilla with my daily smoke.

Re: Zen CherryI got the regular light blue pouch, natural I guess. It's ok, kinda harsh. I picked up a pack of Bali Shag last night and an experimenting with a blend of the two. I also ordered some samples from Thrust so I'll do some experimenting there and may try D&R samples too.
I tend to go ape sh*t when I find a new "hobby" so I'm trying to make sure I don't waste a bunch of money trying to save money, ya know what I mean.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying to figure out my Simplimatic, tried a couple of adjustments last night, hopefully I didn't loosen/tighten the wrong things.

I know what you mean lol. I used to spend about $250.00 a month on cigarettes so I started stuffing my own to save money. Now I only spend about $600.00 a month on tobacco, accessories, tubes and papers. American Thrusts sample program is an excellent way to find out what you have a taste for. I have a fondness for golden virginias but they are a little to mellow and smooth so I try to add some growl to them by blending with a good halfzware.

"...so I try to add some growl to them by blending with a good halfzware."

"Growl" is what I'll think of from here out when thinking about that certain quality of taste/strength. Good description.

...kinda like a "Wolf" bottle of bourbon.

ZEN peach flavored
Posted by mike on Tuesday, 20-Sep-2005

This is a delicious tobacco, if you like peach. It has the typical ZEN shortcomings (like most of it instantly crumbling to shake), but the flavor is great. Would be best to cut this with an unflavored tobacco so the peach doesn't become overwhelming. As far as the aroma goes, it smells somewhat cigar-like. Decent stuff, sort of without any comparison, being the only peach cigarette tobacco I've ever seen!

Mad Dog 20/20 has a peach flavor called Peaches & Cream. Think I'll stick with Red Grape.

Zen is my all time fave RYO/SYO smoke. I normaly smoke the Zen light. Somtimes I also like to throw some zen vanilla into the mix. One thing to keep in mind. I was told many people who try zen don't like it. That is due to it sitting on the shelf at the smoke shop and getting stale. The shop I buy from orders zen weekly. So the stuff I smoke isn't stale. I highly recomend zen.

The packaging looks trendy enough... This is a pretty strong recommendation, though, so I guess I'll give it a shot.

I origionaly started smoking zen because it was the cheapest they had at the smoke shop. I am not that picky a smoker, but now that I have been trying other tobaccos I don't like zen as much as I used to. I like the stokers #2 much better now. Given that I was smoking zen and occasionaly top, I didn't realy have much to compair the zen to. Zen isn't a bad smoke at all, but I have found others I like more. I think I would still use the zen vanilla for blending though. I guess when it comes right down to it. I was a tad overly excited about zen and gave it better reviews that maby I should have.

I just tried the Zen "cognac" blend. It was very good, not harsh or bitter. The taste was smooth with a hint of the cognac. A big plus for flavored tobacco. I also smoked it with the old Premier Supermatic Signature light tube. A very poorly constructed tube. I've heard CTC has upgraded this tube. I bought the tube at a smoke shop. It most likely was old stock. The Zen was still excellent.
