- Strong Tobacco's to Try?
- Posted by Evan on Thursday, 13-Apr-2006
Hi Everyone,
As some of you know, I'm new to the MYO thing. I started with Gambler. I just tried some Bali Halfzware. Wow, now that's a cigarette. Very Strong with flavor. I like it a lot. I'm already getting spoiled, here's me***Smiling*** I'd like your help. I'd like to get together some different tobacco's to try of different types to see what I like. I do like the strong. Can you all help me put together a list of say, 5 or 6? Thanks Everyone!

I'm not big on 'strong' tobacco's per se. I smoke McClintock Virgina which is about as strong as a Marlboro but taste wise it's in another galaxy. I've tried the Bali Red and the Bali Blue but they really didn't do much for me.

Go to the tobacco section on here and look in Peter Stokkebye. There's mention of some 'strong' tobacco's and PS makes some quality smokes. I understand the D&R makes a smoke called 'Cock Strong'. I've never tried it but it sounds like it's geared to people who like strong smokes :)
Some tobacco's that I did try that tasted good to me but were just a tad too strong for my liking are 'Lane' and another called 'Brookside'. You can probably find pouches of Lane in your local smoke store. I found the Brookside on MYO.com. The Lane was a little expensive as I recall and the Brookside was a bargain.
D&R makes two smokes called Roland and Roland Light. I've never tried the 'Roland' but the Roland Light is an excellent smoke. I don't know why they call it 'Light' because it certainly isn't a 'Light' smoke. Maybe they mean it's lighter than the Roland. It's got a chocolate smell to it but it's not a flavored smoke, it's really quite delicious and a tad on the strong side.
So there's a few to get you rolling :)- Re: Strong Tobacco's to Try?

D&R's Cockstrong is my everyday smoke. I tone it down by stuffing it in a charbon tube. The spouse smokes lights but she'll smoke a few of mine during the day so a charbon tube really helps. It is rather strong smoked in a plain premier or zigzag tube.

Most halfzwares are premium quality imports and what's 'good' is a matter of personal taste (Bali is a fine tobacco but not one of my favorites taste-wise). There's at least 10 halfzwares in the Brands section that are well worth checking out.

about Natural American Spirit tobacco (I prefer NAS regular blend in non-filtered tubes). It has 10 times more "free nicotine" than regular Camel and it is also additive free. The cans (5.9 oz = 150 grams per can) are about $11-12 which makes 140-160 king size sticks.
If you still wish a bit of extra buzz every now and then, you can prime any tobacco for few hours (or even a day) in an air-tight container with a bit of ammonia (e.g. squeeze a drop or two of ammonia onto a strip of paper towel, lightly pre-moistened with a distilled water). The tobacco will turn very dark (even if it was a light gold initially). The highly alkaline atmosphere will convert additional nicotine into the "free nicotine" form (see the link & articles above). A milder variant of the same process is to sprinkle the tobacco with a bit of baking soda and let it spend few hours in a closed container with a moistened paper towel strip. For either procedure, you let the tobacco dry before stuffing (so it can stuff well). Make sure you're safely seated before you light it up first time (there can be too much of a good thing).

Echoing other posters, my 2 favorite strong tobaccos are American Spirit US Grown Blend and Ryback by D&R.

As far as availability, try Charles Fairmorn Dark Fired Shag. It is the only full Zware tobacco that's available in the States anymore (TTBOMK). Three other good ones were Mynheer, Black Death & Gauloises, but alas, they are no longer available here.

Gauloises can still be found if you're diligent...one of the local shops seems able to get it fairly regularly for one of my friends. It is, indeed, some seriously strong smoke. And BD...whoa; the only time I've tried it so far I got a serious head-spinning buzz that reminded me of the very first time I ever inhaled tobacco.

- Hubby needs a kick...
- Posted by marlihen on Tuesday, 24-May-2005
...in the throat. Not sure if that's legal, smiles. Anyway, I went 'A.D.D.' on this SYO thing and bought about every kind of tobacco sample I could think of. Oh, and tubes, all sorts, and rolling papers, for when he heads back to Iraq (he'll be rolling, I'll be stuffing and mailing); the plan was for him to try different types and weed out the bad ones. The thing is, he likes it harsh. Weird, I think, but whatever. So "smooth" tobaccos don't doing anything for him. Any suggestions? Smiles, marli

BTW: He's tried Midnight Special (0) (on a scale of 0-10), Rowland (2), American Thrust Regular (1), Athey (6), Ryback (10), and PS Amsterdam Shag (not rated yet, but "too smooth").- Re: Hubby needs a kick...

Try out some halfzware and even some full zware. Drum, Black Death, Bull Snit, Chas. Fairmorn, Gauloises, etc.

Since I started SYO, I find the only thing I consider harsh is dry tobacco. Strong is good.
Anything that is a shag cut will probably need to be blended with a traditional cut, so that it will stuff easier.- Re: Hubby needs a kick...

And moist tobacco is generally smoother and not as strong (taste). I was trying to figure out the Ryback VS Amsterdam (both being halfzwares) and it could be moisture content. D&R is generally ideal for stuffing, slightly on the dry side. Stokebye is typically too moist out of the can. Dry the Amsterdam (or anything he considers too smooth) out a bit and see what he thinks... Arbo is the harshest halfzware I can think of.

I think you are right, I did think that the Amsterdam was more moist than any of the D&R tobaccos. I didn't have any trouble stuffing it though, and I only had the 1 ounce sample so I stuffed it all. Do you think the tobacco will dry out in the tubes? I will definately dry out any of the others that are more moist and see if that helps. Thanks for your thoughts!

Ok, here's an update: you all were right, the tobacco was too moist (AKA: smooth), and as it dries out (in the tubes) he says it is getting better. So...now I know I need to let the stuff dry a bit more before stuffing it. This MYO gets more and more intricate every day; I wonder if this man knows just how lucky he is? Smiles, marli

Thanks. I was thinking that he might like the halfzware types (I have a few of those in my sample collection, smiles), but I wasn't sure. Funny how picky that man can be, considering what he USED to smoke (Marlboro red, ugh). The Amsterdam is a shag, right? And yet I didn't have trouble stuffing it (Premier tubes and a Super2). I haven't blended anything yet, yikes! I think I'll wait on that!

Try the Mynheer 1/2 zware. 'Lil Brown Smoke Shop is a good place to buy.

I've been working on a can of this and it definitely has a kick and throat impact even in a light tube. It smokes like a Marlboro red but tastes better.

I'm also a Ryback fan. I smoke it by the pound!! Anyhow, seems I have similar taste. I also like Jester...even better than Ryback. Do you get Jester? I also like to mix in equal parts: Jester-Ryback-Sagamore Halfzware to create my own dutch blend. The sagamore is the "fill", the Jester is the flavor, and the Ryback is there for....well I don't know why I add the ryback but I do know I like it! Drum is also a special treat...but not my everyday smoke. Amsterdam Shag is also on the top of my list...when I have the patience to dry it out a little :) But for everyday smoking...it is all Jester and Ryback for me....but I always have a can of Amsterdam around waiting to go.
