While I only smoked it occasionally,I really missed Gauloises caporal that's no longer sold in the US.Recently I tried Charles Fairmorn Dark Fired Shag,to me it's so close I can't tell the difference. Not cheap and usually sold as pipe tobacco,a good source is pipesandpleasures.com

How does Windsail Platinum compare to Sagamore Virginia? I really like the SV and will probably get some of the Windsail with my next D&R order.

To me, the Sagamore Virginia is more forgiving as far as moisture content goes when it comes to flavour. Windsail Platinum seems to me to have a very narrow window when it comes to optimal flavour/moisture content. Also, the SV certainly has a touch more sweetness to it.

Lanes Golden Virginia
Posted by smokin n jokin on Friday, 12-Jan-2007

Has anyone found anything like it or found a place to buy it online. The only place I can find it is at one smoke shop here and they sell it for about $50.00 a pound. Not expensive as premades go but pretty pricey for MYO's. I've tried blending it but anything you blend it with really corrupts it.

You can get it at RYO Tobacco. It's not that great though, looks exactly like every other Lane product and tastes strongly of casings and other crap. Certainly not worth fifty bills a pound.

Need some recomendations [Three Castles and Export "A"]
Posted by B on Tuesday, 25-Oct-2005

I am converting over to MYO once again. I am looking for some tobacco and tube recommendations. I used to roll Three Castles and bought Export "A" prerolled. Can anyone recommend a tobacco that would be similar to one of these two brands? What kind of tubes are considered the best full flavor filter tube? Thanks!

This post mentions some tobaccos comparable to Three Castles. The new Platinum Windsail (higher up on that page) is probably more like the '02 stuff that D. preferred. There's also an Export A page.

July '06: Three Castles page (Export A NLA).

For tube recommendations see this thread.

Peter Stokkebye's Danish Export, and Bali Shag Red and D&R 3 Sails are very very close to The 3 Castles. I have all on hand, including The 3 Castles. And for Tubes "Mascotte" made by Gizeh and very thin and add no taste to your stick, very well made. Google "Gizeh of north America"

replacement for McClintock Virginia
Posted by V.B. on Tuesday, 20-Sep-2005

Just received the last 6 cans of McClintock Virginia stocked by my usual source (American Thrust). Any suggestions of what among available brands will come close to the taste and strength of this remarkable (IMO) and much to be missed tobacco?

V.B.

McClintock Virginia was my regular smoke until a couple of weeks ago. After reading that it was being discontinued I decided to start looking for a replacement. Ordered some of D&R's Windsail Platinum and immediately fell for it. It's not a perfect replacement flavor wise but I like it better. Smooth, clean, mellow, tasty smoke, no harshness or after taste. The moisture content and cut are very similar to McClintock to me. Definitely worth a try for anyone, especially if you are a fan of Virginia tobaccos.

D& R's Windsail light and Windsail Platinum are superior to Mclintock virginia in my mind. Try them, they are both exquisitely fine tobaccos.

Tobacco suggestins needed. [American]
Posted by Mary on Sunday, 14-Aug-2005

I started out with Gambler Full Flavor. I like the taste and it is not harsh. But I get a what I guess you call an aftertaste that just won't go away. So I tried Golden Harvest Full Flavor. It is not as strong tasting as the Gambler and I find I really only get a good cigarette taste in the second half of the smoke, but no after taste, dry mouth feeling. I am not sure if this is making sense or not.I don't know if maybe the Gambler is too moist or too dry, as I am new to SYO.Is there any tobaccos out there in the same price range that has the taste of Gamble or close to it, without the after effects?

I'm a broken record. Stoker's #2 light is the ticket. Try Gambler's light. Even Gambler's light is tarry and you can see it. I went through a bag of Gambler's regular once and that stuff is so tarry, it gums up my machine. If the light is too light for you, try McClintock. It's pretty clean and potent stuff. If you're looking for a buzz, try some of the Bali Halfzware shag. It is priced higher than the Gambler's but you can probably mix it with the Stoker's #2 light to get a taste you are looking for.

If you want some really good vanilla, try RYO Cigarette. They carry Arango Sportsman Vanilla. I've tried both and Look Out Vanilla doesn't come close. I like mixing about 1 part Arango Vanilla to 8 parts of my base tobacco.

Check out some of the light blends from D&R. They are constantly pushing the limits of blends and all their stuff is of top quality and reasonable price. I hear their PenHooker light and Windsail Light are amazing. I haven't tried them since I'm at the other end of the spectrum (full Dutch Halfzware is what I smoke). I'd recommend reading the reviews of their blends at www.ryomagazine.com

D&R's web site http://www.cigarettetobacco.com/

The best light tobacco I have found after trying way to many to list is: McClintock Virginia. I keep trying new ones but I keep coming back to McClintock... great light mild flavor and rolls very well, although in the 6 oz can, it comes very moist.... so I transfer it to my tobacco jar a day ahead and leave the lid partly open to dry it out. Rolling my own for over a year and would never go back to all the chemicals in regular cigarettes.

Not sure which chemicals you are worried about but Stokkebye adds casings and toppings to all their cigarette tobaccos. See towards the bottom of this page for description. http://www.peterstokkebye.com/cig_manuf.htm

Even in the MYO world there are very few truly additive-free tobaccos. :(
