RCIP sucks!
Posted by Dave T. on Sunday, 02-Sep-2007
Having noticed a change in the taste and performance of our Newport 100s in the past few months, and realizing it must be more than a few "bad" cartons, the wife and I did a Google search and found out about the RCIP (reduced cigarette ignition propensity) law many states are adopting. We are now looking into joining the RYO scene, and while researching what it will take to make our own smokes, we found this nice website. I have a couple of questions we were hoping you fine folks might be able to answer.
1. Does the RCIP laws affect the RYO supplies? I can't seem to find if it's a change in the tobacco, paper, or whatever they have done...but the results are a nasty tasting smoke that constantly goes out.
2. So if this rule only applies to manufactured cigs, great! But I guess I would ask how many of you RYO for the cost savings (which I see now can be quite a lot) or for the quality. Although I think nobody likes the price hikes of tobacco products, our reason for change is one of quality more than cost. What I am wondering is if you RYO primarily for the cost savings, quality, or ???
3. We live in a small town (300k pop) and our only tobacco shop is also a porn store, tattoo parlor, and head-shop. Are there any decent online sources for ordering, or would you suggest we travel a couple hours to a bigger city to buy our supplies "locally"?
Thanks for any answers you folks come up with.

My answers to some of your questions are,

1. I started MYO for cost now it's for quality.
2. Drive hours for supplies? Not unless you're going to some kind of Super Duper Discount Store. Save the time and gas money and order on-line. There's lots of good places on the net to get all your supplies at a good price.

From what I could find, manufactured RCIP compliant cigs have two bands on the tube to extinguish the burn. The RCIP doesn't go into effect in Illinois til Jan 1 08, so I have not seen any yet. Are you from Oregon? RCIP went into effect there on July 1. the only other state to enact RCIP recently was California on Jan 1 07. I have not found anything on RYO products and RCIP.
As to price or quality, for me it was price that got me started on RYO, quality and cost will keep me here.
I suggest reading the sections on retailers for online supplies and menthol for help in making a choice. i have only bought online from D & R, but there are fans of several other online retailers that have posted here.
The 300k population has to a typo right? I would not travel 2 hours just to get supplies, with online ordering being so convenient.

This world (America) has gone so nuts.....

just to add a little to what you did already cover
I think cost in fact is a large reason many are drawn to this alternative to pre-mades, but very fortunately for those that last, it turns to reward and quality
I would issue a slight warning: making the change one that will stick forever can be a tricky thing, and if one isn't prepared for it, it could be not unlike quitting smoking itself. I hope they do not tamper with the paper on tubes in the future....maybe we should attempt a preparation argument just in case it ever gets down to us. (the SYO ers)

I think the "bands" were one way they were trying to come up with a safer cig. Without proof beyond my experience, I can say that they must have messed with the tobacco. The taste has changed a fair bit, and the self-extinguish problem seems to be from the very first light to the end.

well for me it was mostly rebellion that brought me back to SYO, and after adjustment period, thank god.
Join us then....don't support that cr*p!!!
after you go through experimentation and get used to the difference of fresh tobacco with much less tampering, you will be so thankful.......

It is certainly possible, even probable that the Newport blend was tweaked, if the bands weren't enough to pass the burn test, they probably had to remove an accelerant or several. Still wondering what state you are in. Hope you find a MYO menthol brand you can enjoy.

Well I started a couple of years ago at the suggestion of a friend. It's not only less expensive but the smoke is better. You'll enjoy your new hobby, as long as you don't mind making the smokes. I have seen plenty of other folks start and then later go back to buying premade cigarettes. This is the website that will tell you everything about making your own smokes, as long as you want to read a ton of information. Take it slow, have patience and try, try, try different tobaccos. There is so much information here at this website about retailers, machines, tubes, tobacco, maintenance of machines,etc... You'll probably be ordering from websites and getting it shipped to your doorstep. Most of my tobacco and other supplies come from mail order. If you don't want to make credit card purchases on-line the retailers usually 1-800 numbers. And if you call D&R then you can talk to some really friendly people. It only takes a couple of days to ship and then bamm your making your own smokes. I live in an area that has several smoke shops. I don't visit them too much if at all and have made very few purchases at them. Oh, by the way, I did recently purchase a Supermatic Premier to replace my Supermatic II. I should have bought the big blue or Supermatic the first time. A smoother machine, much more solid. The supermatic II made smokes for two years and is now my back up so it still works. Hey congratulations and welcome to making your own smokes.
