Strange Chunk

Posted by Ebenezer on Monday, 24-Dec-2007
I have been SYO for years now and have never seen this. I have smoked all, which is a vague term that includes everything except the obviuosly nasty blends, tobacco Companies. While I do have several other brands around all the time I smoke mostly D&R at this point and have narrowed my tastes down-Two Timer Gold(TTG) and Three Sails(seperately, in Rizla Cig. Size), with a splash of Cockstrong. My current pouch TTG has smoked and tasted regularly for 1/6 of the pouch, newpouch. I dumped out half of one of my 8oz canning jars to make some smokes and there was this CHUNK. I just thought it was a clump of tobacco, but I grabbbed, or pinched, and it crumbled into dust. So I gently swept it into my hand and it is a powdery chunk of something. My first thought was it reminded me of a very dry hash-ish sort of material. I smelled it and it was heavy of chocolate/'"D&R sweetness". Is this common? Or is this experienced by others? Is this a chunk of "all-natural-topping", haha, Im curious....

Save all the chunks you can. maybe in a small Lock & lock container or something air tight. If I had some, I might even try dusting a little American Spirit or whatever to give it a little taste... lol.

I e-mailed Mark about the "Chunk", and found out what the real deal is. Here is his answer:
    dear mike,
sometimes a chunk will get past us - we still do things by hand to we usually spot them and pull. those little tobacco hash chunks come of the cutting machines from time to time in all tobacco. the fine powder accumulates on the machine and breaks off occasionally into the cut. we are not a cutting operation but i know the machines are cleaned regularly, it is just something that happens (rarely). not having seen the chunk, that would be my answer. this is ubiquitous and since we handle the tobacco directly we can usually catch it. the chunk smells like twotimer because it probably absorbed some flavoring while spraying. these things happen and can not be completely avoided. thanks for letting me know and please feel free to inform your friends.
best wishes,
mark

I would suggest you call D&R and tell them what you have found. They will most likely appreciate your sending back what ever you found to them so they can determine what it is. I'm even more sure they'd send you a replacement. I have never had a bad bag or cup of tobacco from D&R, and I too use Two Timer Gold! Mark at D&R is vary proud of his products, and even says so on every bag "100% Product Guarantee". Capt Mike

Yep, I too have seen highly flavored 'chunks' in a number batches of Ryback from D&R. Disconcerting....

I only smoke American Spirit for quite a while now. No chunks, no vagueness and no suspicion. I get more than enough undocumented pollutants from other sources.

After years of buying D&R tobacco,   I have never seen anything like that.

Yes indeed, my friend, you've likely been given the rare opportunity to take a specimen of D&R topping material to a testing lab and find out exactly what it is....

Keep us informed. ;-) And in the meantime, might I suggest a companion listening experience, "The Voice of Chunk" by the Lounge Lizards. It's strange, too, but good strange.

well you know I'll have to get round to that!!! (tune, myself) hehe Mark strikes me as pretty darn creative!!!   ....god only knows but he surely seems well trustworthy of safety, however the chunk(s) might be better left "unsolved", and if smoked definitely pulverized and blended evenly...
