Rolling Papers

I would say these are the best rolling papers out there. The papers are easy to roll, and when licked they taste great. While smoking them there is defiantly a liquorice taste, but it is not overpowering. If you keep the cigarette in your mouth you can taste the sweet flavor on your lips. The papers are pretty cheep at $.50 for a pack of 50 at LBSS. I only wish they came with cut corners.

Not wanting to commit a heresy here, but sometimes I enjoy the spontaneity of a quickly rolled smoke, especially while working on different blends or during different times of the day. Too, I prefer not to keep very large batches of cigarettes, even when in a humidor, for extended periods. With my favorite roller, a RAYO 1.25 I enjoy the convenience of on the spot rolling.

However, I have found a huge difference in flavors, the presence of non tobacco tastes, degrees of hotness when smoking, whether or not the papers hold the ash end while smoking, hand feel and eye appeal. I cannot stand to have papers that turn an ugly dark brown while smoking.
My current standard is the Job Gold 1.25 although I hate the tiny packs of only 32 papers. Tried the silver and a French light and disliked both...a LOT. Your thoughts and experiences? Any alternatives with larger packages. These tiny packs have got to be hugely marked up in price compared to what a sensibly sized pack with say 250 papers would cost. With only 32 papers running up to 2.00 each, depending where you buy them, that makes a huge dent in any savings per pack of smokes.- Re: RYO Papers

Many places have taxed the bejesus out of rolling papers in the name of that idiotic lunacy, The War On Drugs (A Quinn Martin Production). I don't think it's all the manufacturers; when I'm in the UK on business I routinely buy Rizla papers (most any size and type) for 25p to 50p according to package size, which even includes VAT.

There are certain tobaccos I enjoy more when hand-rolled (some of the Peter Stokkebye blends especially, which tend to be too moist and far too fine-cut for stuffing). That said, I'm partial to the Rizla blue King Size hand rolling papers ans Swan filter plugs. The Rizlas burn evenly and cleanly with little or no discernable flavour of their own, while the Swan filters are typically the perfect density for me and clean-tasting. I've tried the Rayo filter plugs many times and they impart a peculiar taste to the smoke that I just can't stand.- Re: RYO Papers

Thanks for the recommendation re the filters. I'll have to see if I can find a source on-line for the Swans. I agree thoroughly that sometimes with rolling there seems to be a better flavor with some blends, maybe partly because with rolling it is so easy to really control how much tobacco is used and still get a good roll.

I've never seen Swan filters here in the States, so I always buy a boatload when I'm in the UK (they're only about 60p for a box of 200) along with a few pouches of real Drum Shag and Drum Milde (both of which I also prefer to handroll instead of stuffing). The Rizla filters over there are about the same price (I've not seen them here anywhere either), and I've bought them before, but I prefer the Swans. The last few times I bought Rayo filters (from different retailers) they had a powdery feel to them and started emitting a perfume-like taste once the stick was about halfway down.

I also enjoy the occasional hand roll. I totally agree about the Rayo filters. I had the same experience with the Premier filters too. The only ones I like that I've tried are the Sharrow filters that come in 3 sizes available at RYO tobacco.

They don't have the paper around them so they stay in place and seem work better in my opinion. Also there is none of that filter-fallout dust like with the others and no strange flavors.
As for papers, I've enjoyed all of the Rizla types I've tried. Also I tried some of those Golden Wrap (cognac flavored) as kind of a novelty and I kind of enjoyed it. Not your everyday kind of thing but an interesting diversion. I'll likely try more perhaps in the other flavors too.

I’ve been rolling my own cigs for about two months now, and I can’t imagine ever going back to premades. I smoked Camel unfiltered for about three years. About two months ago my wallet was stolen, and I only had $5.00 in my pocket. I went to a gas station about a block away from my house where I know the clerk (He doesn’t check for ID, and my ID was in my wallet). The Camels were more than $5.00, so I asked for some Bali Shag I saw near the cigarettes. I couldn’t believe the taste of these, but I smoked so many that night that my throat stung when I woke up. I currently smoke about 10 cigarettes a day Half Bali Shag Red, and Half Lookout Halfzware Shag. I am curious about what rolling paper you would recommend using, as I have almost no knowledge on rolling papers.

I know some purists will disagree, but you're better off using the single-width complimentary papers that come with the tobacco. (rather than expensive papers like JOB's, Zig Zag, and hemp) The end product looks more like a real cigarette as opposed to a joint & I really don't think the paper interferes that much with the taste. Since you're used to smoking nonfilter Camels, you will be more used to the length of the single wides than king size rolling papers, and contrary to popular belief, the single wides ARE easier to hand roll than kings. As you get deeper into the hobby you may find yourself ordering from a place like D&R...try the Gizehs.- Re: Another New One

Single wides are a PITA to roll, get some 78's. And if you think that all papers are created equally youve never smoked the Top or midnight special ones.

A friend of mine gave me a pack of JOB 1.25's and I still can't roll as well with them. I guess it really depends on what you learn with.

I agree about Top & Midnight Special ( and now the new Bugler) having bad papers, but I do miss the book style Buglers and I like the book style Zig-Zags. They're probably all the same paper though and none would suit the true fanatic. I don't mind complimentary papers at all (especially if the dispenser works, unlike Bugler's new dispenser packs) and since I learned with them it's what I prefer. If I order papers, I always buy single wide Gizehs or Rizlas. It should also be said that I really don't need a king size nonfilter to satisfy my nicotine needs.- Re: Another New One

...and I think I detect a faint hint of incense from the 1.25's and the cigarette outlet/headshop they came from. Truly disgusting.

Matt...I meant to say this earlier, and this is between me and my friend, not an invitation for infighting which I don't have in me for today, nor could I argue about what I don't know......

Im don't care how shitty the free included "leaves" may be, leave it to me to make them function.....the best of the MYO/RYO "peeps" would insist on using these first if they could understand it/get mentally behind the "spiritual" concept.....this message was for Matt and the less technically serious without something to prove.......don't F*CK with this post, and maybe I'll hug you someday

I use the papers that come in the pouches. Not had any trouble with any of them except the blue-packages Rizla. They taste funny to me.

I prefer the Zen single wides that come with their pouches. all 70mm papers I believe.
Since I mostly stuff into tubes, I currently have several thousand papers left over I keep for hard times.

Just to show how peoples taste varies; I'll share a bit of info. I too, have loads of papers, two and a half boxes worth, and when I reach for a pack I look for the Blue Rizla papers, because I like the fact they impart no noticeable taste; and they seem to be neutral. Next, I'll go for the Bali Shag papers. Variety is the spice of life, and we do enjoy it now and then! Mike

hmmm, I thought the blue Rizlas tasted like brown paper bag. I do like the Bali's and one of the best is Red Smoking Papers and the Jester papers.

I have a ton of McClintock and Buglers though. Those work OK. Maybe I'll try the Rizla's again later. Maybe it was just that one paper.- Re: Another New One

Actually, the problem you had with the Rizla Blue I had with Top, and to a lessor degree Bugler papers. I guess I'll try them again. I've been using a Gizeh metal roller lately when I want an old fashioned smoke like back in the day! I don't go for those fancy papers; since I have a lifetime supply on hand.

My brother in law has a construction company in Brevard County, Florida, and he has a guy on the crew who rolls his own. This guy seems to run out of papers allot, and needs to leave the job-site to get more. I sent my B.I.L. a box of papers, over 3 pounds worth to keep in the truck for him! Mike- Re: Another New One

Mike, I tried the Rizla's again with several other tobaccos. better the second time around. Must have been operator error.

I've got a pack right now. They work great and they're pretty cool but I think it's more of a novelty thing. It doesn't taste extraordinarily different, in my opinion but the lack of smoke they put out when they burn is intriguing. I probably won't buy another pack ($5/pack and they don't say how many is in there), but I'd say I like them as much as hemp and flax papers. You all should buy them at least once, they are damn cool.

Although they are not clear, I find elements are clear enough that you won’t get hassled at concerts, airports, or any other place the authorities may want to search you. If you’re looking for something different try some Prince Albert Tobacco in some Aleda papers.
